Chromium Rise: A Misplaced Adventures Novel

Rate this book
Orphaned and alone in the world, Arvin heads to the only place desperate enough to take the camp of a war chief. Though the elders in charge of assignments aren’t impressed with Arvin, the war chief himself, Evrick, finds his alchemy skills and unique way of solving problems interesting—and possibly useful.

With the help of his brilliant wife Visteria—who has goals of her own—Evrick plans to raise Vastard from its humble standings into a legitimate Fourteenth Kingdom, equal to Greenshade and Tyrrane in power. He sets Arvin to solve a mystery locked below the sand in an ancient underground ruin, a source of power unlike anything any of them have ever seen.

When Arvin and Visteria make a breakthrough, their celebration is cut violently short by the arrival of a vicious, unkillable race of beings that quickly ravage the human the Chromium. Now Arvin and Visteria must use all of their skills to thwart the rise of the Chromium or the Fourteenth Kingdom will fade before it ever has a chance to shine. And the chromium will spread across the Thirteen Kingdoms destroying all in their wake, and possibly beyond.

Their time is running out.

Characters have depth and dimension. You care about them almost immediately! Their trials and struggles are your own. Their successes and failures too. I can’t wait for the next book in a year!!

I picked up this book as an ARC copy. I absolutely loved every page. Young Arvin finds himself alone and finds himself in the midst of an invasion of chromium monsters. Together with a band of animal friends, he attempts to survive against the onslaught of terrifying creatures. This book keeps you guessing and I was hanging on to every word on every page. I am extremely excited for what this book has to offer. It is well written and the plot and characters are well written as well. I really enjoyed this story and am excited for what comes next from William. I highly recommend this book to any sci-fi, fantasy, monster fan and you will not be disappointed by this book. A true 5 star read I'm truly glad I came across. This book has it all.

I really enjoyed this storyline. Arvin the alchemist provides a unique viewpoint that was both quirky and strangely relatable. While typical fantasy does not include portals with metal monsters climbing through to conquer the known world, this book is far from typical in all the right ways. The worldbuilding comes to life as Arvin and his band of polymorphed hybrids run for their collective lives and multiple societies are turned on their heads. I loved the plot twists, the stakes, and even the character backstories. Arvin's daring escapes by the seat of his pants left me flipping pages almost faster than I could read. I'm dying to see what happens in the next book.

I loved Chromium Rise! It was a fast read. Realistic characters, fascinating plot, exciting action. First Class world-building. Gets better and better. I almost built a pillow fort to survive the first scary part.

Excellent transitions between characters’ perspectives between chapters. Interesting perspective from animals. Perfect balance of action, humor, and characters. Galaini is a master storyteller I can’t wait for a sequel!

Full disclosure: I'm related to the author.

Galaini has a talent for writing antagonists that are not moustache-twirlingly evil and protagonists that are not clean-cut perfect paragons. Characters develop, grow, and are engaging. The setting is not Galaini's own, but he has taken his little corner of the world and made it rich and vibrant. An enjoyable and engaging kickoff to a trilogy for sure, and a fun fit into Kevil Petway's world.
