The Rake and the Rose

Rate this book
The only way to expose a rake is to conspire with one…in this lively novel from USA Today bestselling author Eva Devon

For as long as pamphlet writer Rose Digby can remember, certain men of the ton gallivant about town with their own set of rules. Whether it’s gambling, drink, or women, these playboys of London suffer no consequences. When someone she holds dear falls prey to a rake of the highest order Rose is determined to expose them all. But she needs a way to enter their world undetected…

Alexander Markby, the sixth Earl of Derby is her brother’s closest friend and is positively rife with roguishness. Too much money, too much time, and much too well-endowed…with good looks (obviously). He’s the perfect cover to help Rose infiltrate his world. He has just one rule. In the name of “protecting” her—she must pose as his mistress. The very idea!

Now Rose will have to become what she loathes. She’ll have to flutter her eyelashes, flatter the Earl of Derby, and pretend to be completely, utterly, and totally smitten with him. But it’s for a good cause. Because there’s nothing more dangerously charming—and completely ruinous—than a rake. No matter if he’s friend, foe…or hiding a secret that will shake the foundations of Rose’s world.

This is book three in the Once Upon a Wallflower series, but it can be read as a stand-alone.
The Rake and the Rose was a bit of a slow burn, but I really liked Rose and Alexander. This was a nice conclusion to this series, and it was wonderful getting cameos from the characters in the first two books.

Overall, this series as a whole was lovely, and I highly recommend it. They are all quick and satisfying reads.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I have read The Duke and the Dressmaker by Eva Devon and thought that was such an excellent read that I knew The Rake and the Rose would be enjoyable as well. Although it can be read as a standalone, I think the others should be read before this one. I love Rose’s character as she is a strong and opinionated woman. I couldn’t blame her for not forgiving Alexander for abandoning her. There is a beauty inside of her that makes her want to help those who can’t speak for themselves. The Earl of Derby, Alexander portrays himself as a rake of Society but seeks to having someone to love and the only one he wants to marry is Rose. This was a quick read for me. The inclusion of poetry and readings made for a lovely benefit to the story. Although at times I became frustrated with a few things i.e., characters and treatment of others, the book still managed to hold my attention and deliver me a HEA that I hoped it would do. Thus far, Ms. Devon as an author has never failed me with her novels I have read. Looking forward to reading the next in this series.

The Rake and the Rose “ is the third installment in Eva Devon's series, and I must say, it's my favorite one so far.
The story revolves around the intriguing relationship between Rose Digby and Alexander Markby, the sixth Earl of Derby. Their history is filled with unspoken love, misunderstandings, and a generous dose of secret acts of kindness.
Alexander, a man who appears to be a reckless rake on the surface, hides a heart of gold and a deep affection for Rose. Rose, on the other hand, is unwavering in her judgment of him, stemming from past grievances. What sets this historical romance apart is Rose's unyielding character and her commitment to her causes, making her journey of personal growth all the more satisfying.
The plot unfolds smoothly, with a perfect blend of misunderstandings and surprising twists, ultimately leading Alexander and Rose to their well-deserved happily ever after. Eva Devon masterfully crafts a tale of love, forgiveness, and redemption, making "The Rake and the Rose" a must-read for fans of the genre.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley, opinions are my own.

Rose has her own views of the world as seen from the pain of her father's downfall and her mother's death. Known for her reforming pamphlets, she asks her friend from childhood to introduce her to the world of courtesans. Alexander, the sixth Earl of Derby, is familiar with the world of courtesans. When Rose asks for his help, how can he refuse. He's always loved her, but he's breaking his vow to her brother to never see her. He can't pass up this chance to be with Rose. She thinks of him only as a rake who has wasted his life in pleasure. This could end in disaster. Years of painful misunderstandings and the anguish of missed opportunities, Devon grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. Descriptive open bedroom door.

The Rake and the Rose is the third installment in Eva Devon’s Once Upon a Wallflower series and it is a wonderfully charming addition! Devon’s writing is really sweet and evocative. Through clear intensions and well developed characters, Devon’s story shines. I found this novel to be a sweet and quick read. This series embraces the feeling of a fairytale with out the magic, through class differences, through dreams, and through love.

This novel is easily read as a stand alone, and a lovely sensual romance with a hero who would do anything for his heroine. I really enjoyed watching Rose and Alexander fall in love with each other. Their romance is one that slowly builds as they truly learn who the other is and how they treat each other. It is always lovely watching a heroine learn that the hero is not the rake she assumed he was. I really enjoyed that the hero is absolutely smitten with the heroine and that he will do anything to keep her safe.

Eva Devon is definitely a historical romance author who should be on your radar if she is not. I am also easily charmed by her stories and her romances are always full of sensuality and chemistry.

Thank you so much to Entangled: Amara and NetGalley for an eARC, all thoughts and options are my own.

The Rake and the Rose is book #2 in the Once Upon a Wallflower series by Eva Devon- an auto buy author for me published 10/30/23. Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled for this ARC ❤️! I voluntarily give my honest review and all opinions are my own.

This standalone historical romance features the 6th Earl of Derby-Alexander- and a low born, pious pamphlet writer Rose Digby. They grew up together along with Rose's brother Harry-Alexander's bff. The 5th Earl of Derby kicked the Digbys out after their father turned to debauchery. Alexander felt responsible for Harry and Rose, so he made sure Harry went to Oxford and Rose had a place and an allowance so she could be independent. Now Alexander wants to marry Rose, but she and Harry won't hear of it. Alexander is rake and Rose's job is to expose these kinds of men so women will not fall victim to them.

I thought Rose was far too judgmental of Alexander without really knowing him. Lily-Duchess of Ashbridge- makes the same opinion known even if Rose doesn't want to hear it. Rose had such terrible ideas about rakes and the evil they spread. Alex is nothing like his father or her father, both deceased rogues. Alexander vowed to do better while still enjoying his privileged life. He's a great patron of the arts and music and he's a good man. It takes Rose faking as his mistress to investigate women and men who live as mistresses and keepers. I liked Evelyn Truebridge, she had such high self-esteem, knew what she wanted, and how to get it. I believe Rose admired how Evelyn played the ton and always won.

Rose secretly wanted to "walk on the wild side" with Alexander. She wanted to be with him when they were younger, and now he's even more desirable. She suggested they hook up and Alex happily obliged. Harry warned Alex to stay away from Rose, knowing he could ruin her. I liked their boxing matches, especially with the Duke of Montrose to instigate. Alexander's grandmother -Dowager Countess of Derby- did not care for Rose and warned Alex against having feelings for her. She was quick to arrange a marriage for him with a wealthy and docile woman-Lady Penelope. It's only when Alexander confesses his true feelings about Rose does the Dowager encourage the love match.

I loved the couples from The Beast and the Bookseller and The Duke and the Dressmaker making an appearance or two. I couldn't connect with Rose because she needed to get off her soapbox and have some fun. She had so many preconceived notions about rakes and Alexander. He had to work too hard to get Rose to stop judging him and just love him.

Rating 3.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐

Alexander & Rose are a wonderful romance for the ages. This is so close to a second chance romance though the first chance was that of missed opportunity, too young to know the way. Years have past and though Alex vowed to stay away as his rakish ways could only corrupt, he’s never been far. Always in the shadows taking care of Rose and her brother Harry, his best friend. Separated by class and circumstance, a tale as old as time itself. But with the guidance of friends that love finds a way, these two make their way through with some shenanigans of disguise along the way. Their tale is that of passion, excitement and learning to believe in oneself. I have greatly enjoyed this series and it was such fun to see James & Lily again and have them be instrumental in connecting these two. A beautiful story.

Rose Digby is trying to get enough courage to ask Alexander Markby, the sixth Earl of Derby to help her research about rakes since she has no personal experience to draw upon. She writes pamphlets about different causes to help others

Alexander has loved Rose almost as long as they've been friends, so he agrees to help her, but she has to act as his mistress to pull off the research. It does not take long before flames ignite and they soon can't keep their hands off each other - not that it will go anywhere.

A sexy, short and fun novella! Highly recommend - it's one of the better friends to lovers romances I've read in a long time.

3.5 rounded to four stars. I struggled a bit with this one. Usually, I am all about the heroines; if there’s someone I don’t like, it’s the hero. Not this time. I loved Alexander; he was very much a cinnamon roll type of hero. But Rose frustrated me to no end. Her judgmental nature, binary thinking, and self-righteousness were deeply unpleasant, and she and her brother were downright cruel to Alexander. Speaking of the brother…good grief. What an unpleasant, hateful man. He claimed to be Alexander’s friend, accepted his financial help, yet treated him with total disdain. All I could think as I read this book was, with friends (and lovers) like these, who needs enemies? Alexander deserved better.

5 stars for Alexander, 2 for the Digby siblings. Thanks to the publisher for providing me with an eARC; all opinions are my own.

Eva Devon is one of the authors on my "favorite authors" list. This is my 62nd book by her. I read one book in 2016 and didn’t pick her up again until 2018 and have been reading her ever since. I just enjoy her writing and stories. Always a good read.

I am not sure how I feel about this story. I mean, it was a good read but I just wasn't feeling the characters. I think Rose was a bit much and Alexander was too laid back. I just didn't feel their personalities meshed. Not because he is ton and she isn't. I just didn't get them as a couple.

The story is a meaningful read, where a young woman forces people of nobility to open their eyes to how women who are considered mistresses are treated. I liked reading Rose and Alexander’s story. As many of times I read Alex throwing himself at Rose’s feet, I was hoping that she would get the hint. For me it took the woman forever. Alexander’s character is my favorite. His character was written perfectly. The book is one that for a reader to pass time with. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

If you are looking for a book that runs the gamut of emotions, this is the one! It does not take long to feel frustrated with this rather judgmental heroine, Rose. It is understandable to be desperately hurt after all she went through, but to see her make the hero, Alexander feel so unworthy when none of her issues was his fault just made me very cross. I found it hard to like her for a third of the book. Her brother was no better and he is. Vicar! I loved how Alexander did his dead level best to right wrongs that were done and reach out to others in trouble as well. Seeing Grandmama’s forceful nature was no surprise, but it was riveting how she changed the course of Alexander’s life. I loved the poetry, the readings, the screw-ups, especially James and the ending was perfect. Love, changed lives and an HEA to remember! I did think that some of the book kept harping on the same issues over and over and got a little bored with that, but otherwise wonderful!

I received this ARC copy for free and these are my own opinions.

Normally I love an Eva Devon story. Sadly, this was one of my least favorite from her. I really liked Alex from the other books in the series and was excited for his story, but sadly it was a bit lackluster. First off, Alex is really not a rake like at all? Yet we are told over and over again that he is. But we saw nothing of the sort and Alex just says that he is, but there is no proof. Honestly, all he does is go to these salons and gentleman's clubs to find writers and artists to support. He doesn't go around seducing every woman he meets (or really any at all?) so I found it very weird that everyone was just like HE'S A RAKE! STAY AWAY! It made no sense. The backstory of his best friend Harry and the sister Rose was sad for sure, but it kind of went to extremes. I don't know why exactly Harry would tell Alex to stay away from Rose. And while I understand that their position and everything was yanked out from under them, they both went to extremes in their responses to it: Harry basically goes on penance and works to become a vicar and apparently goes on a 10 mile walk every single day? While Rose is like a social justice gal who writes pamphlets that are popular, but her latest pamphlet idea is to tear down and expose rakes and mistresses? But she understands why the women would go into the profession. She was a little wishy washy on her thoughts about things even before she met the people in the club that she did, especially the ideal mistress Evelyn, who I adore and really want a story about (lowkey ship her and Harry and they've never even met, but could you imagine?). Anyway, I liked that Rose learned and understood more as she did more research, but I really hated the way she treated Alex most of the time, and yes it was to protect herself, but she completely ignored every action he did to cling to this really unsupported claim that he was a rake. I actually think she needed to grovel more after their big blow up because it really was all her issues.
I still love Eva Devon as an author and her ability to make me love her side characters and how interesting their lives seem to be in the little snippets we get is unmatched. I always want books for all her side characters.
Overall, I would say this is a 3.5 star, but marking as 3 star since I didn't love how Rose and Harry treated Alex most of the time. Very interested to see what she writes next! (Though I would love a spin off with Evelyn and the other women or even the artists that Alex sponsors from the club. I think that would be really fun)

Into the world of Rakes to try write about their lifestyle. Rose trys to get into an exclusive club and finds the only way in is by pretending to be her childhood friend's Mistress. Oh boy is it a world where she doesn't quite fit.

The biggest problem for Alex is that he promised Rose's brother that he would stay away from her. That was the case for years, but now, their reacuaintance causes so many secrets. Were they always destined for eachother?

This is a typical friend's to lovers book with a lot of sneaking around. Both Alex and Rose are trying to do good in their own ways.

I liked this short romance and appreciated the look at rakes being a little different than what is on the surface.

This was such a great book in the Once Upon A Wallflower series. So grateful that Brittany Z at Entangled sent me a surprise eARC! She is amazing! 🥰

This would be another great standalone, but definitely recommend reading the other books before starting - Book 2 was a fun read, and the FMC/MMC do come up here too (without taking centre stage). I still haven’t read Book 1, I will do so soon.

I don’t recall Book 2 being as dark as this one. I thought this will be another light read - I devoured this quickly, but Eva wrote so beautifully about grief and pain. The characters are all so much fun and with such depth to them too.

Can’t wait to see who Book 4 is going to be about!

I am such a fan of Eva Devon, she writes snappy sweet historical romances and this one was no different; sort of star crossed childhood friends and fake dating going on here; lots of tropes and all done well. I was worried Rose wouldn't realize she was incredibly judgy and that sometimes it's better to bend than break--but the character development for both H and h was VERY well done here!

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is a continuation of the Once Upon a Wallflower series by Eva Devon, and is the romance of two characters that were background/secondary characters from earlier on in the series - journalist/pamphlet writer Rose Digby who wrote the love story of the Duke and Duchess of Ashbridge, from book 2, and Alexander Markby, the Earl of Derby.

Rose and her brother grew up with Alex, on the Derby estate as children. But they were separated abruptly when the previous Earl threw the Digbys out because of the licentious behaviour of their artist father. His descent into sin and debauchery not only lead to them losing their home, but caused a downward spiral for the entire family with the loss of their finances, home, security, and reputation, with the father eventually dying in an asylum, and their mother suffering and eventually dying as well, leaving the Digby siblings learning to cope independently, with a disgust of all things rakish and immoral. They each follow a path working against immorality and to try to expose the evils of debauchery, with the brother Harry studying to become a vicar, and Rose writing pamphlets exposing the ills of rakishness and debauchery.

Alex was also very affected by his father's decision to evict the Digbys. He was very close to them, and appeared to have a childhood crush on Rose, but his relationship with them was crushed by his father, who threatened to ruin them further if Alex continued to have any relationship with them. The Digby children were ignorant of this threat, and Rose always felt abandoned by Alex.

When Alex became the Earl, he secretly continued to follow and help the Digby siblings, including secretly supporting Rose as she pursued her writing, and paying for Harry's education, while also engaging in supporting other artists so that many could pursue their art without the worries of being homeless, starving, etc. He also reestablished a friendship with Harry, but was warned away from rose by Harry, who did not trust Alex. Everyone presumed Alex is a carefree rake, because of his pursuit of the pleasures of life, but no one bothers to delve deeper and see Alex for the good man that he is, who just loves life and wants to enjoy the beauty of it, but never acts in ways that would intentionally do harm to others, unlike other rakes.

Rose, however, was thwarted in her attempts to investigate a private club, and secretly engages Alex's help to gain entry, disguising herself to be his mistress so she can speak to other courtesans and get an idea of the lifestyle. Alex felt backed into a corner, knowing that nothing would stop Rose from her goal, and at least if she were with him, he could protect her, but was also now forced to lie to his friend Harry. Also, he never stopped loving Rose, but now was being driven mad by being near the object of his desires.

I loved Alex from even Book 2, where he appeared to be the bon vivant friend who loves people, seems to be a good friend, and is far more observant then people likely give him for. He obviously enjoys the joys and beauty of life, but is judged by others for being a rake, and obviously many do not bother seeing more than just the superficial about Alex. Including his so-called friends Harry and Rose. I really did not find myself liking either of the Digbys very much because of how judgemental and dismissive they are of Alex, despite their willingness, especially Rose, to essentially use him. Then so quickly turn on him and reject him. I really felt he was poorly treated by the Digbys. Sure they suffered as children because of their father's behaviour, but as adults, they became quite judgemental, and sanctimonious making them blind to many things including the true nature of people, such as Alex.

So ultimately, I found myself not liking Rose and her brother, and how they made Alex feel. I generally liked the story and Alex as a character, but I feel that Rose and Harry, while they did come around, really need to redeem themselves to earn his love considering how disrespectfully and poorly they treated him.

Years ago, Rose Digby learned that you can never trust a rake, the point was driven home when their father, a renowned artist and rake, was dumped by his patron, and the family was evicted from their home. Her father died in an asylum and their mother wasted away to nothing, dying not long after, despite Rose’s attempts to save her. These events hurt, but that pain was nothing when compared to the betrayal done to her by her friend and secret crush, Alexander Markby, the son of her father’s patron, The Earl of Derby. After their eviction, Alex cut off all communication with Rose and her brother, Hugh. Now years later, Rose has dedicated her life to warning others of the dangers of overindulgence and the overreaching power of the nobility, writing books and pamphlets on the subjects. But when she is investigating a new story and is denied entry to an exclusive club, she sees the answer to her dilemma walking out the door. She confronts Alex in his coach and all but demands that he help her. He agrees, but she wonders if she has made a huge mistake by agreeing to pose as his mistress. There will be lessons learned on this adventure, but will she learn that pleasure is not the root of all evil, or will her stubborn nature prevent her from finding true happiness?

Alex Markby, the new Earl of Derby was a young man with no power when his father cast out the Digby family and has spent the years since his father’s death trying to right the wrongs done to them. His best friend, Hugh Digby appreciated his help but felt that Alex was too much of a rake and forbade him to have any contact with his sister Rose. Alex is heartbroken, but agrees, not wanting to taint Rose with his reputation. But when Rose demands his help, he sees the opportunity to show Rose that he is not the rake she believes him to be and that taking pleasure is one of life’s joys and not the road to ruin she believes it to be. But Rose is a tough nut to crack and just as he thinks he is getting through to her, things begin to fall apart and he will have to face the fact that her fear may be a barrier he cannot break.

This was a good story, a bit darker than the previous books, but still very good and quite emotional. My heart broke for Alex, he truly has a heart of gold and was constantly judged by the Digby siblings. I began to wonder at Rose’s supposed intellect when she clearly couldn’t see the truth about Alex and her steadfast and unrelenting prejudice against him. I understood she had suffered, but she held on to her disdain for much too long and didn’t grovel nearly enough. That aside, the book is filled with lots of emotion, secrets, misinterpretations, misconceptions, steamyish love scenes, a hero with a heart of gold, a no-nonsense grandmother, an overprotective brother, dukes who talk too much, and finally a HEA. This is the third book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone title as the series is very loosely connected. I enjoyed this book and would be happy to recommend the title to my fellow historical romance readers.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

Ms. Devon is one of my favorite authors, and this book doesn't disappoint. Alexander Markby, sixth Earl of Derby, has loved Rose Digby since they were children, but when her father breaks the contract with Alexander's father, he throws them off the land while Alexander is powerless to stop them. When Alexander finally becomes the new earl, he does everything in his power to secretly help both Rose and her brother Henry enjoy better lives. As a matter of fact, Alexander is the benefactor for a number of other artists--people who would not otherwise be able to hone their craft while trying not to starve. He portrays himself as a rake and a darling of Society, but he longs for a loving partner. Of course, the only one he wants to marry is Rose.

Miss Rose Digby was devastated when Alexander pulled back from their friendship after the horrible circumstances with her father. She's harbored an intense dislike for his frivolous ways while she labors away, writing pamphlets trying to better the lives of those less fortunate. Of course, she doesn't know that Alexander is the one behind her payments. When she comes up with a crazy idea to help fallen women, she must seek Alexander's help in infiltrating a pleasure house.

This story was a little different than the usual historical romance because it's a woman who is immovable in her opinion. Rose will not forgive Alexander for abandoning her, and she has left all joy behind in her life, trying to make things better for those who cannot speak for themselves. Rose has a lot of growing and changing to do, and I loved how Ms. Devon made sure her feelings did not change on a whim. Alexander has always been a good man who enjoyed the beauty in life and tries every day to help someone. When he agrees to help Rose, he can't help but hope her opinion of him will change. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to happen. This is a well-crafted story, and the plot moves along nicely. I did think Rose was a bit harsh in her judgmental way. Through a myriad of misunderstandings and a few twists in the book, Alexander and Rose finally get their happily ever after.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy, and all opinions are my own.

Book 3 in the Once Upon a Wallflower Series opens with the words "I could marry your sister..." followed by a confirmed rake rightfully getting socked in the jaw by the sister's brother. A promising start to an enchanting story where said rake promises to leave his best friend's sister alone and then proceeds to break his word.

The story revolves around Alexander Markby, the sixth Earl of Derby, and Rose Digby, a writer who advocates for the rights of the impoverished and downtrodden. While Alex and Rose share a desire to help people, they have very different approaches to achieving their goals. Alex uses his wealth and prestige to support artists and their work, while Rose writes pamphlets to raise awareness about social issues.

When Rose wants to infiltrate an exclusive club to expose the nefarious behavior of certain members of the upper classes, she turns to Alex for help. He reluctantly agrees, but only because he wants to protect her. As Rose delves deeper into the club's inner workings, she realizes that her preconceived notions about the upper classes and Alex in particular may not be entirely accurate.

While I generally enjoy Eva Devon's books, I struggled with this one. Rose is portrayed as cruel and insensitive towards Alex, constantly insulting and belittling him. Alex, on the other hand, is a generous and kind-hearted person who secretly helps Rose and her brother pursue their dreams over the years after their family us thrown off his family's estate. Despite Alex's unwavering support, Rose remains stubbornly opposed to the idea of being with him other than as a tool for her research.

Ultimately, while the book had its moments of charm and the poetry and readings were lovely, it was not my favorite of Ms. Devon's works. That being said, I appreciated the author's depiction of the need for a feminine movement in the Regency era.

In conclusion, if you're a fan of historical romance novels and enjoy stories with strong heroines and a touch of social commentary, you may enjoy The Rake and the Rose. While the repetitive nature of the story and the treatment of certain characters may be frustrating, the book still manages to deliver a satisfying HEA.

Thank you to Ms. Devon for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectations of a positive review.

Alexander, Harry and Rose were childhood friends. Harry and Roses father was an artist and lived on the estate with their mother. Alex was the only son of the Earl of Derby. Life was great for the three friends till Harry’s and Roses father fell into drink, gambling and ruined everything. Alex’s father threw the family off the estate not caring that they had nothing and nowhere to go. He forbids Alex from having anything to do with them. Now Alexander is the Earl of Digby and Harry is his best friend. After a promise made to Harry, he had not seen or spoken to Rose in years. Alex spends his life trying to help others and undue some of the evil his father did. Alex has always loved Rose and feels he is unworthy of her. He was not able to stand up to his father and save her. Harry has devoted his life to being a Vicar, a life without gossip. While his sister Rose is now a writer of pamphlets to try and help others avoid the path their father took. She knows that Alex is a rake and has had a number of things written about him in the gossip sheets. He left her after both him and her brother went away to school. Never answering her letters or calling on her. She sees him as the rest of society does, just what he wants them to see and think. When she needs to get into an exclusive gentleman's club to write about what rakes do there she turns to Alex for help. Never thinking what might happen being close to him again. To gain entrance to the clubs she will have to act the part of his mistress! All three of our characters have so much to learn, teach and rethink what they feel about others. This is a very powerful story of what being judgmental of others can cause so much hurt and misunderstanding. Both Alex and Rose will give into the passion between but not without hurt and pain for both. It is an emotional read and much heavier than the first two books. I loved revisiting some of the special couples from the other books, plus Alex’s grandmother is a peach. This is a story you will not forget and may reread again, it's so good. I would suggest you read the books in order it makes the stories better. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it. I hope you don’t miss this series it is wonderful.

The Rake and the Rose by Eva Devon

To me this is a story of pain suppressed and the energy refocused on avoiding pain in the future and in so doing preventing those in pain from enjoying life. It is a story of an almost fated love sidelined for years and almost lost for good. It is a story of the disparity between social stations, expectations of those within the various levels to behave a certain way, and the pain that often caused. It had manipulative people, caring kind people, fearful people, people who thought they knew the truth and really didn’t, and a good man that hid his goodness from others. It also had “rake” in many variations repeated over and over and the main person it was used to describe seemed almost more saintly than rakish.

I never really figured out how old Rose, Harry, and Alexander were supposed to be. Rose, at times, seemed more like she was sixteen than in her twenties but she could probably not have achieved what she had if she wasn’t older than her maturity level seemed to be. Alexander was more than he let on to others and I would have liked to see more of him in other situations. Harry was misguided and protective but did harm in his righteousness – wondering if he gets a book and who he will end up with. I felt both Harry and Rose, though from a lower social level, seemed rather priggish at times and not easy to cotton to making me wonder how they were friends with Alexander at all.

I think that the people I liked the best might have been Evelyn Turnbridge, a Cyprian, or perhaps Lily. Those two seemed to have a better handle on life than the main characters. I am guessing that Harry will have his story told next and though I can’t see him with Evelyn…it might be interesting. My questions at the end, besides the ages of the characters and the time between eviction of the Digby’s and Rose meeting up with Alexander again had to do with whether or not an heir had been born to any of the characters in the books of this series written so far.

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled-Amara for the ARC – This is my honest review.

The Rake and the Rose is the third book in the Once Upon a Wallflower series. I have read the prior books and enjoyed each one. This can be a stand-alone read. But the series is good and worth reading in its entirety.

Harry and Rose Digby grew up with a rake for a father. He died as a result of living this lifestyle. As a result, they have suffered for it. Harry has studied to be a vicar and live a life free from speculation and gossip. Rose writes pamphlets in order to help others. She also writes poetry where she exposes her heartbreak through her words. In spite of choosing to live a life where they help others, they cannot forget the past. Nor will others let them forget.

Alexander Markby, the Earl of Derby is a friend to Harry much to the annoyance of his grandmother. She remembers all too well the failings of the Digby's father. But Alexander is a good man in spite of his reputation for being a rake.

Rose wants to get the men who are rakes to change their ways because of the harm it leaves behind as a result of their selfishness. She decides to investigate the places where these men entertain themselves. But she can't get inside. So, she decides to get the one person she knows who is a rake to help her. She spies him in his carriage and lets herself in only to shock Alexander. Rose believes Alexander abandoned her when she needed a friend most. She believes she can get him to help her get in so she can expose them all in order to make a difference.

Alexander agrees with one stipulation, she must pose as his mistress. This means everything to rose, so she agrees. Rose will have to pretend to be the very thing she despises. But will she be able to follow through or will she lose her heart to the man she loves.

This was a fun and entertaining story. It is also part of a wonderful series. I really enjoy the characters. The writing is well done and draws the reader in right from the beginning.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.

I received an eARC for my honest opinion.

This is the third book of a series but can be read as a standalone, but honestly if I was you, I would read the first two then this one because they’re great books written by an amazing author.

I love that in all her books you have a strong female that is willing to do whatever is necessary to save or better her family's lives. In this book you will meet Rose Digby and she is just as determined to make sure that her family's name and the women that she is trying to save in the “lowers”. However, is not able to get entry into the club and must find a way there so she can write her story. That is where we get to meet Alexander Markby, one of her brothers’ closest friends and her childhood love but there is one thing…he is in a class a lot higher than herself, and Alex has made a promise to Rose's brother that he will not touch her.

You will go on an amazing adventure with these two. You will get to see the way that Rose sees the “underbelly” of society and how she comes to understand that it’s not all bad in the end. You will get to watch some great banter, romance blooms, hidden secrets, and possibly true love if those characters would just let everything go. My favorite character was Alex. He was so supportive, he made amends for how his father acted when they were younger, he is always trying to help the next artists have their moments of fame. His heart is huge, but he doesn’t just show that side of himself to anyone for fear that he will never be seen as good enough or worthy enough.

Rose was a little harder to like for me, I found her to be judgmental right away of everything that she doesn’t understand but I do like that she learns from her mistakes. It was her character that had the most growth in the book. So, at the end of the book, I found myself really liking her character.

I loved in this book you get to see the other couples from the previous books come back and you get to see how they all interact together and get to see more of them again.

I can’t wait to see what else this author will bring us. I love the pace of her books; I love how easy the writing is to read. I enjoy the way that this author brings the characters to life in her books. If you have not read anything from Eva Devon you’re missing out.

I want to thank Entangled Publishing and NetGally for the opportunity to review this book.

Thank you Brittany from Entangled for the eARC.

This is a fast paced romance that I would say for those looking for a short and emotional read or maybe want to try romance books because they enjoy watching Bridgerton but the books might intimidate them on starting to read romance. Something I liked most about this short story is that yes, it is part of a series, it is a standalone story. I wasn’t sure of that going into it but understood rather quickly thanks to the author's world building and providing backstory.

This journey is filled with pain and loss due to past trauma, judgment, self doubt, trust issues and overwhelming emotions focused around love. This story is written in dual point-of-views with each chapter changing between Alex and Rose for those of you who do not like books like this. These childhood friends who have fallen out are fated to meet again when Rose is on the hunt to exploit upper society and those called Rakes. Rose is headstrong and before her time for this period piece and I would venture to say along the lines of a Nancy Drew for her time. Alex is an Earl who lets anyone believe what they want about him, but he tries to help artists and be better than his father before him. He is haunted by his past and while he loves to live life, he is guarded and broken. These two battle about their wits, feelings, and past while they struggle to find happiness.

While I think this was a cute standalone story, I do wish there was more flirting and spice to it. The blurb about it seemed to at least promise eyelash batting and more of pretending to be smitten with Alex, but it felt more like Rose was just headstrong and blunt (which don’t get me wrong I greatly enjoyed) but while at the parties it would have been nice to see those interactions and promised conversations for her pamphlet.

This is Book 3 of the Once Upon a Wallflower series. I have only read Book 2 prior to this, so I missed out on the first book. Although I think it would be more enjoyable to read in order, this can certainly be read as a standalone. Rose is fed up with how rakes can do as they please without having to deal with any consequences, yet the people who fall prey to them have to suffer. She is determined to expose them for the scoundrels that they are and in order to do that, she needs to infiltrate their world. This is where Alexander comes in. He is Rose's brother's best friend and he can help her get access to his world of rogues. The only drawback is that she has to pose as his mistress in order to pull this off. But you see, Alexander is actually hiding behind the exterior of being a rake, but truly he desires someone to love and he only has eyes for Rose. Because of past grievances, Rose's brother has warned Alexander to stay away from Rose, but when she asks for his help, he can't refuse her.
Rose was a character that was a bit hard to like at first. Her opinion of Alexander and how she made him feel bad for what happened in the past, was a bit harsh, especially since the past occurrences weren't his fault. Same goes for her brother, Harry. Both were entirely too judgmental of him. Despite all that, Alexander always looked out for them and made sure they had what they needed, which was one of the reasons he was such a good hero.
The story was well-written and kept my interest till the end. The storyline flows nicely as the plot smoothly unfolds with a mixture of misunderstandings and twists along the way. An enjoyable and entertaining addition to the series!
