Will I'm impressed. A lot of laughs with all the characters, that also work together well to carry the the story to its end. This is nice work for one from the author. Lets see if she can keep it going.
The story: decent, some twists and turns, interesting detective work going from one clue to the next, digging for information, etc. Satisfying ending with a tiny cliffhanger to tease the reader on to the next book.
The characters: Meh. Maybe I watch too many FBI and detective shows, or have interacted with too many in law enforcement (BIL was an asst Chief of Police), but lead investigator conversations are short, snappy. Not the case here. This FBI special agent MC is supposedly not good with people, a loner. Her dialogue sounds anything but. She comes across either brash or as a people pleaser. Quite the disconnect. Bottom line: inauthentic dialogue threw me out of the story way more than once.
Needs an Editor: Grammar. Punctuation - so many errors. Inconsistency with names, as in, a character addresses another character by the dead person's name (whose body lays in front of them). More than once, a character's name totally changes on one page, then changes back again in the next paragraph or on the next page. I don't have time to figure out who is who simply because the author couldn't be bothered to proofread more carefully or hire a good editor. A few goofs I can put up with. There were far too many for me to read another book by this author. Three stars is generous.
Chief of staff to the president is horribly murdered sitting at his desk in the White House. With security so tight there, no one can conceive how that could happen. The FBI was called in to oversee the investigation. So is the capital police, secret service and city police. They were to work together as a joint force to solve it. Since Jessie is FBI, she is in charge and she has to figure out how to get them to work as a team since they all want to be the boss. She pairs them up into teams using each one’s strength and access. Of course none are too happy about it but She is the boss. After teaming up and assigning duties another is murdered. This time it’s a senator in the capital.
I found the story interesting but not riveting. But they do learn to work together according to their strengths. They manage to solve the cases be for the next one is murdered.
"His Other Side" by Rylie Dark is the first book in the Jessie Reach Mystery series, and it’s a fast-paced political thriller. The story follows FBI agent Jessie Reach as she tackles a string of high-profile political murders, leading her team in a tense game of cat-and-mouse. The book is packed with twists and turns, which makes it a pretty engaging read. It’s been well-received overall, with a 4.28 rating on Goodreads from over 1,200 readers. Fans seem to enjoy the suspenseful plot and the way it keeps you guessing. That said, there are a few downsides — some readers found the character development a bit shallow, and the dialogue felt unnatural. Plus, there were some editing issues, like grammatical errors and mix-ups with character names, which can be a little distracting. If you’re into political thrillers and mystery, it’s worth checking out. Just go in knowing it’s a solid story but might not be the most polished book out there.
I liked the premise and the idea of a collective team from different branches of law enforcement working together...I do hope this team continues into the next instalments. I wasn't crazy about Jessie's character. I don't think it is clear whether she wants to be a bad ass loner or if she is longing for companionship and easy connections that Matt seems to engender. The story line was decent, but the ending was a departure from the brilliant careful killer into a crazy lunatic. With his careful murders, that change didn't suit me personally. His careful planning was exposed far too easily as well.
There were a TON of editing errors in this story. Names changed so that I was wondering who the author was referring to...sometimes the names changed on the same page. I could do a better job. Hire me.
Another good read! Jessie Reach is a behaviorist with the FBI. She partners with the Capital Police to investigate the murder of a politician, fearing (and later confirming) he is the first victim of a serial killer. Can they find the killer before he strikes again? What I liked about this book is that it was a quick listen and the story was well paced, so I never lost interest. I was able to connect with the characters and I wanted the best for them. The ending was somewhat predictable but still had some surprises as well, and it let enough curiosity for me to feel compelled to check out the next book in the series when it comes out.
I really liked the team that was put together for this book. FBI, Capital Police, Secret Service, etc. what I’m not surprised at is that the FBI agents mother was murdered and the murderer was never found. Most of these books have a similar thread to them. I do find it interesting that her father is the FBI Chief she works for and she’s risking A LOT, well everything really, to did I to her mothers murder by starting with his confidential file. I’m very interested to start the next book in the series.

A thrilling read. A new team is working on a case at the White House but they haven't been able to find any clues that leads them to the killer. Can Jessie & her interagency team find the killer before they kill again? Will she be able to prove to her boss that she can do this? But the case turns personal and she realizes that the past needs to be looked at closely again. A good interesting read. Good characters
When a politician is murdered in his office, FBI agent Jessie Reach is sent to find the murderer. Results are expected immediately, if not sooner, but first she has to get a team together and give them a little time to gel, but then another body is found. It seems the murderer does not like people cheating on their partners. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next in the series.
Jessie was an FBI profiler and was sent to solve the murder of the Chief of Staff at the White House. Before his body was cold another high ranking official was murdered. Jessie is a strong character and Matt, her new partner is good with people. The combined team from several agencies became a well oiled machine. After the killer tried to kill her father, Jessie herself had unanswered questions. Off to read second book.
Started pretty slowly. Got more interesting as I read further, but there were a number of grammatical errors to distract the reader. Not a lot of depth to the plot and of course the reader is left wondering regarding Jessie's father. However, I'm afraid I didn't enjoy the book enough to read its sequel.
His Other Side is a light, easy criminal investigation read. The characters are likeable and the author wrote them with a bit of mystery to find out as the series continues. The criminal was not fully developed or explained which is always irritating--he's part of the story too. This is not a deep read-think Patricia Cromwell--but interesting enough when one wants a quick read.
I enjoyed the story, but the errors were distracting. In many places, different names were used for a character. It was confusing and I had to go back to see who the author was talking about. The fact that there was a cliffhanger at the end was disappointing. It’s a teaser to get you to buy the next book.
An entertaining murder mystery with a soft romance side story. Additionally, there's the internal struggles of the main character searching for answers when there aren't any - at least not in this book. Whole the book stands alone, there's the thread to tie you to the next in a series. Enjoy the book, I did.
Only a short novel but an easy, engrossing read that has prompted me to try other books by this author. Would be a good book to read on a plane as it so brief. The author creates suspense and plot twists that kept me wanting to read and not be interrupted. Marred by some grammar and spelling errors. Needs a good edit.
This book sucked. I'm so sorry Rylie Dark! It was so bad. It was wordy and didn't need to be. Repetitive, and it felt like there was a page limit she needed to hit and didn't. You couldn't guess the killer because we didn't know it. Everyone saying that oh yeah it was suspenseful it was because there was no lead to who it was.

IT was my first book by Dark. What hooked me was the easy conversational narrative. I kept highlighting the witty observations by Jessie and her team, the idioms that brought life to human characters. A simple plot without structural complications. I recommend the book to lovers of crime scenes, the FBI versus local law enforcement.
Jessie is the leader of a new FBI team that has been put together to work with local law enforcement in the search for a cunning criminal who hides in plain sight and commits crimes in the most unexpected places. At the same time, she is working on this case she´s faced with doubts regarding her father and his responsibility in her mother's death. The story is fast-paced, well-written, and grabbed my interest from the beginning. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series! I thank Ms. Dark and her publisher for this ARC.
First Rylie Dark book I have read. Glad I did. Plan to read more. Enjoyed the Jessie Reach character as well as her supporting cast. The author also has several other series that I plan to check out.
Jessie Reach may have met her match. Can she take the well deserved advice from her coleader, realizing she may not have all the answers, and in the way she treated other team members.
Great characters in a who done it at a political level. Investigative team from multiple agency origins must cooperate to find a serial killer bent on revealing hidden secrets.
For a book one the story line as a profiler is a good. The group worked with each other as a team in order to find out who was killing these public figures. Not bad for a first time.
I read this book after I had finished the rest of the series, didn't realize I started with book 2. This filled in some of the question I had about the relationship between Jesse and her father known as Caesar.
Rylie Dark was the writer. There were two killers who were adulterer’s. Jessie is called by her father as the head of FBI. She is called to be the head of a group of leaders from the staff of the White House. Jeanette Stracner
An interesting and intriguing story. My first book from this author, will read others now. The book keeps your interest and is in danger of being a “page turner” which it is!
