Supernatural Institute #2

Born By Moonlight

Rate this book
Avery
The job I've dreamed of at the Supernatural Ambassador Institute awaits me...if I can stay alive long enough to claim it.

An unknown darkness is slithering through my veins, poisoning me with its deadly venom. Still, I’m determined to fight—to claw my way on shredded nails to survive.

I can see Wyatt’s desperation to help. Most likely it’s out of guilt for rejecting me as his mate. But I can't risk trusting him again. Now, more than ever, I have to be strong.

Wyatt
I refuse to let Avery die, even if her withering glances threaten to burn me to ash. I tried to fight fate, but now I'm at its mercy.

Still, I’ll do whatever it takes to protect my mate. Teeth bared, I will battle my way back to her side, even if she resists me every chance she gets.

But little does either of us know, a prophecy is in the works, and Avery is the catalyst to it all.

Will she allow me to stand at her side and face what's to come? Or will her isolated cries haunt me forever in the silvery moonlight?

As stated in book 1 review...I let a bit too much time pass between this read and my review so it will be brief.

Continues to be a flawless move in the storyline. There is a dark side that popped up at the end. Loved it and hated it (in a good way). Secondary characters are great! Always makes for a better read for me when this aspect is strong.

Excited for book 3!

Happy reading,

This felt like a filler because nothing was actually resolved. It also ended with my favorite trope of all time *sarcasm*. I hope it gets resolved quickly because I have very little patience for that trope. There have been exceptions but those are few and far between. Here's hoping the next book is better ♡

"I would die for you," I whispered to her softly before kissing her on the cheek. "And I will do anything to save you."

5 stars!

This series continues to blow my mind. I cannot express how much I am obsessed with Avery and Wyatt's story as Krista Street continues to pull me in with her easy writing, captivating characters and twisty plotlines. Throughout reading, I couldn't help but draw similarities to angsty Edward from New Moon--which is arguably my favorite Edward--and it just made me love Wyatt and Avery even more. Their chemistry and pining was so palpable, and I loved following them along while trying to figure out how to keep Avery's life force from depleting. I'm so stoked to see where the prophecy will lead Avery and Wyatt as they struggle to keep each other close♡

Tropes: fated mates, forbidden love, alpha j/p hero, special snowflake heroine, hidden prophecy, cloaked villains, rejected mate, secret pining, magical world, cliffhanger ending (part of a series)

My Wyatt, the werewolf hell-bent on protecting his mate from everything...including himself...

I hate the memory loss trope; especially when used only to drive a wedge between the MMC & FMC because I already know that’ll be the only reason for it in book 3.

3.5/5 It’s like a typical cliché story that has me cringing and frustrated but lowkey still intrigued.

“Over the past weeks, he’d pushed me away so I could pursue my dream at the Institute and not be encumbered by a long-distance relationship, but he’d intended to find me again after he upheld the commitment that kept him here at the SF.And even though he’d lied to me—which was a super shitty thing to do—I was kind of starting to understand his reasoning.”

I still think the no communication trope is stupid but I do kind of get it.
Although if that wasn’t alrdy bad enough.. they just had to end with the amnesia trope. I REALLY hate that.

Erm...I read the book quicker than I thought (oops). The book definitely had more story than the first part, which is understandable because you have to get to know the characters first. I was definitely gripped by what happened to Avery and whether there would be a solution or what would happen to her. Wyatt and Avery finally found each other again, only to be torn apart by a prophecy. I'm looking forward to reading the third book and I already know that I'm going to devour the book.

Felt super fluffed up to finally get to the punchline in the last chapter. The first and second books should’ve been edited further and combined…

The writing is too verbose, skipped major unnecessary sections. Might not finish the series.

Wow I wasn’t sure the sequel could better the first book but I was wrong, this book was a great addition to the first.

The book picks up directly after book 1 ends. We see Avery and her struggles to come to terms with, and live with the harsh reality the comet has made her live. Her character development is great. She has shown that even though her sickness from the comet is affecting her magic/life forces, she still decides she wants to complete her training. Her training doesn’t go well as she loses every bit of her magic right before her last test, and drastically fails even though I was rooting for her to win. I was disappointed that the judges didn’t give her any leeway due to her circumstances. She was literally a human fighting supernatural beings at this point and she fought she hard at the end and I think she pass.

We learned that time in the Fae lands moves differently to time on earth. Wyatt spends 1 month there In Fae time which is 10 days In earth time trying to figure out a cure to stop Avery from dying.

Wyatt shows a great amount of growth and maturity after he returns from the Fae lands with no help. He explains his reasoning behind his rejection to Avery. She is mature enough to understand his reasons and accept his apology. She then decides she will help find more information about the comet and joins Wyatt in Bulgaria in the famous library that Nicolas works at to find answers before it is too late.

Avery’s life Force is draining fast but the gargoyle helpers have found scripts deciphering a prophecy made 2000 years ago in Fae land time. Avery meets her parents to say her goodbyes because she doesn’t think she will make it. During this the boys work out part of the prophecy. Avery gets even worse and they figure taking her back to the Fae lands will help her. She is basically unconscious at this point and things get worse during the celestial event that they are hoping will save her.

An even greater cliffhanger is at the end of this book and I can’t wait for book 3 because damn the author has made me so invested in the story I cannot wait to figure out how they will stop the prophecy and get Avery back to her old self. I can’t wait to see Wyatt and Nicolas working together (and possibly even her parents too because they are part of the prophecy).

This series has been very different and I am excited for book 3, I just hope it is as good as this one.

Spoilers ahead…
I liked this book a little better than the first.
Avery is losing her magic and her “life force” due to the comet experienced in the Fae Realm. It is happening so rapidly many at the SF are researching magical libraries to determine if there is a way to reverse it. Wyatt, Avery’s squad commander, rushes to the libraries in the fae realm with no leads. Meanwhile, Avery decides to compete in her ambassador trials as the healers do not believe it will hasten the leaking of her powers. Unfortunately, she loses all her magic by the time of her trials and fails the three tests. Wyatt tries to comfort her and spills the beans on the feelings he has been harboring and why he has not pursued their relationship. Avery forgives him and decides to travel with him to the Bulgaria libraries for a last ditch effort to find something that will save her.
Once they are in Bulgaria they meet up with the vampire Nicolas who we have met in the first book. Avery gets some rest, has strange dreams and gets some comfort from the healing witch Hannah. While in Bulgaria sharing a room, Avery and Wyatt give in to their desires and we experience some “spice”. Wyatt formalizes making Avery his official mate. Nicolas and Wyatt learn of a celestial event in the fae lands that might cure Avery as well as a prophecy that seems to be about her. They rush Avery to the fae realm only to watch her die in front of them. She has some type of magical out of the body experience and comes back to life to Wyatt’s relief. Unfortunately, Avery does not remember anything-herself, Wyatt or Nicolas- and creates a force field around her to protect herself from Wyatt. Clearly she has obtained some form of exceptional power through the whole ordeal and we are left with another cliffhanger.
I’m not sure anything changed between the two books as far as the world building, but perhaps I was more invested, at least, in Wyatt and Avery’s ongoing relationship which made the novel more palatable. On to Hunted by Firelight…

Good lord I am EATING these books up!!! With how this series is going I’m going to end up reading every book this woman has ever written! I’m almost mad these books aren’t longer honestly but luckily I can sprint into the next one!! This is my first werewolf series really and I’m LOVING it. Of course there is way more than just werewolves in these books which make it even more interesting. The first book was more of an introduction into the world the author was writing and a journey through the main characters story! This book begins a darker story of what the hell is happening with the FMC Avery! I’m so interested in knowing what is going on with her and why it happened to her specifically. The writing of the author makes it so easy to keep up with the world building and deeper plot of the story! Some books I get lost within all the world building but this author has made it so easy to keep up with also not like keeping it simple! I cannot stop with this series and will honestly be gutted once I finish it!!

WYATTTTT the MMC is everything. I love a book where the male is so obsessed and falling way harder than the FMC! I’ve said this a lot about so many books I read this year but these authors are giving with the MMC’s!!! Like this man is top tier honestly! I can’t wait to see how he makes Avery fall in love with him all over again in the third after what happened at the end of the second! The whole werewolf mate thing is just EVERYTHING! So here I go onto the third! I don’t want Wyatt’s and Avery’s story to end! Let’s dive into the third!!

I didn’t know how this sequel could possibly live up to the greatness of the first installment, but it did. The book picked up right where the second left off. Street has the perfect balance of giving just enough background in case it’s been a while since you read the first book, while not rehashing too much that you already know. I was a little bit nervous that this book would have long periods of separation between the main characters due to Wyatt’s quests to find information, but this was not the case. Wyatt and Avery had plenty of interactions, and they were interesting, passionate, and emotional. Wyatt really learned from his mistakes in the first novel, and he was an even more perfect alpha hero in this book.

The secondary characters were great as well, and I enjoyed the touch of jealousy Nicholas adds to the story without making it a love triangle. The plot was exciting and suspenseful with no slow or dull moments. The cliffhanger was even more shocking than the previous one, and I’m anxiously waiting to see what happens next. I’m also curious to see if there will be any spinoff books based on some of the secondary characters because they have such distinct personalities and subplots of their own.

Overall, this was a fascinating paranormal romance, and it receives my highest recommendations. Street just keeps getting better, and I can’t wait to see what she does next!

*I received an ARC of this novel. This is my complete and honest review.*

Although I’ve barely started this I want to note how offensive I find Wyatt referring to Avery as his mate at this point in the story. Book one made it clear why he “rejected” her but she doesn’t know that (although she should be able to figure it out if she had the brains of a peanut) Also, doesn’t she get to decide whether she wants him as a mate or not? I realize there is a magical pull which seems to supersede any rational considerations but she still should be able to make a choice. What if he’s hurt her so badly that her emotional pain rejects him for all time? Let’s hope she’s not too malleable by supernatural influences, although her reaction to the comet more or less negates that wish.

The book overall is what I would call a place holder. Not much happens as it concentrates on Avery’s deteriorating health caused by the comet. Wyatt finally confesses the truth regarding his actions which would have been so much more logical if he’d just done it at the beginning. So much drama for nothing. We finally discover what his commitment to the Institute is all about.

Wyatt and Avery take one last stab at finding out if there is a cure for her condition by visiting the extensive magical library in Bulgaria. Nicholas, the vampire who had attempted to seduce Avery in the first book, is their contact much to Wyatt’s displeasure. Avery’s condition rapidly worsens. On to book 3.

The second in the series and I was keen to move on to this one.
I like how it progressed on the whole and ended on another cliffhanger that’s kind of made me want to continue again so that’s great but a couple of things made this an ok read opposed to an great one for me.

Firstly perhaps a trigger warning for those who may have dealt with prolonged death/terminal
Illness. I’m not usually one for trigger warnings as not much triggers me personally but this one was a little close to home for me and I wasn’t expecting it. It’s not the book or writers fault at all, it was done well but it did make the experience a little different thank I was expecting for me personally.

Secondly there was a scene as part of the above development that made me a bit uncomfortable. It felt a little ‘there for the sake of it’ for a little while I thought it maybe really relevant to the resolve of the plot but when it turned out not to be, I was a bit put off. Hard to explain without spoilers but just another reason I couldn’t fully immerse in this plot.

Still, character development was great, world building good, magic system pretty solid although some further explanation requires so I will be continuing but after a little break.
Still lots of great anticipation and brooding in this book which I absolutely loved!

✨Brilliant in every sense of the word!!!💜

Firstly....if you've not yet read book one, RUN...don't walk to read it now!!!! This is NOT a standalone and you most definitely need to know the events from the previous book to fully understand everything. Trust me, its oh so worth it!!!!!!

Book two picks up right after the ending from the first book. Emotions are high and that's just the start. If you think you know what's going to happen.....um, yup....think again 😉. There are a few twists and turns, crazy surprises and shockers, and all kinds of supernatural craziness within this glorious gem. Be warned: there's a MASSIVE cliffy at the end that'll leave you desperate for the third book!!! One truly fearless main character shows everyone the sheer magnitude of heart, fearlessness, determination she possesses. She'll need to hold.onto all of that as she's thrown head first into the adventure/mystery of her life. The characters are complex and well thought out, and reside within a brilliantly rich world filled with so many nuances and layers. I can't wait for book three!

This was a great continuation of their story. It did flow much like the first book, however, in that throughout the entire book, not much happens. But, I was definitely much more engaged through this book, even if I really hate the twist at the end.

I will admit, there were many tears shed in this book. I kept feeling the heartbreak, starting around when she failed her test, and then continuing as she was dying. The author did a good job, and I did have to pull out some tissues (kindof awkward while at work, but whatever!).

This book does stretch out like the first one did, though. My idea in the previous review that first two books and the last two books be combined still remains true. These keep going too long with not much happening.

I really hate the amnesia cliffhanger, especially when they finally were able to admit how they feel about each other. I honestly am not really looking forward to having to deal with this for a whole book (hopefully it will not last that long).
I will be continuing to the next book. I have enjoyed the story so far (even though it has been stretched out entire too much, and should have been put into 2 books rather than 4).

Book 2

I flew through this book in a single day. Seamlessly picking up from where the first left off, we dive headfirst into the gripping “what’s killing Avery” mystery. Just like Wyatt, desperate to find a way to save her, I couldn’t stop reading until I knew too!

Avery and Wyatt’s love story takes center stage, and I was so relieved when they finally claimed each other. But, of course, the highs came with lows.

I’m not a fan of the “amnesia” trope, and while it’s frustrating that this will now create distance between Avery and Wyatt again (ugh, just as they truly got together), I’m holding out hope that there’s a good reason for it…

Wyatt had me in tears—he’s such a precious soul and should be protected at all costs. I think something in me breaks alongside the characters when a mate bond gets severed.

Shoutout to Nicholas, who’s quickly growing on me with his vampy charm and surprising tenderness. He clearly cares deeply, and I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to his connection with Avery…

On to book 3, because I can’t stop now!

Can’t wait to continue!

Solid second book! I can’t wait to start the next one! Here’s a quick recap and my two cents.

Quick recap:

Avery discovers why Wyatt had her training reassigned. She works hard to try and pass her final exam, but the side effects of the comet are killing her magic and life force. Wyatt leaves to try and find a cure to Avery’s condition.

My two cents:

This whole book feels like it’s about finding the cure to what the comet did. Not much else happens. So, from that aspect, it’s kind of boring. It’s like New Moon from Twilight. Boring, but necessary.

There is a sex scene. Honestly, I mostly skipped it, because I really wanted to know what happened right after.

I’m looking forward to the next book, because I think there will be more action. This is still a good series and quick read. Give it a try! Happy reading y’all!!

4.5/5 ⭐️
2.5/5 🌶️

Oh my goodness, this series has me ALL IN MY FEELS. This book starts exactly where the last one left off, and is pretty much an entire book of Wyatt trying to figure out how to save Avery.

But the emotions you go through while Avery has to process her oncoming death, her failures she faces from losing her power, and her goodbyes she has to say to her friends, family, and Wyatt ARE INSANE. I was in tears multiple times, so don’t read this book if you just want feel good vibes.

And the ENDING. All that progress made between Wyatt and Avery, and here we are back at square one!?! Like poor Wyatt, finally gets what he wants just to lose it 😭 THIS FREAKING COMET RUINED EVERYTHING.

Once I’ve emotionally recovered I can’t wait to read the next book, I need a Wyatt and Avery happy ending!

3.75🌟 Ummmm. What???!??!!?!?!!!??! It just ends?!?!?!????? Like that?!!!!!??!?! I refuse to acknowledge that ending. This book had me in a chokehold the whole time. I kept thinking “they can’t kill Avery off, there’s still 2 more books”. Yet what they do with her is mind blowing. I feel bad that she failed her final test. I would think that if the judges knew her magic left her right before the test, they would let her redo it with people who didn’t have powers. I got none of Bavar though, I’m quite disappointed. There was that little crumb, but I want to know if he and Elizabeth get it on. I would have also liked to see more of the Bulgarian library. It seems so magical and we only get a few chapters of it. I wish Avery’s parents got to say goodbye to her, especially with how the book ends. What’s Wyatt going to do now? I hope him and Nicholas team up - they would be quite the power duo. Very enjoyable experience, adrenaline was high.

Have Your Tissues Handy

This second book in the series picks up where the first book ended. Avery collapsed in the face lands and Wyatt used a portal key to rush her to the healers at the SF Headquarters. What they discover is a round object in her chest that is draining her magic and her life force. She still doesn’t trust Wyatt although a part of her wants to.

This book takes twists and turns you never expect, with mysterious prophecies and devastating events. I love the way the author developed the characters so that you feel their emotions right alongside them. And I can only warn you that if you’re like me, you definitely will want to have a box of tissues handy.

I can hardly wait to start the next book! My rating for this book: 5 stars! Well done, Ms. Street!
