Beginnings: Obsidian & Onyx

Rate this book
Now available together for the first time, don't miss Obsidian and Onyx, the first two books in Jennifer L. Armentrout's bestselling Lux series. Also includes bonus content exclusive to the print edition! "A thrilling ride from start to finish," says RT Book Reviews.

Obsidian
There’s an alien next door. And with his looming height and eerie green eyes, he’s hot… until he opens his mouth. He’s infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, he marks me. Turns out he has a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal his abilities and the only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to him until my alien mojo fades. If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Onyx
Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems. I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

Found me another gem amongst my books!

The book kinda reminded me of a mix of Damon Salvatore

meets Roswell

meets some evil aliens, evil people with some teenage angst 😄

There are the first two books from the series in this one book:

Obsidian & Onyx

and they are both sooooo good! I will admit though, I wanted to smack people 15 times!

I love Katy's character! She's a book blogger and made me appreciate my blog more. The author actually dedicated to book lovers and book bloggers both large and small. Yay! I don't hate mine so much any more and may spend more time over there!!

Katy loved books, obviously and she doesn't take shit off Daemon and she's just plain cool! Katy and her mom move to a small town in West Virginia. Her mom needed a change since Katy's father died a couple of years ago. She works at the hospital so Katy is left alone a lot.

Katy gets in with her next door neighbors; Daemon & Dee. They are aliens 👽 Daemon is a jerk that you love, hate and want to have sex with at any given moment. Dee is super sweet and becomes a great best friend.

Daemon is the most powerful alien of their kind on the planet. They have been here awhile and are monitored. And there are some evil aliens that came too that are always trying to kill Daemon and their race.

Daemon is a jerk to Katy most of the time but there are reasons. He's also a love interest and it makes things really hard for them both. They eventually tell Katy all about them and why they have to stay away from humans. But that doesn't happen as Dee becomes a best friend and Daemon can't stay away.

There are some major things go down and Katy is changed! I'm not saying what happened but it's totally cool. Now they have to fight the government and the evil aliens just to try to survive like normal.

I have to say that I stayed up WAY past my bedtime to finish this book. That's how much I was into it. And I don't do that often due to medical conditions

I'm just glad I loved it so much.

Happy Reading!

Mel ❤️

I bought this omnibus of books one and two at a thrift store. My friends and followers have been trying to get me to read this series for ages, although I think I've missed the bus on the book's popularity train. It peaked ages ago; now people are all about her vampire fantasy series (which I definitely did not like). The Lux series honestly isn't too bad for what it is. It's very much a paranormal YA romance cast in the mold of TWILIGHT, but the heroine has a lot more empowerment than most other female characters done in that vein. Katy is a book blogger, she stands up for herself, and she doesn't hate every female character who so much as breathes in the direction of her love interest.

This is basically TWILIGHT with aliens. The Lux are light people, the Arum are shadow people. They are at war and Katy's proximity to them ends up putting her in danger-- multiple times. Daemon, the love interest, is one of the most powerful of his kind, and after reading FOURTH WING, let me tell you that light beings kind of pale in comparison to shadow baes. Also, he's just such a raging asshole. Did I need a TWILIGHT where "Edward" constantly insults and sexually harasses "Bella" while doing a self-defensive light show? No.

Did I read it anyway? Of course I did.

If you're really into books like FALLEN, TWILIGHT, and HUSH HUSH, you will love this book. Actually, now that I'm saying this, I think Daemon has more in common with Patch than he does with Edward, so maybe that's a better comparison. I probably wouldn't recommend this series to anyone who isn't a die-hard YA paranormal fan, and honestly, the bonus scenes in this book just made me super glad that the books aren't dual POV. I probably won't read more in this series but I don't regret what I did read.

this is a repeat review
the summary
This book review is based on the series as a whole, unless stated.
Why, why Katy and Daemon are so perfect for each other (it makes me cry when I read the series)
Although they went through a series of challenges (trust issues, the DOD and so on), they remain so faithful and loyal... and that's the magic of this book
the rating
definitely a 5/5 stars!

Surprisingly this book was so amazing that this is going to be a rather short review – or not?

I now know why everyone is overly obsessed with Jennifer L. Armentrout writing because damn if all her books are like “Obsidian” & “Onyx” well I guess she’s going to make it to my favourite author list – I think she already has to be honest.

At first I thought to myself, “Oh wow okay city girl moves in small town blah blah obviously her neighbor is a sexually appealing male blah blah blah he has a paranormal aspect to him and he’s mysterious and not to mention a jerk with horrible temper and blah blah” – BUT it was so good.

IT TURNS OUT I LOVE CLICHÉ EVEN IF IT THIS TURNED OUT TO BE ORIGINAL.

This also turned out to be my first alien book and it’s weird because I hate alien movies???

It wasn’t even all “predictable,” IT WAS ACTUALLY SORT OF SUSPENSEFUL. Most times, I was flying through the pages and I was so scared to miss a single word out of the sentences I was reading.

These books made me LOL so much. I’m just casually reading and the only sounds coming from me were my giggles and gasps, I think my mom asked me over several times what the hell was so funny.

I actually love all the main characters – especially my OTP – and don’t even find them a tad annoying.

I LOVE DAEMON BLACK.

He definitely made it to my book boyfriend list and is no doubt never leaving that list.

I also liked the fact that even after he softens up towards Katy and shows his true self, he doesn’t completely change his persona. He’s funny and inappropriate throughout the whole book and ladies and gentleman this is why I am so irrevocably (pun not intended) in love with him.

I love the female protagonist; to me she is so real, relatable, and badass.

Katy’s obsession with books and blogging about them is just so completely relatable. I loved it so much. I never felt this attached to a female character – it’s most likely because we share this same passion. And all the book nerd habits were so well portrayed. It just made me so happy and proud. I also loved that she stayed committed to her books, still tried to blog, and kept her passion until the very end even when things in her life were completely out of the norm – book worthy.

The chemistry between Kat and Daemon is just so sizzling and addicting. I love all the names he calls her and how he doesn’t deny or push away the inevitable – that they’re both so completely infatuated with one and other.

These two books were so good that I don’t even have any “favorite moments,” the whole thing is one huge perfect scene. I literally already want to re-read this.

It was simply a refreshing and unique read and a page turner. This series is going to be my go to series when I’m feeling down!

Sadly, because of the cover and dumbed down blurb, I don't think I'll be buying this. Major disappointed... all those years waiting for hardback Lux and they messed it up. Not even new material will make me love this. Upset hard-core fan here

"People tend to look on the beliefs of the past as being primitive and unintelligent, yet we are seeing more truth in the past every day."

"Words were the most powerful tool. Simple and so often underestimated. They could heal. They could destroy."

I'd bought this really cool special collector's edition on amazon some time ago, where you get two books within one and I felt like reading it so, why not? The first two books of this series were so much fun!
The beginning was a little cliché (you know, pretty girl moves in new town, meeting gorgeous, devishly good- looking dude and goes all excited: "Omg, you're an alien! What can you do with those powers of yours???"), but that quickly made room for a fast-paced, hilarious and just overall enjoyable read. The characters were so well developed where you can't help but fall in love with all of them. It appears that pretty much all of our alien friends have green eyes that seem to glow in the dark and that fact alone...*needs air*

The relationship between Katy and Daemon in the first book was kind of like the warming-up phase for them I think. They were teasing each other on such an exaggerated level I was literally rolling my eyes at the book, but I guess that was just them being... well, THEM :D

In the second book however, things got really interesting between our two beloved main characters, because Daemon isn't that one-sided we all expected him to be. Where there had only been an arrogant apect to his personality, there now was this protectiveness about him that made Daemon that much more likeable to me.

I'm really curious about how this series is going to continue!

So, I've already read all of the Lux books and am just waiting on the last one. However, I bought this book because of the extras. And let me tell you, I loved them! You can never have too much of Daemon Black! This also gave me a good reason to reread the series before Opposition comes out in August. To anyone who hasn't read this series, it's a must. Armentrout's writing is amazing. And you will definitely fall head over heels with Daemon. That is all.

UPDATE: 3/24/14
That. Cover.

I love it! Even though I've read this whole series (just waiting on Opposition) I'm going to buy this. The main reason why is because we're getting TWO never before seen Daemon POVs!

Yup, it's official. I need this book.

Oh my!! I'm officially addicted to this series. I loved Daemon Black. This hot fallen alien is absolutely swoon worthy. I LOVED every minute of it!! *cries for more*

I'm freaking mesmerised! I've started this book with high expectations and things started out a little slow for me towards the beginning of the book but the story definitely picked up as I continued to read.
The tension between Daemon and Katy was incredible.

“I couldn't stop staring at his mouth when he spoke. I bet he knew how to kiss. Perfect kisses too, ones that weren't wet and gross, but the kind that curled toes.
I needed to stop looking at him in general.”

“You're kind of dirty, Kitten."
I blinked. Deny. Deny. Deny. "What did you say?”

AGHHHHHHHHH. I'm looking forward to seeing where this story will go.

It's just a combination of Obsidian and Onyx in a big book. The only thing special is the bonus materials in the end of it, which are some specific chapters transferred into Daemon's POV. Those parts were swoon-worthy and it's great to tell the story from a different angle. At least we know that Daemon wasn't such a dou***bag, or jerk-face, well, not that obvious.

To this day, I still can't control myself. DAEMON BLACK IS THE ONLY PERSON THAT IS KEEPING ME ALIVE. At least that's what my whole life at the moment feels like. Yes, I've heard that the Lux series is utterly irresistible, but who'd actually believe it until they've read it? I'm fangirling, still fangirling, and I think I need a t-shirt that simply says, "I love aliens," because Jennifer L. Armentrout is my new favourite author of 2014 and I can't simply keep my boyfriend Daemon out of my mind.

Although this mega-huge book was combined with two books, I felt like it was one adventure overall. I can imagine what the bookworms who read these when they released back in the day were dealing with--the cliffhangers Jen Armentrout creates are terribadly awesome, and you just can't seem to get enough of Daemon's sexiness.

The plot's simple, but beautiful. Katy Swartz moves to West Virginia for a new change in her and her mom's lifestyle after her father died of brain cancer a few years back in Florida. Turns out, there's an alien next door. No, not the gooey green types who fly in spaceships, but the ones that are sexy, and have amazing powers. She meets Daemon Black--a mega-hottie who is mean and cruel right away. He also has a sister named Dee, who becomes Katy's best friend right away. Katy then goes too close to information and finds out too much, where many people can be looking for her. What happens when she gets in a relationship with Daemon?

Let me tell you--sexy things. Katy and Daemon were perfect together, and I shipped them so hard. They're so alike in many ways, and the cat-fight relationship they had going on in the beginning basically brought them even closer.

That's me now--every night, day, evening, afternoon, minute, second; you get the idea. This book will leave you so heartbroken because you wish that you can have that perfect relationship that D and K have together. Their love is so strong, and worthwhile to read.

From the beginning, I was addicted to this beauty. They did take a while for me to read and complete, but they were fast-paced. Action scenes happened almost every two chapters, and the fighting was described perfectly visually for the reader. I felt like I was living in this alien world with Katy.

Speaking of Katy, I loved her. When do you read a book where the protagonist is a book blogger? Rarely, I tell you. She's your ordinary girl--lives to do vlogs and schedule Waiting on Wednesday posts. Daemon and Dee basically change her life so much and spins her around. She suddenly doesn't have time for anything after the aliens barge into her life. It's funny to read about something like that when your life may seem boring. (Which mine isn't, haha)

Now I understand what everyone was talking about. Posing beside Daemon cardboard cutouts, noting that Daemon is your boyfriend, not stop thinking about Daemon, creating Daemon gifs... YES. I am with you all crazy fangirls and there's simply no other better book boyfriend than Daemon. Sorry, Augustus and Four...

I don't want to rave too much because you guys may get sick and tired of me and then may or may not leave me. :( But, I love him.

All of the characters were a great crew together. There weren't too many of them, and they all were awesome fighters and were sarcastic and just a bunch of fluffs. :)

The sequel didn't really leave us at a cliffhanger, but I feel like I just can't seem to get enough of Daemon and Katy. So, coming from that, I'm getting ready for 3, 4, 5, and Daemon's hotness. I got steamed, but I'm ready to get burned. ;)

These two books were absolutely engaging and intriguing. I'd seriously recommend taking a few sleepy pills after finishing them, because you will be stuck thinking about what will happen next.

Review of Onyx, the second book in the Lux series. My thoughts on the first installment are.. somewhere. *distracted wave*
I wrote this on my iPad, without auto-correct, so pardon the spelling errors.

The bad:
Daemon overall. His "I'm not stalking you, I'm just keeping an eye on you" philosophy was creepy and overprotective. He got possessive of Katy if another guy so much as breathed near her.

The new guy Blake was only there to rival Daemon and occasionally silently push the plot forward. It was a very New moon, clichè move. We already have a paranormal romance without substance. You know what else this series needs? A bloody love triangle.

The book was repetitive and way too long. I felt as if I were reading the same chapter over and over again, up until the last hundred pages. Kat did something stupid and Daemon forgave her the next day. Cue makeout session (however steamy it was).
And then the vicious cycle continues. The two of them acted childish and only communicated by kissing or arguing. Hello, where are the gray areas?

Katy abandoned her role as the witty, bookloving MC and therefore more relatable MC, and became weak, insecure and frustrating. She made poor decisions, trusted the wrong people and was painfully slow with figuring out the mystery.
She was indecisive and couldn't speak up, especially in the Daemon-vs-Blake situation.
Kat refused to define the relationship with either of them and acted as if it was okay to play around with their feelings; always balancing the line between good friends and dating with both of them.

I kind of missed Kat's interest in books. I know, I know. It's tough to keep up with reading/blogging when life gets in the way. Of course, my everyday problems don't include two guys fighting over me and being chased by an alien service, so I shouldn't complain.

While reading this book, I craved the upbeat and funny tone the first installment had. The banter back and forth between the couple, the sexual tension and the minor focus on the paranormal.
The aliens are just... lame. I didn't care for their backstory amd plotline in general.

Onyx tried to be deep and sentimental, and never reached that point. Katy just thought "Oh, that's so sad", "No, that's terrible".
Those vague descriptions didn't evoke any feeling in the reader, and felt like placeholders. The more I tead from her, the more convinced I've become that Armentrout's strength is sarcastic dialogue with quick, sharp comments.

The good:
The plot thickens and is actually going somewhere. Now we have a bunch of problems, and we find out more about the aliens and their enemies.

My favorite part was when Kat filmed her In my mailbox video for her book blog and Daemon joined her. That scene was everytging I wanted, and I would've been happy to read a whole book filled with them. It was sweet, hilarious and a little romantic at the same time.
More of that, please, instead of the stalker pattern. It's not cute.
Daemon and Katy do have chemistry, and the romance was enjoyable when they weren't fighting nonstop.

Lastly - and I almost hate to admit it - these books are still ridiculously, dangerously addictive, even when I feel like throwing them out the window.

Final verdict:
A meh sequel, nothing more. It has some setup for the later books, but the rest is pointless drama and your standard PNR.

I should start by saying (as usual) this is my review of the WHOLE Lux series...

It'll be as hard as Daemon's abs not to give out any spoilers but I'll do my best! ;) *takes deep breath*

I CANT EVEN START TO EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I LOVED LUX!!!!! LIKE HOLY ALIEN BABIES EVERYWHERE MY MIND HAS BEEN BLOWN AND MY HEART HAS BEEN STOLEN BY THIS SERIES...

I had a friend who saw this book on good-reads and told me about it because lets just say I'm a little... OK maybe a lot obsessed with aliens. Well once she told me about it I looked it up and I was a little so/so about it at first bc the cover was a little too old school romance novel for me, but thank the alien gods above that i didn't let that keep me from reading it! I finished all five books in less than 3 days! Each book gets better and better. I normally find myself saying how much I like the first book more than the third or the second one didn't match up well with the last, etc. etc. This wasn't an issue with this series each book is better than the last! (opal and origin are tied for my personal favorite bc THOSE ENDING!!!!!! OMG!!!!!)

Normally when a series is this action packed it would come off as trying to hard, NOPE Jennifer armentrout made it seem effortless... These books are seriously the definition of "a page turner".
***oh and side-note: she gets sarcasm and romance on a level that a lot of ya authors just don't get... like holy hot alien scenes!!!***

These books had me laughing, crying, screaming, and wanting to flip over tables with excitement. The characters are amazing, well built, hilarious, and just over all lovely! Its been a very long time since I have been this excited about a book series. I'm 100% sure that Jennifer Armentrout wrote this book for me, I mean aliens, romance, and witty comebacks will forever be the key to my heart and Jennifer Armentrout is the key master!

I fear if I continue to talk about this serious anymore I'm going to let some secrets slip out and I would truly hate for that to happen and you not get the chance to experience all the plot twist, humor, and action that this series has to offer... So I'll round out my very ranting review by saying this,

IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE LUX SERIES RUN OUT TO THE CLOSEST BOOK STORE AND BUY THE WHOLE SERIES... NOT JUST THE FIRST ONE BUT ALL FIVE... CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULE FOR A FEW DAYS... THEN GO HOME AND LOCK YOURSELF IN A ROOM AND READ THESE BOOKS!!! you wont regret it!

I’ve heard so many great things about the Lux series for quite some time now and just knew I had to pick up the series though I must admit I was worried about it being a disappointment like some of the other hyped up books I’ve read in the past. I don’t even know why I was worried!?? It was such an amazing and loveable book! I did have some difficulties in obtaining the book in the beginning considering I couldn’t just go down to the local library and borrow the book or go down to the bookstore. Instead I had to buy the book online, and luckily mum was willing to buy online just this once from Booktopia, whilst she bought me my school textbooks for 2015. I am so blissfully thankful that I got a copy, and was so worth my money. This series is by far one of the best books that I have read in my 3 years of reading. There was never a dull moment in the series right from the beginning. Once I got sucked in, there was no turning back. I couldn’t stop myself from devouring the pages one by one, as they got better and better as the story went on. I loved how everything fit tightly together like a jigsaw puzzle. The writing style had an easy flowing pace that never dragged on and was purely an enjoyable experience.

It was a pleasant change to read a YA book about aliens rather than the usual vampire/werewolves/Nephilim/faerie, which make up most of the fantasies these days. I can’t think of many young adult books that revolve around the idea of aliens. The behind story was well thought out and original, and didn’t sound ridiculous. I loved the fact that no two Luxen had the same level of power and that they all blended into human society quite well. The chemistry in this book? On-point. There is no love at first sight.

I just absolutely fell in love with Katy’s character right from the start. She was down to earth, funny, sarcastic and full of witty remarks. She was easy to relate with her being a book blogger and all. I admired her strength and her ability to stand up for herself against someone such as Daemon Black with his infuriating, arrogant and stab-worthy personality. I didn’t know whether I should love him of hate him. He got on my nerves a few times to the point that I wanted to smack him senseless. He grew on me eventually like moss, or a skin disease. (In a nice way… if that’s possible. Reference from The Mortal Instruments) So basically watch I'm trying to say is... Watch out Jacob Black, because there's a new Black in town that's hotter than ever!

I just love this series, and the first two books that are in this volume are AWESOME. I love the way Jennifer L Armentrout writes and creates a marvelous storyline with amazing characters, and not only Daemon (*_*), Dee, Katy, even Ash are incredible.
This is the third time i'm reading it and it still bringing me so many emotions and feels.
In Obsidian and Onyx the story is light compared to the next books in the series. The relationship between katy and Daemon is so so real that is one of my favourites of all time, is quite interesting that in a young adult paranormal book the love between the main character is going slow, like a real relationship.
The thing with the aliens is fun and different and i like it very much. I just fall in love with the story every single time i re-read the books or the quotes.

Obsidian - 3.5 stars. Literally Twilight but with aliens. But man did I enjoy the crap out of it.

Onyx - 4.25 stars. Much better than the first. Action packed and full of angst.

Guys, I think I have a new obsession with a series that I never expected to like. I've never read a book that felt so much like Twilight that wasn't actually Twilight; though it does have quite of few of its own unique twists to it. I also just love Katy and the fact that she a sassy little book blogger. Daemon is a bit aggravating at times but I really like him for the most part as well.

I like the alien powers, they're interesting even if they're a little difficult for me to visualize at times. The writing honestly isn't amazing and is definitely what's keeping it from 5 stars but it is very addictive and compulsively readable.

WOW I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS <3

And can we just talk about the cover? (The new one with the first two parts together) It freaking sparkles!

This book is about Aliens or Luxens more specifically. I mean, how can you know that but not read this book? Because, seriously, let's be honest here – we all are hard-core believers that aliens do exist and in this book, that comes with an added bonus because these aliens are hot.

"You don't look like an alien!" It seemed important to point that out.
He arched a brow. "And what do aliens look like?"
"Not...not like you,' I sputtered. 'They aren't gorgeous--"
"You think I'm gorgeous?" He smiled.”

And then there's Daemon Black. Daemon Black. He's dark and mysterious and he's a jerk. But well, he's irresistible.

I also really liked Katy. She was funny and basically, wasn't a bitch – like most female protagonists are. She's a book blogger and a book lover (sense a similarity there?) so that was pretty cool because hey, I'm one too! Let's be best friends!

“Why are you such an ass?" The words came out before I could think twice.
"Everyone has to excel at something, right?"
"Well, you're doing a great job.”

All the Katy-Daemon moments were just SO adorable and I just– feeeeeeeels! Though, of course, there were times when my heart was left shattered too. *looks accusingly at chapter 26*

“The arrogant half smile I disliked so much tipped up one corner of his swollen lips. “You’re barely glowing now.”

This book had the right amount of fantasy (because believe me, there are many books that are labelled fantasy but the main focus is on the love *cough cough*), action and romance. I loved all the characters and found all of them relatable.

“I'm sure I look like a drowned cat."
"You look fine. The wet look works for you."
I scowled. "Now I know you're lying.”

Though characters like Ash and Andrew were supposed to be hateful (and I do hate them), I also understand why they act that way. There was no pointless reason why any character behaved the way they did.

I couldnt put this book down and though I was sooo busy and was reading like five books at once, I would always pick this book up when I had some free time. It's been quite a long time since I've ever loved a series this much and I'm so glad I do.

“Am I glowing?"
"Like a Christmas tree."
"Not just the star?"
The bed moved a little, and I felt his hand brush my arm. "No. You're super bright. It's kind of like looking at the sun.”

I cannot wait to read the next part, Onyx, and if you haven't read this series yet, GO AND READ IT NOW AND THEN WE'LL ALL FANGIRL ABOUT DAEMON BLACK TOGETHER!

SWEET ALIEN BABY, THIS BOOK!
(hahaha see what I did there? )

This book was a freaking emotional roller coaster. I laughed, I squealed, I fangirled, I cried. I fell in love <3

Dear Daemon fucking Black,

I don't know what to say... I just loved this book too much. The plot twists were amazing though I had my suspicions and the whole book was full of feels. One moment your heart is shattered into pieces and then another, it's pieced back together just to be broken again.

Okay, I might be going crazy.

AND OMG THE END. That– That wasn't nice.

I really, really want Opal like right now because yes, you guessed it, IT ENDS IN A CLIFFHANGER!

3.5 Stars for the first two books

I liked the first one more than the second. But it reminded me so much of Twilight that it was comical some times. These books are such a fun and fast read. I love daemon! but Katie is so naive and frustrating. The ending was really fast paced and unexpected. can't wait to read the next book.

Hate the cover! This will always be one of my favourite series of all time but what the hell. This cover will not stand out in the shelves AT ALL. I could go on and on but I won't. I definitely won't be buying this.
