Remind dad that he’s doing a great job (at least compared to the likes of pop culture and historical dads, like Darth Vader and Pharaoh Akhenaten) with this perfect gift for every father from the New York Times bestselling author of There Are Moms Way Worse Than You.
Following up on the success of Glenn Boozan’s viral gift book, There Are Moms Way Worse Than Irrefutable Proof that You Are Indeed a Fantastic Parent, the dad’s companion book sets out to prove to dads all over the world that, however bad they think they are at parenting, there are dads way worse. While Moms Way Worse highlighted creatures across the animal kingdom who are terrible at parenting, Dads Way Worse showcases fictional dads (and their parenting failures) across history and in popular culture. What dad would think he’s doing poorly when compared to Jack from The Shining, Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones, or…Walter White from Breaking Bad?:
It’s fine if at a barbecue, your “Grill Dad” skills are green As long as what you’re cooking isn’t methamphetamine!
Or Darth
Oops! Forgot their bathtime? Mess up a mid-day snack? Better than a cauterizing light saber attack.
The pages include plenty of Easter eggs for the true pop-culture nerds and history buffs, plus an informative and hilarious appendix that expands on the faults and foibles of the dads featured within. Boozan’s rhymed couplets, paired with Witte’s clever illustrations, make There Are Dads Way Worse Than You the perfect gift for fathers with a great sense of humor and a penchant for pop culture.
You might not make the Guinness Book for parenting the best— But even so, your kid believes you’re better than the rest.
This book was playful and fun; with clever rhymes and such a variety of characters!
It made me laugh to myself as I read it like, yeah, at least my dad isn’t/didnt _____! I’m debating whether he’d appreciate a copy but I sure appreciate mine!
Thank you so much Workman Pub and NetGalley for granting me an e-copy in exchange for my honest opinion!
An open take on being a dad and being human all at the same time. It was a great read with examples of other notable dads who came up a little short when it counted the most.
Super cute and funny book for any new or old dads.
The pictures and rhymes are hilarious and clever. Any new dad with any smidge of anxiety will be cheered by comparisons with Lord Tywin Lannister, Thanos, or Darth Vader.
I would purchase this for any new dad or any dad on Father’s Day.
Thank you NetGalley and Workman Publishing Company for providing this ARC for a review.
I bought this book as a Father's Day present for my husband. He is an absolutely stellar father, but like many dads, can be hard on himself feeling like he's messing up. He's also very into pop culture so at first glance, I thought this book was the perfect gift for him! I was doubly interested in picking it up because I read the companion book, There Are Moms Way Worse Than You, and adored it, so I was actually very happy to find a copy of this to read for myself, too!
Overall, it's a cute, funny book riddled with pop culture references, which makes it entertaining but also will make it irrelevant in the not-too-distant future. The thing that kind of bothered me about it, though, was that partway through, it switched from listing bad dads to listing bad moms. Maybe I'm being overly feminist here, but it sort of felt like it was being super gracious and forgiving to dads while shaming the moms. Not sure if the author just ran out of bad dad material or what, but it would have been nice if it had stuck to dads instead of dragging moms into it - we already have our own book, thanks!
CDP Special Edition: "There are Dads WAY Worse than You," Glenn Boozan
Not gonna count this toward my reading goal, but this little picture book was a fun little interlude. Think "Go the F--- to Sleep."
Here's my little review: Great stuff! Good to know I'm not in the bottom decile of dads, even after I yell "motherf---er" at a baseball game, even when I use the local news in place of the diapers I left home, even after I have to explain what "that's what she said" means when my wife describes a skyscraper.
A WONDERFUL Father's Day gift for the dad in your life! And he can read it with one hand in case you have a lightsaber "accident"!
These are hilarious and sweet for a great gift for any first-time parent. I would say a must for baby showers and presents for parents.
The Dads book runs through mostly movie dads/parents. Home Alone, Darth Vader, Thanos, but also historical parents like King Tut's father. At the end of the book, there is an appendix covering each dad/parents mentioned.
The Mothers book shows how awful mother are in the animal kingdom. Hamster, Dracula Ant, Panda and the like. Again, there is an appendix of each animal.
The book is also emotional and sentimental along with its humor. Just a wonderful book.
I LOVED There Are Moms Way Worse Than You, but this one completely missed the mark. The rhyming was inconsistent - I can understand 1 or 2 couplets not rhyming, but there were about half that didn't. It was very noticeable. And some of the phrases didn't make sense. Also, Boozan couldn't find enough horrible dads to fill a whole book, and had to add a few moms in. Very disappointed in this, because it could have been an awesome book.
The Moms book was kind of fun in that train wreck sort of way. This one? Not so much.
The author decided to use ‘all’ fictional fathers for the bad examples and for some reason that just didn’t hit right for me like the animal kingdom mothers did. And THEN, the author actually throws in some bad fictional mothers….in the dad book.
My wife is pregnant (and almost due) and some friends of ours sent this to me in the mail the other day. The book had me laughing the entire time I was reading it. I enjoyed the little glossary at the end that goes into further detail about the different bad dads mentioned.
Definitely a funny and thoughtful gift for a soon-to-be (or current) dad!
This was really cute! Perfect for any dad. It’s a quick read and the references are terrific! The illustrations are definitely top notch. If you don’t know the person referenced in the book, there is an index at the back.
Bought this as a Father's Day present and it was well received! Perfect for dad's who love pop culture references and have a good sense of humour - it's a super funny book with really fun references to movies, TV shows, etv.
A very quick read! A funny illustrated poem about horrible fathers. It looks custom made for the perfect Father’s Day gift. I guess as long as you don’t cut off your child’s hand, you are better than Darth Vader.
Read this with my husband and had a few good laughs. I think my favorite additions to the "bad dads" were Darth Vader (of course), Wayne Szalinski and Jack Torrence.
I really love the cover, but think that "There are Moms way worse than you" was a much more interesting read. Kudos to Glenn for the interesting words and to Priscillia Witte for the great illustrations!!!!
This book was funny. Saw it at the grocery store and had to have it. It made me laugh and this this is a great book for new days. The “fun facts” at the end were great. What a fun way to site your sources. I would definitely recommend
10 min read, but I was laughing the whole time. I was honestly expecting quite more than just the dozen examples in, but I appreciated that each had a devoted paragraph at the end of the book explains why they were bad dads and elaborate more to their story.
I bought it for my husband for Father’s Day (it’s today in South Africa). It’s pretty funny and touching towards the end. A quick, amusing read with nice illustrations. Highly recommended as a gift!
