One World Together

Rate this book
I want a friend but whom will I choose? Take a trip around the world, meet children from lots of different places and peek into their lives. In this delightful story about friendship across nations and cultures, one small child visits nine different countries to find a friend — and ends up being friends with ALL the children he meets. Along the way he discovers how children live in other countries and the things they enjoy doing, learning both how their lives are different and how many of the things children enjoy throughout the world are the same. The countries featured are Brazil, China, Russia, Kenya, the Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, Morocco, and the United States. The artwork and text are perfectly pitched for a very young audience, with charming, friendly illustrations and the humorous, gentle text for which this author and illustrator are renowned. The book brings the theme of cultural diversity to a younger readership in a fun and simple way while also showing that children are in many ways the same the world over.

A beautiful multi-cultural book for preschoolers about making friends, and learning about children around the world.

Children's book with a message about friendship and interculturalism. Very simple story which follows the same pattern through the book; page by page a new person with a new language and culture is introduced. In the end all the children of the world are together holding hands. I think this book might give too stereotypical picture about other cultures. Pictures were ok. I would recommend this for 3-5 year olds.

I would like this just a little bit more if it were the kid from Kenya whose mother was a doctor, and the Dutch twins who spoke of all the wonderful animals in their country, instead of the reverse.

I grabbed this book last minute instead of the one o really wanted, and it turns out it was an excellent choice. It was perfect for my boys (3&5) they loved hear hello in the different languages and seeing the similarities they had with others portrayed in the book. Their absolute favorite was the last page. They wanted to hang the book up in their room to look at.

This books is about a child from the UK who wants to make new friends, they visit other countries and explain what they found out about the different cultures they visited. At the end of the book all the children realise that they can all be friends as they are all one world. This would be a good book to use when explore different countries and cultures with children.

A sweet book which my 2yr old loves. It's a shame the map at the back isn't very good, although my little one can now point to where we live after just a couple of reads.

I read the book "One World Together" By Catherine Anholt. This picture book is for children ages 5 and up. The book is about a boy who wants a friend but doesn't know which one to choose. The little boy in the story is telling us all about his friends that he meets from all around the world, and on the page it also tells a fact or something about that country. For example, his one friend was from Brazil, and on the page it talked about how everyone in Brazil loves to play football. Lastly, the book celebrates friendships from around the world, and after all we are all one world together. I gave the book a 5 out of 5 because I just thought it was very effective in so many ways, and it's a really good book to use when teaching young children. First off the illustrations in the book were very realistic and it almost seemed like you were there in the country with them. I thought the theme was very good because it's about diversity in the world and how many people can have friends from all around the world in different places. Also, children deal with diversity every day, whether it's in school or outside of school, and the book kind of lets you know that knowing/having friends from other cultures/countries is okay. The language of this book would be good for the age group. Also, for language throughout the book they show/tell you the way that that culture says "hello" in their language. Lastly,I would definitely use this book when teaching little kids because not only was it so realistic looking, but also it teaches you how different countries say hello. Lastly, kids can learn things about the country too because like I mentioned earlier, the book would give a fact or two about the countries the boy talked about.

A friendly and well-traveled young boy, the narrator imagines meeting children from various countries and getting to know a little bit about them and their homes. For instance, he learns the word they use to greet someone, where they live or play or what they like to do. I liked that he visited some countries usually not featured in these sorts of books, including Brazil, Morocco, Kenya, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The watercolor illustrations show happy, welcoming children and snippets of their lives, and the final fold-up illustration lets readers know that there is no need to choose just one friend from a world filled with friends. This book is ideal for teaching community to young readers and reminding them of our commonalities and differences.
