Grayson Reed is into me.

We are each other’s fiercest opponents in the rink. But now, Grayson’s eyes are stripping me down whenever we cross each other’s paths.

I don’t mind being the object of another guy’s desire, but I also refuse to jump into a stranger’s bed so quickly. It’s just that I’m not really dating material.

And of all the guys on Earth, Grayson Reed is the last person I would give a chance. But if there is one thing everyone knows about Gray, it’s that he is not a quitter.

The more I push him away, the more he tries to get closer. And as he struggles to win me over, I stumble into the very thing I swore I would avoid.

Love.

Our struggles on the ice are nothing compared to the conquest of each other. And when I find out about the dare that had brought us together, my trust is shattered. It will take a lot more courage to fix this mess than it took to win a date with me. And I just don’t know if this playboy is brave enough for a relationship or if his story ends with the conquest.

Icebound Rivals is the fourth novel in the Arctic Titans of Northwood U series. It features one demisexual winger, his playboy opponent, ice-melting heat, and heart-rendering sweetness. You can expect all the usual Arctic Titans shenanigans, a leap from youth to adulthood, and a rollercoaster of emotions. Icebound Rivals can be read on its own, but it's best enjoyed when read in order.

Grayson Reed X Avery Collins
Cute, low angst addition to the Northwood U series.

-bet trope (he made the bet but he’s not an asshole about it and he’s only going to break his own heart)
-“enemies” to lovers (heed the quotations on enemies)
-rival college hockey teams (rivals is more accurate)
-“grumpy”/sunshine (I ♥️ Avery!)
-demisexual rep
-text conversations (super cute and funny)
-sappy, romantic boys
-grand gestures (Grayson only does things big and full steam ahead)

thank you to GRR for the ARC. Of course, all opinions are my own. If I didn’t like it, I just wouldn’t review it.

dnf @ 60%…..the writing in the first part of the book during the build up was seriously surface level and cursory……and the development of characters was shoddy af, like i couldn’t tell u a damn thing about em fr, they’re stale af and forgettable as all hell…..the whole “chase”, grayson trying to convince avery to go out on a date, whatever u wanna call it was devoid of chemistry…..couldn’t feel a damn thing….and the texts/“banter” between them during this was so unfunny…..grayson is a cornball!!😭 plssss mans couldn’t convince me to do anything but throw tomatoes at him💀💀 i’m confused how he had stoic ass avery cracking smiles at allll but i suppose attention is a hell of a drug🤣🤣💀💀💀 lmaooo anyway so basically non existent chemistry between the mmcs until they had sex….of course, that shit was hot af🤞😝🤞 passionate and intimate….but like what’s that gonna do for me when the entire lead up was blandddd….good sex scenes did not make this story less boring and i am unenthusiastic about their hea…..the kicker? i’m excited to read the next book💀💀 i’m in hellllll😭😭 but i mean besties to lovers feat tyler and sebastian??? never not gonna tune in….i swear i’ll quit the series if next book doesn’t deliver (me in the future reading book 10: 🤡🤧) btw i will RIOT if jordan and asher, step bros to lovers isn’t book 6!!!!!!

A MM College hockey rivals to lovers with a dare, seduction, longing, sweet gestures, & few tears! I devoured my #ARC in 6hrs, Loved Avery & Grayson. The friends are the MVPs here 🥺❤️. I hated Spencer 😤.

Grayson is the captain of his hockey team; playful, tad obsessive, joyful, gay playboy yet with the sweetest gestures.
Avery is winger in Artic Titans, Gray's long time rival; quiet & cool like a rock, elusive, but with a sense of humor & softie underneath, figuring out his demisexuality here.

Gray'd watched Av, & the dare gave him chance to make his move. I loved G's patience here, his romantic ideas won me (Av too), their texts are funny 😁, loved how Av's teammates accepted G! They're adorable, belonged ❤️. Their chemistry builds HOTLY, so intimate 🔥.

But then Av finds about the dare (as blurb says). Oof the angst & hurt 🥺 chapters. I thought it'll be a bigger part of story, but made sense to be a great emotional climax. Loved the punches & G's speech 💕. Enjoyed this, excited for next! RTC.

Story Ratings:

POV: 1st person, Dual POV

I have to admit that the whole 'bet' plot device is a weakness for me, I will read that so fast, even though we all know exactly how it's going to play out! I will still be heartbroken for the dude that was the subject of the bet, I will inevitably feel sad for the guy who made the bet and then realises he's arse over tit in love, and it just reinforces the idea that people do be stupid when it comes to peer pressure 😂 just say no and develop a backbone instead kids!

That being said, I loved this story. Avery made me cry and I wanted to hug him so bad. The way he convinces himself that he was right all along to question why on earth someone would ever be truly into him... 🥹🥹🥹🥹

Grayson clearly had unresolved issues due to his shitty parents and he's so desperate for love that you can't help but feel bad for him too. The way he just wanted to do everything possible just to make Avery smile 😍

Definitely my favourite in the series so far.

When you have a bet as a trope, you already know how it all will work out (not a spoiler because it's mentioned in the blurb) and that there will be broken hearts.

But despite I don't like the bet trope, I adored this story because the MCs are so freaking wonderful together!
Avery, from the Arctic Titan, is reserved, detached, focused on school and games and not used to hookups; Grayson, from the Blizzard Breakers, instead, is a flirty playboy. He's always noticed Avery and the bet gives him the excuse tu pursue him.

I loved their interaction because from the very first moments Avery is sincere and candid and Grayson finds himself more and more enthralled by this man and he desperately wants to get to know him. Their text exchange is funny, Grayson said silly things and their banter puts Avery at ease.
Their first date and the following conversation about Avery's sexuality were very well written, I loved how Grayson reacted, how supportive and understanding he was: from that moment, Avery feels that he can trust him completely and their relationship will become more and more romantic and intimate.
Avery was the one who never experienced sexual connection, but I think their first time hit Grayson harder: finally he had someone who didn't pretend but genuinely cared about him.

The revelation part and the days that follow are angsty and awful and I think the author nailed it describing both men's feelings: Avery was devasted to have trusted the wrong person with his body and his dreams; Gray was devasted to have broken the trust of the only man he ever loved.
Everything was just right: their fight, their desperation, the groveling and especially Grayson's speech.

I appreciate Cole's support, but the Arctic guys were just great, all standing up to protect Avery (I actually cried for Beckett simple gesture before the game ans for Sawyer's words to Grayson). I also appreciated how they always were welcoming toward Grayson and never pushed him away for being part of the rival team.

It's been a very emotional read, Hayden Hall delivered another wonderful story and I love every second of it. I can't wait to read more about this guys.

I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review.

A competitors to lovers romance.

I think this was the least favorite of the series thus far but I enjoyed the first one so much that Imma keep going to the end. Hall has been hit or miss for me. But I look forward to seeing what they produce in the future regardless.

This book is exactly what you sign up for. From the get go you know it's the "I'm going after you because of a bet" book. There really isn't any hidden secret or big reveal. It pans out exactly like you'd expect it to. If you like that trope then you'll probably like it more than me.

Both characters are likeable in their different ways. I'd love to see the "best friend" who betrays Gray in the end get what's coming to him in future books. I'd love to see these two go on to keep playing against each other on rival teams. I love how they make the distance work. BUT this begs the question, how close together are these damn colleges? Like, dudes be walking to and from each other's apartments saying something like "it's a bit of a walk" (paraphrasing) but how many university and hockey teams can one city support. I mean, are you walking a few miles? I dunno... it just opened more geographical questions than I got answers for lol. I get hung up on these details when listening to a book.

I was somewhat bored during the book because of the predictable plot so I had to speed it up to make it through.

Ugh. I'm in a bit of an audiobook slump rn with these low stars :/

Kinda disappointed with this one, but it has more to do with the trope than with the MCs, the writing, etc. "Dating someone to fulfill a bet" is a shitty thing to do in the first place, but it always results in the same OTT breakup before the guys find their way back to each other.

I'd love to see an example where the clueless guy tells the person trying to ruin their relationship by telling them about the bet, "Well, the joke's on you, buddy! I know he loves me! It may have been a bet, but now we're so happy!" And then flip the truth teller off and go live HEA with his man. Instead, same ol', same ol'.

First time I've read a book that involved one MC going after the other because of a bet and not immediately hated him.

As one would expect, the bet comes out (not through the MC's own confession) and the other is hurt blah blah blah.

So. There's no innovative take here on that situation. However:

I liked how persistent and intentional Gray was about wanting Avery. Silly and goofy but I get why Avery cracked.

Why don't I hold Gray's bet against him?

Honestly it seemed very obvious that no part of their actual interaction was bet-motivated. That man was down bad for Avery and he kept applying pressure even when they were dating.

He didn't report back on the bet. He ignored the rules of the bet. He shut down his teammates when they joked about Avery.

He wasn't a bad guy. He just made a stupid bet.

My major issue - their dates were giving working MC with lots of disposable income. Not college kid funded dates. But hey. I guess it depends on the college kid.

"He was hot, that Avery Collins, in a fucked up, psycho way. He could stare you down to shreds. I had never seen him smile. Not once. And those eyes. Cold like steel."

I started this book already super intrigued by Avery from his previous small appearances in the series. I wanted to know more about the quiet man, especially because of how much Sawyer from Scoring the Keeper cared about him. Avery may be quiet, but his brain certainly isn't. He just chooses not to make his commentary aloud. I totally felt for him and his struggles. Struggling with your sexuality and also not truly having to words and/or capacity to talk out those feelings comfortably would be so tough. His character also read like someone who may be neurodivergent, which adds another layer to his challenges, for lack of a better term.

Gray was definitely the sunshine to Avery's perceived grumpiness. I didn't like him at first. Anyone who makes a bet with their friends that has the potential to be hurtful to another is a mean thing to do. As we got to know him, I began to understand him better and by the end of the book I really loved him as much as Avery. I have no doubts that he was absolutely devoted to his man and wanted nothing more than his happiness. He cheered every time he got Avery to smile and honestly, I did too. It was lovely seeing Avery come out of his shell a bit and be appreciated by someone besides his best friend.

"Of the billions of people on the planet, how was it that I met the best one?"

I'm super excited that the next book is finally going to give us the story of besties Tyler and Sebastian. Those two are thick as thieves and we've been teased with them by Hayden long enough! I'm also crossing my fingers for a book with Cole, Gray's best friend. He was a good friend to Gray and I think he deserves his own HEA too.

I'm loving this series so much, but I think this is my favourite one so far.
Avery and Grayson were rivals, playing each for a different ice hockey team. They didn't like each other but then there was a bet and Grayson started going after Avery, trying to make him agree to go on a date with him. And once they got to know each other, well things changed drastically.
I absolutely loved this couple! Avery was so special, he felt so much and just wanted to meet someone that he could trust and have a relationship with. Grayson was relentless, he insisted and didn't give up, eventually he got his reward which wasn't winning the bet, but getting to know who Avery truly was.
This book was beautiful and very romantic. I loved everything that Grayson did to win Avery over, how he worked hard to knock Avery's walls down. Avery couldn't resist him and fell head over heels, because there was so much more to Gray than what could be seen at a glance.
Avery and Grayson had much more in common than they thought, they complimented each other so well. Avery being so grumpy was funny especially when Gray was around or sending him text messages and making Avery smile. Those smiles were little treasures that stole Grayson's heart.
I enjoyed so much witnessing them falling in love. It didn't happen overnight, it certainly was a slow burn romance and I loved every single step towards the love they both deserved to have. Like I said, it was a very romantic story with great characters that made the book so easy to read with an engaging plot.
I can't wait to read the next one in the series. I've been looking forward to Tyler and Sebastian's story for a while as it is obvious they are much more than just best friends. Go Titans!

"His broad shoulders were rounded with exercise and his stride was as determined on a hardwood floor as it was on the polished surface of the ice. He charged through the crowd, emotionless and focused, like a mystery in a tight T-shirt."

Icebound Rivals is the fourth book in Hayden Hall's Arctic Titans of Northwood U series and is another cute, low angst, hockey-themed read. This isn't one that I'd class as enemies to lovers, more opposite teams rivals, with demi-sexual rep and a love-match, albeit started by a bet.

You'll enjoy Icebound Rivals if you like:

❣️sports/college romance
❣️rival teams
❣️grumpy sunshine
❣️all the sweetness
❣️some spicy times
❣️HEA

Not my favourite of the series (that goes to the gloriously snarky Big Stick Energy) but still a good read.

Ugh as always Hayden Hall makes me cry! There's always so much passion between the MCs and I just love how they speak to eachother and about eachother and how flowy everything is.

So we meet Avery in the other books, he is quiet and distant and kinda grumpy in a way, he keeps to himself. So obviously from the second he was introduced I knew I wanted his book. There's a fair amount of internal dialogue in this, because that's how Avery is so it works well for him and his character.

Grayson is the captain of a rival hockey team, so there's a lil touch of rivalry to lovers here, but Gray has had his beady lil eyes on Avery for a while.

He finally gets the perfect excuse to approach Avery... because of a bet. This is low angst but ugh you know when there's a bet involved it's gonna get sad and it GOT SAD.

Grayson does some fantastic grovelling though, and it's wrapped and sorted out. They both have a pretty good support especially Avery, and I loved all those interactions. Esp Sawyer, I will forever love Sawyer.

I've been happily waiting for the stepbrothers book we know is coming but the teaser for the next book has killed me off and now I will be waiting VERY IMPATIENTLY for that!!

As always it's by Hayden Hall so I loved it and can't wait for what comes next!

“I’m glad that you exist. I’m glad that you are here. I am so glad that you and I are alive at the same time and in the same place because I could never, ever settle for someone who isn’t you.”

(ENG) I love the way this author writes. Long chapters with little dialog are not usually my favorite style, but he manages to make me enjoy it very much. He exquisitely describes all the feelings the characters go through.
I laugh out loud with Grayson and I totally love Avery. The way they feel about each other is beautiful.
All the Titans have earned a place in my heart, and in this book, rooting for one of their own, I melted with love.

I swear I love each book in this series more than the last! This story was exactly what I needed to bridge the gap between two heavy fantasy novels- a lighthearted & fun romance with two characters who were so romantic and had a precious innocence about them. I loved it!

In this book the MCs are sophomores/juniors in college and neither has had a proper relationship. The way they get to have the “teen romance” butterflies with each other in this story was so utterly sweet, someone better call the dentist 🥹😍

Because of the blurb we all know there is going to be that moment where then “other shoe” drops, but this was written so well. The devastation was palpable from both characters, and the grovel was fantastic!

What to expect:
-Team Rivalry
-Boy obsessed/golden retriever
-“Will you be my boyfriend?”
-Grump that’s actually a marshmallow
-Sawyer continuing to be the team’s ride or die
-Found family
-Bet/Dare trope

Grayson and Avery are rivals. There's no reason for them to fall in love. They shouldn't even be friends.

But then Grayson makes a bet with his friends, one that benefits him greatly, and he is now in Avery's orbit. He's in Avery's everything. Grayson, who actually has a crush on Avery, sets about wooing him. When the bet has been won, Gray keeps going. Pursuing Avery. Because what Gray didn't bet on was losing his heart to his stoic rival. Happy, flirtatious, and obsessive Gray has found his match in a man his total opposite.

Avery is deadpan, stoic, and serious at all times. When Grayson wears him down, he becomes lighter. His seriousness is such that when he laughs or even smiles, his teammates are shocked by the sound and sight. Avery doesn't feel much when he hooks up. He doesn't enjoy himself and he doesn't go back for seconds. He doesn't see love or a satisfying physical relationship in his future. Until Gray. Why his rival is the one to bust through his walls and give him the connection he needs before the physical stuff is beyond Avery, but he's not complaining.

What happens when the bet is found out? Is their relationship strong enough to withstand a foundation built on a lie?

I really loved the pacing of this one. I’m not going to lie I didn’t really care for Grayson and Avery so the prospect of reading their story didn’t excite me but I’m pleasantly shocked that this book and their love is better than some of the rest in the series (although nothing is beating “Big stick energy” rn)
I love the Traditional way to which their relationship unfolded and also what I’m sure is one of the best Demi representations I’ve ever read.
Grayson is some sort of a billionaire? So there’s that trill too because by the stars he spoils the shit out of Avery.
Honestly what made the short of a 5 star reading was the way my heart was hammering to get to the third act breakup we couldn’t escape.
I’m also quite shocked by how much of this was original seeing as making a bet to date someone is pretty common in college romances.
All in all I can’t wait for Sebastian and Tyler book and I will definitely be reading from this author again.

Even though I knew what was coming, it ripped my heart out nonetheless. And at the end of chapter 14 Hayden managed to make me cry. That happens very, very rarely. The angsty part of the story was *chef's kiss*, and the sunshine moments too, and also how the Arctic team stood for their friend.
I loved how he represented demi sexuality, and also how Grey reacted to it, how he accepted and adjusted his behavior accordingly.
I'm not at all good with words, that's clear, but this is definitely one of my favorite Hayden's book and my first 5⭐ of the year.

Avery and Grayson ❤️

4.5 Stars ⭐️

This is hands down the best book so far in this series. Avery and Gray were an absolute blast to read, I adored them both for different reasons. Gray was hilarious and so freaking tenacious, he went after exactly what he wanted. Avery didn't stand a chance against his sweetness once he got started....SWOON!!! The relationship build between these two was extremely endearing, the pacing was perfection and the chemistry between them was blazing 🔥. This really was the perfect blend of giggles, heat and sweet with a touch of drama surrounding their friends but the ending will make your heart so damn happy, it brought joyful tears to my eyes. If you're looking for a really great read, this is it. I absolutely recommend.

Grayson Reed’s the confident, flirty playboy captain of the Breakers while Avery is the more stoic, subdued winger for the Arctic Titans. The differences between them are obvious from the very beginning, setting this up to be an epically sweet rivals to lovers, grumpy/sunshine, college hockey romance with a twist.

In the world of hockey romance, the only thing better than teammates to lovers might be rivals. There’s an innate edge to the dynamic as the MCs work past their feelings of animosity and opposition and attempt to wrap their heads around their attraction. You get all of that from these two, but especially Avery, who seems more than a little confused as to why he’s suddenly caught Gray’s attention.

Aside from their rivalry, the bet that brings them together is the major source of tension, making for a fairly low angst story overall. Gray’s all about the grand gestures, and I enjoyed watching him romance Avery. The connection between them builds slowly and steadily, and it’s hard not to get fully invested in their relationship knowing full well it’s all going to blow up at some point but never knowing when. Hayden Hall uses that buy-in to his advantage for maximum emotional devastation.

Something I really love about this book is how Avery’s demisexuality is addressed and handled. So many times in college romances, the guys seem to have it all figured out. The reality is very few people have anything figured out at that point in their lives, and I like the vulnerability he shows but also the patience and support he’s given. It’s part of what makes the impact of the bet hurt just that much more.

This is the first book I’ve read in this series, so I’ll vouch for the fact that it works as a standalone. After reading it, however, I definitely understand how reading the series in order could add to the overall enjoyment. I went into it not really knowing anything about any of the guys or what they’ve been through, and there seem to be some overlapping timelines for other couples. I’m definitely looking forward to reading their stories soon!

I don't typically like a third act break-up, but Hayden Hall takes his character's groveling to a whole new level. This rivals to lovers story is equal parts sweet, steamy and satisfying. There's just enough hockey to be fun, some interesting friend interactions and a dash of new adult drama... cause they're in college...

While you could read it standalone, I think you'll enjoy the story more if you know some of the other players.

This book felt a bit off because there was no need for the bet as a trope at all. Also, I was uncomfortable at the beginning with how much one MC pursued the other. It was said that both MCs were enjoying the chase but it took me a bit to see that for myself.
Also, the 80% breakup that we could see from miles away - or page 3, is so overdone. Still, it wasn't a bad read and I will carry on to book 5.

Gosh, this story has just everything you need for a good romance. Two lovable layered guys, great sports, struggle, secrets, passion, and love.

Avery and Grayson are opponents on the ice. Because of a dare, Grayson has to make a date with the
beautiful but stiff and emotionally impenetrable Avery.
Leave it to Grayson, he’s capable of everything!

And yes, slowly he melts Avery’s heart and makes him lower his perfectly built walls.
When Avery shows his true self, Grayson didn't stand a chance to not fall deeply in love. They are hot for each other and inseparable.
But dang, Grayson has still a confession to make.

The anticipation was killing me, I couldn’t read fast enough, I was so curious, about what would happen.
Well, it didn’t disappoint, it was smashing good, literally!

A marvelously written, emotional story, with two lovable guys, (and secondary characters), the ice hockey was awesomely present, the content was heartfelt, above that, the story had a movie-worthy finale!, and I’m not talking about Ice hockey!
