After hanging the Water Master out to dry, spoiler, Gero is employed as a bodyguard for the very, very anxious Ureshino, whose college life is under threat due to her pending inheritance. With Kinosaki in tow, it’s time for a camping trip that promises anything but a quiet time.

Pure, pure nonsense of the highest order. Whereas most shonen are the hot dogs of nonsense, this is possibly the filet mignon or at least a good striploin. It absolutely knows exactly how to go for it and how hard to do so.

That’s even with the back half of the story focusing largely on a mind control plot, which I typically ascribe to series in any genre having run out of other ideas. This one is so dumb and so gonzo and so clever at points that it really just works.

First, we have to finish off the water storyline, which allows for a welcome reappearance by Chompsky and some pretty decent action, even if the actual climactic moment is a bit thin. Luckily everything else carries it.

From shark-themed restaurants to an utterly pointless (yet justified somehow by the story) human zoo, there’s a delight to just turning the pages here to see where it might go next. It’s inventive and takes itself just seriously enough when it needs to (although that one guy in the tie is next level…)

As an added bonus, the women here are not around to just be a gaggle of objects or trophies for Gero to strike out with (although the way Kinosaki justifies continually adding more women is so thin even Gero notices). They actually have their own arcs and competencies.

Yeah, Himekawa might be wearing a wetsuit, but it’s a great look without being utterly preposterous AND she helps Gero get through his fight with the Water Master. They have a fun chemistry before we veer off to the next section and I hope she’ll be back in future.

This whole college scene proves to be a comedy goldmine, with Gero taking his cover as a student so seriously he turns out to be the best one in his class. The assassin this time out turns out to be the most irritating, in a good way, New Age himbo you’ve ever seen as well (I swear that’s a piano in that backpack).

Admittedly, when we first meet Uneshino she’s almost scared of her own shadow and that makes her a little hard to endure, watching her fail hard at making friends is rough, but she gets so much more interesting by the end. I’m genuinely impressed at how this one goes about turning her around.

And the way that camping trip, complete with a test of courage, turns into a non-stop booby trap of epic proportions is very satisfying. It gives lots of room for everybody to shine, has some more solid action, and then has a really effective cliffhanger that takes something that seemed like a trap and then makes it an even more elaborate trap than it seemed. I loved that.

There’s a very subversive progressive undercurrent to this that I really like too. It’s got a real equality and acceptance for a variety of gender identities that you just do not see in a lot of manga, plus it still manages to be wildly inventive and funny.

Yes, the incredible weirdness of this won’t be for everybody. This is superpowered fighting with the serial numbers filed off, to be sure, but it has a lot more pizazz than that description would suggest. That it makes even the most insane turns interesting is a definite credit to its writing.

4 stars - is this the most fun I’m having right now with a shonen title? Almost certainly. It knows how to be very dumb in a very smart way and that’s harder to do than you’d think.

VIZ Media provided an early galley for review.

A few months back, I checked out the the first volume of this manga. I am eager to see how the story continues.

The action picks right up volume 1 left off - with Gero facing off against the water master. The artwork once again conveys the energy and emotion of the dynamic encounter. But once the tide turns and the battle is over, the even more challenging navigation of the world of dating begins for Gero. And this, clearly, is the bigger of the challenges for him. Poisons and fighting for survival is what he was raised to do. Connecting with another on a personal level is a whole new world for him.

Gero's second assignment is one of protection for a young woman set to inherit a family run corporation. His skills are put to the test when another interestingly powered assassin targets her. Again, the artwork of the action scenes is very exciting. Once more, we end on a cliffhanger to be resolved in the next volume (smart planning to encourage continued reading of the series).

I like too that each chapter ends with a page from a character profile glossary. It is a quick summation of details accompanied by figure art of each character.

I really liked this volume! I love all of the action because it's so different from a regular fighting manga. Gero's nervousness to talk to people is so relatable. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here!

This was a stellar follow-up to volume one. Gero is such a wonderful character and his interactions with the different women he encounters are priceless. I'm so glad I started this series, its truly something special!

This digital ARC was obtainable via NetGalley for an honest review!

In this second volume of "Marriage Toxin" our main character has some good character development going on. He is finally able to carry on a decent conversation with women without being super awkward. I am actually convinced that Gero might find himself a wife. On the other hand, saving these women is proving to be a little bit difficult. I do have faith that Gero will continue to destroy these other masters in battle. Curious to see how the fight will carry out in volume three.

Poison Master Gero is locked in battle with a Water Master as volume 2 opens. Gero is there to rescue Himekawa, an art thief, with the assistance of marriage swindler Kinosaki in the hopes of maybe finding a wife. But Gero finds out that defeating an enemy is easier than creating a relationship that may lead to marriage so off to another job! The new job is posing as a college student while being a body guard for Shoriure Shino, the heir to a mega-corporation. The girl's aunt has plans on the company while the girl's uncle wants to follow his late brother's wishes. So will Gero and Kinosaki be able to thwart all the plans the Sound Master has carefully laid? The reader will need to tune in for volume three of Marriage Toxin to find out!

Thanks Netgalley and Viz Media for the chance to read this title!

Gero is a poison master in need of a wife so now he’s on different adventures to find one. 😂 with the help of his new friend(?), Kinosaki, he’s rescued a woman who is an art thief that steals art back for its rightful owners and he’s currently protecting an heiress with self esteem issues. The things these guys get involved with make this series fun. The fights do not make this series any less fun because they are serious but also add to the world Gero comes from. It’s also fun to see the awkward side to this assassin when it comes to women.

Marriage Toxin volume 2 continues the absurdist action comedy bonanza from the first volume. As the first story arc (if we measure them by the lead female of the storyline) wraps up, another one starts, ending this volume with a cliffhanger. I would dismiss this as absolute fluff if it weren't for the actual truth bombs they drop about human relationships amidst all the weird things going on. (I received a free ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.)

The water/shark/painting whatever arc comes to a close, and we move on to a bodyguard job helping a shy young heiress against a sound/hypnosis guy. Shy girl is adorably awkward, big fan of her. We get some cool art. But I don't know how much I buy into the sound guy and how his powers work. I guess this is the tone the series is going for with really wacky sci-fi powers? I don't hate it but I'm not in love with how it's been used here, especially towards the end.

The battle between assassins to recover a stolen painting comes to a close and Gero gets his reward: a date with Himekawa. (To be fair it was supposed to be a three person dinner, but Kinosaki strategically dips out at the last minute.)r

But this wouldn't be much of a series if he succeeded with the first girl he met, so we're on to Gero's next potential match: a socially anxious heiress with an assassin after her.

Forget that stuff, I wanna see more drama with the human zoo!

Thank you to NetGally and Viz Media for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. This series follows Poison Master Gero and marriage swindler Mei as they try to find Gero a wife so that he can further his great lineage. We follow Gero and Mei as they take on missions to show off to potential mates. Vol 2 is even more ridiculous than volume 1 and that's great.

I'm really enjoying this series! It's funny and light hearted, even though it's dealing with heavier subjects like assassinations and theft lol. This is really fun, and I'm excited to continue this series, not only to see where it's going, but also to see how this cliffhanger gets resolved!!!

Loved the continuation of the story. The artwork is still great, and the characters are fun. I like that the "romance" isn't the main part of the story. The addition of new characters with new abilities is cool and I'm excited for where the rest of the story will take us.

The gimmick of assignments to find a wife is a good one. The characters are all likeable. The scenes with absurd attitudes or foibles of some characters are also well done. There is still some curiosity about the evolution of the fight.

The last volume had my curiosity, this volume has my attention! I really like Gero's character journey, and the cast of characters surrounding this series (as well as the fight scenes) are so understandably silly and enjoyable, I can't help but root for everyone!

Ack, it ended on a cliffhanger! I like where volume 2 picked up and it kept the same rhythm and flow as volume 1. Gero is forever hilarious and I loved seeing him in the cat ears. Seeing him adapt his teachings is also hilarious because he does everything...very awkwardly.

Also, a sound master?! That's such a cool power I've never thought of. I can't wait to see them duke it out in volume three.

Thank you Viz Media and NetGalley for the ARC!
