First story in the Justifiable Cause series

Hard-driving attorney Jo Pomeroy is as determined as she is sexy—in other words, a major pain in NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend’s butt. Working together on a high-profile task force charged with busting sales of counterfeit goods has been rocky from the start. And Jo’s penchant for trouble is as difficult to ignore as her spectacular legs.

The world of knock-offs isn’t as frivolous as it appears. The purses are fake, but the danger is all too real—and Jo seems hell-bent on putting herself in the middle of it. Her investigations have uncovered valuable leads for Gabe’s team, but they’ve also drawn the wrong kind of attention.

Now, she’s on the radar of a mysterious smuggler not afraid to use violence to evade the law. At the risk of their lives—and their hearts—Gabe and Jo must find him before he finds them.

I actually enjoyed this book, which was good. It was such a last-minute read, as I was reading it for a challenge, and I kind of didn't care what I thought of it, but as I was reading I got invested. I was really frustrated when I also like how I would have read the last 2, but they're not free like the first one, and as they're only 100 pages I'm not spending $4 on them. Not worth it.

I enjoyed this story - a suspenseful romance. Joanna and Gabe are running a task force to clean up counterfeit products in New York. It has interesting characters and looks at an area of crime that I don't know much about. There is a lot of tension, drama and danger in this story. I wish it had been longer. The tension, drama and suspense only last for a few paragraphs at a time. It could have been so much more. The ending is an ending but very abrupt.

Gabe and Joanna are on a task force to track down counterfeit merchandise for one of Jo’s clients (she is an attorney). They are both determined, driven, and want things to run their way. Problem is, neither of them will back down. The story was very interesting to me because it isn’t a common plot that I have run across, so I was engrossed in the story from the beginning. When you throw in two strong personalities, a few bad guys and a lot of great dialogue between the main characters, you have an entertaining story that is hard to put down.

Gabe is referred to by Jo as “Mr. August” – the hottest month on the calendar. She and him have such intense chemistry but neither wants to act on because it could put an end to their spot on the task force. They try to ignore it but eventually give in. After they realize how good they can be together they try to maintain business as usual when they are on the job. Easier said than done. In one scene, when Gabe has to save Jo’s life he lets his emotions get the best of him by going after one of the people he felt was responsible.

Jo is a tough attorney and this task force means everything to her. The mayor of New York is trusting her with this and she hopes if she does well in New York, it will go national. She takes it very seriously and the excitement of tracking down a smuggler often leads to lack of good judgment on her part and she finds herself in situations in which Gabe has to step in and save her. Neither of them like that – Jo because she wants to take care of herself and Gabe because he doesn’t want her interfering in police work or worse, hurt.

Adrienne does a really good job of setting up this series. I look forward to reading more about Gabe and Jo and watching them navigate this relationship of theirs while they try to bring down the one of the biggest smuggling operations of counterfeit merchandise in New York. I highly recommend The Chase to anyone looking for a fun, witty, romantic suspense read!

This is book one of a three part series that is full of action, a few chills and some downright horrors. Here we meet attorney Joanna and Sergeant Townsend who keep us entertained throughout as they team together on the mayor's special task force to stop illegal counterfeit fashion that is taking over the city. What do you get when you have two strong willed people that are attracted to each other but seem only to be able to irritate the other as they buttheads? You get one highly entertaining read that keeps the reads smiling and at times laughing as they go head to head to chase down counterfeiters only to be found on the receiving end of danger. Jo demands to be on all the busts, the hunt and the catcher only to find the counterfeits have her in their sites leaving Gabe pulling his hair out and talking to his self. Gabe has never met a woman more frustrating or more sexy that is slowing driving him to drink. As the author spends us through the twists and turns, the hunt is on bring more danger than Joanna ever expected. With Gabe hot on her tail trying his best to keep his eyes off her sexy backside and out of danger. This is one strong, sassy, sexy bullheaded woman who will not listen to reason. Joanna doesn’t understand why one sexy bullheaded sergeant won’t listen to reason and is always trying to keep her away from the thrilling excitement that comes with each bust. That is until the day she gets in over her head and leaves her at deaths door.

This is a very exciting read that hooks you from start to finish leaving you breathless as you go through the paces of each new exciting, thrilling road block that is put before them. The Chase is a very well written story leaving the read on the edge as they dance around each other bulling, yelling, cursing, and demanding what they expect from the other. The author knows how to spin her words to keep you hooked and entertained why she keeps you smiling, laughing and gasping at the new twist she spins. You have to smile as these two try their best to keep their hands among other things off each other. Trying to keep their thoughts and minds on the case and off the thought of what they liked to do to the other. You do not want to miss this start of a new exciting thrilling suspense read. You might want to pick up the box-set since this is just the start and does leave you guessing as to what is yet to come. It is well worth the read. I can’t wait to start on the next book.

This book was okay. I felt like the characters were very very unlikeable. The male lead, Gabriel, only had two important thoughts I'm his mind: sex and violence. I know he doesn't really mean it when he says he wants to kill the female lead, Jo, but I felt like it's borderline scary for these thoughts to be running on his mind! For instance, there was a scene where he was holding a gun and he had to hand it to his supervisor for fear of using it on Jo. Uhm.. Okay? The author also never failed to point out that Gabe is known to always yell and raise his voice, especially when dealing with Jo. However, there were indeed some parts where Gabe was sweet and worrying of Jo, which shows that he just cares. But I felt like the author emphasized so much on Gabe's tendency to be full of anger, to the point of tarnishing whatever good his character stands for.

The female lead, Jo, was downright annoying. She seemed so immature to me and she cannot follow orders. I know she's passionate at what she does but I can't help thinking how someone can be so stubborn. She didn't seem like she was a 33 y/o adult with the way she handled things (although she did redeem herself towards the end). The chemistry between Jo and Gabe was average. I never found myself swooning over their story, which was weird because romance was a huge aspect in the story. The ending was a huge letdown because the author didn't even finish the book! She didn't wrap things up with this case, which is a bummer. I was hoping maybe for the second book, there will be a new case altogether after the author had wrapped up this story. But, nope. There was literally no closure in this book. I will probably not read the second book because this novel just didn't do it for me.

In The Chase by Adrienne Giordano, two strong characters and some great action kept me intrigued and turning the pages!

Gabe is a police sergeant, Jo is a lawyer. Together they are working on a counterfeit task force that is starting to become very dangerous. As the heat between Jo and Gabe escalates, so does the danger. Gabe is determined to keep Jo safe, and Jo is just as determined to be very involved in the investigation. Will they get the job done safely? If they do, what can come of their feelings for each other, and the passion between them?

I loved the passion between Jo and Gabe! There is not only great chemistry between them, there is tension and conflict and it all works well together. Jo and Gabe felt real, and their interactions were realistic to their circumstances. They are both strong, determined, and dedicated to their jobs. I couldn't wait to see if they'd be as dedicated to each other! The play between them was perfect for this plot!

I enjoyed the suspenseful part of the plot. It is a unique story line, and the action and danger are woven well with a romance. I felt like it all blended together for a great read.

I'd recommend this well paced book to any romantic suspense reader! I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, The Evasion.

I really liked this one! Adored the characters. The snarky banter between Jo and Gabe was hilarious and so perfectly what you would expect from these two career driven people at the top of their game. You could feel the sexual tension between them but working together on a task force keeps them from acting on the attraction....for a while. This had a great story with Jo and Gabe tracking illegal knockoffs and getting them off the streets as well as trying to find the supplier of the knockoffs. One warning though, this isn't the whole story. While it doesn't have any huge cliffhanger, the story is continued in the next book.

I definitely recommend this one.

I'm reading this as part of the Mirth, Murder & Mystery series. We start off with Gabe, an obviously horny guy who makes all sorts of internal comments about Jo’s appearance and what he would like to do. Then, after the meeting, when they are alone in his car, her internal dialogue starts up about wanting to see him without a shirt.

Why is it so important to be in the shop so fast during a warrant search that Jo can’t wait for the go ahead. She’s supposed to be smart. Wow! After a huge seizure or counterfeit goods, the mayor names the people responsible in his press release. Does he want to get them killed?

In between the hot sex, Jo and Gabe are constantly mad and yelling at each other because Jo (who feels Gabe is her intellectual equal) hasn’t got the sense of a Gad Fly. And then there is dear Gabe who says it isn’t just about the sex (yeah, right).

This is the first book in the series and is fast-paced and full of action, suspense and heated attraction.
Attorney Jo and Sgt. Gabe are both driven, stubborn, and control freaks, which mean they spar and butt heads frequently as they work together on a task force designed to shut down a gang that hustles high-end counterfeit goods. The job is dangerous, and when alpha-male Gabe admits he worries about his sexy colleague getting hurt, things change between them. Jo's impatience results in an injury, Gabe puts her in her place, but it's too late. Her cover is blown and she now has the attention of a smuggler who is more than willing to cut Jo out of the picture for good.

Loved this story and the chemistry between the two main characters. Highly recommend.

So much fun! Finally, I got the chance to read about Jo and Gabe before they were (technically) "Jo and Gabe"! :) Snappy dialogue, fantastic chemistry (as a bonus in this one, it's a forbidden work romance, and they're still fighting it!), and a fast-paced story all add up to an explosive series start. I was glad that this one was novella-length, because I had a lot to do this week and I didn't want to stop reading once I'd started! The shorter length totally worked here, and since I was reading the box set, I didn't have to wait to find out what the next phase of their brand-new non-work relationship would bring.

The Chase has everything a good romantic suspense story needs--and you won't be able to stop with just one of this series! ;)

The characters had too much sex on their minds. I read mysteries for the puzzles and if there is a little sex, ok, but this is all about the sexual chemistry between the 2 and not any mystery. Happily, it was a quick read.

My 4.5 review from www.GuiltyPleasuresbookreviews.com

I got hooked on Adrienne Giordano's books back in the summer; I was looking for something different and came across a publisher's ad on Face book for her latest in her Private Protectors series. I requested the whole series to review and was so happy I did as I "discovered" yet another author who writes romantic suspense with a lot of heat. In The Chase, Adrienne turns the heat up about a thousand degrees without sacrificing any of the suspense you've come to expect from her stories.

I don't know where to begin with our heroine, Jo Pomeroy. She's a tough intellectual property attorney in New York City and is serving on a task force to put the suppliers and sellers of counterfeit goods out of business. She has some high profile clients and she aims to please. She's without question; smart, tough, brash, funny, and sexy as hell. She also aims to drive her task force partner, Sergeant Gabe Townsend right up the wall. Gabe is without a doubt swoon worthy but in addition to being hot, he's got a good head on his shoulders, he's thoughtful, caring, and professional until he's around Jo and then all bets are off. I love that he's not afraid of this ultra strong woman, her alpha tendencies don't turn him off if anything it turns him on.

I flat out loved these characters from the moment they stepped on the page until the last line. Their banter is some of the best foreplay ever written and when they do finally cross that professional line it was undeniably hot. What I've always loved about Adrienne's books though is the thorough plot lines and this novella is no different. My one complaint, this book leave us hanging...we get a glimpse of where they are headed but it's basically a "to be continued" and that drives me nuts! However, if this book is an example of what is to come with this series then I'm apt to be forgiving.

The Chase is a great start to what appears to be another very promising series by Adrienne Giordano. It has everything it takes to be a successful romantic suspense; a hot as hell male lead, strong but feminine female lead, great supporting characters, a superior plot line, witty and engaging dialog, and a simmering heat that will have you screaming for more!

The Chase by Adrienne Giordano (Justifiable Cause Book 1)

Part 1 of 3. A romantic suspense novella. A dangerous attraction between a cop and lawyer that work together. If they try for a relationship, it could impact their careers.
She's a bit ballsy and hard headed. He's a bit crass.

I'm a little mixed on this one. It's a fast moving adventure novella and I enjoyed the beginning of a sparing relationship between the hero and heroine. It could conceivably be consider a relationship beginning. And it's not really a cliff hanger, but the story and events did not wrap up. I like a book to be contained and complete on its own.
So while I did enjoy the story, know that it's not really complete by itself. I have all three parts to read which I confess, makes this more a chapter for me and not the full story.

Excerpt:
“From the second he’d met her, she had, in equal parts, infuriated and enthralled him.
That first day, he’d nearly pissed himself. She’d marched into the mayor’s office wearing her fancy spiked heels and a suit just tight enough to let a man’s imagination run more than a little wild, and immediately Gabe started conjuring sexual positions he’d like to test with her.
Then she’d opened her mouth.
And hadn’t shut up since.
He’d say this for Jo Pomeroy: the woman knew how to get shit done. Her long legs, nice rack and shoulder-length blond hair were a bonus.”

Jo Pomeroy is an intellectual property attorney, and she has been working closely with Sergeant Gabe Townsend on Operation Clean Sweep, trying to rid New York City of counterfeiting, Jo’s clients would like to see end. Gabe and Jo are both ambitious, strong-willed, and alphas: they work well together, but they get royally get on each other’s nerves. And the sexual tension simmering between them doesn’t help! But Jo is reckless and her determination to find the smugglers endangers them both.

While Jo and Gabe start off butting heads, they end up butting more than that! THE CHASE is fast-paced, and I love how I got to experience NYC police work, and Gabe’s rough day-to-day profession. The characters are well defined, the story interesting because the subjects were thoroughly researched by the author. Not everyone will agree with me here, but I found Gabe’s sexual obsession with Jo, especially at the beginning, a bit tiring; I would have preferred to dive right in the suspense part and experience fewer remarks on Jo’s legs and (fake) boobs; but this is a quirk of mine. But when the story really takes off, it’s great! It was nice to see a strong woman not become a dishrag when faced with the likes of “Mr. August” (Gabe, who is rather hot!). Although THE CHASE is part one in the Justifiable Cause series, it does not end on a cliffhanger that will make you angry!

Jo Pomeroy is an attorney who is working with a task force to stop knock-offs. These counterfeit goods are hurting reputable companies. Gabe Townsend is an NYPD Sergeant who is carrying out the raids. These two may be on the same side but the butt heads regularly. Both are stubborn and determined. Will they ever play nice? Jo is such a feisty woman. I admired her. She finds Gabe sexy and trusts him, but she won't let him push her around. Gabe is attracted to Jo. He wants to keep her safe. How can he get her to realize that she's putting herself in danger? It was enjoyable to watch these two bicker and it was even more fun to see them become lovers. I liked these two. These characters are interesting and they won't back down. New York City with its high energy is the perfect setting for this suspenseful novel. The action is non-stop and the unexpected twists add to the highly intriguing story. I was hooked, but be aware that this is part one of a series. The ending leaves the reader with unanswered questions. I'm looking forward to the next book. I want to see how Jo and Gabe deal with their relationship and the kingpin behind the knock-offs.

The story of busting counterfeit goods is good, fast paced, adrenalin fueled and packed with danger. Jo and Gabe are both Alpha individuals and even though Jo knows that the danger is real she rushed headlong into the fray anyway with little regard for her own safety, the only thing she thinks about is getting justice for her clients. As a lawyer she goes undercover to buy knock off goods, but when her safety is jepordised she still refuses to back down. She is part of a task force in New York to break these rings and to find out who is in charge of bringing counterfeit goods into the country.

Gabe has his hands full with not only being in charge of the task force to bust the counterfeit rings but to keep Jo out of harms way, and she doesn't make thing easy for him.

I loved the banter between Jo and Gabe, two strong willed people, both unwilling to bend. I did find Gabe to be a bit caveman like about Jo but the sparks flew hot and heavy between them from the get go.

Can't wait to see what's in store next for these two.

A hot cop and a sexy lawyer exploding with sexual tension in this first installment of the Justifiable Cause series!

Sergeant Gabe Townsend with the Emergency Services Unit of the NYPD is on a task force, Operation Clean Sweep, targeting the string of counterfeit goods running through the city. Fellow member Jo Pomeroy is driving him crazy. Jo is a feisty intellectual property attorney and is out to stop these thieves from ripping off her mega-corporation clients. High end hand bags, watches, shoes, etc. are being made into cheap knock-offs and diluting the brand names. Jo is aiming to have this task force go to the national level, and not shy about risking her neck to do it!

Attraction and sexual tension has been building between Gabe and Jo for months, but when Jo starts gaining the attention of the criminals and starts getting injured and receiving threats, Gabe can no longer ignore his feelings for her. He steps in to protect her, and their passion ignites.

The Chase by Adrienne Giordano is the first book in her Justifiable Cause series and was a fascinating book for me to read.

Both Jo Pomeroy and Sergeant Gabe Townsend are strong and complex characters. The plot of the book centers around a Clean Sweep campaign that Jo heads in New York City to stop copyright infringement for her highend clients. In other words, to stop counterfeit goods from being sold on the streets. I didn't know anything about this topic so I found it very interesting. There is action, danger, lots of banter and hot romance as Jo and Gabe finally give into their attraction. I loved the fact that Jo and Gabe had gotten to know each other during their work together and that they "tried" to think things through before they took the next step in their relationship.

All in all an enjoyable read and I already have the next two books in the series wating on my Kindle.

Jo Pomeroy is determined to get her clients justice, by making sure every knock-off item is off the streets, even if that means dealing with NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend. Jo and Gabe have become unlikely partners, in the murderous crime world of counterfeit fashion. Will Gabe be able to keep them safe and put the bad guys behind bars or will Jo get caught in the crossfire?

The Chase is the first part of the Justifiable Cause series. There is some saucy talk, but no spicy scenes. The narration is a bit wordy and there are a few typos. However, the suspense is intense! This is a great set-up to a promising series. There are excellent action scenes and readers will be excited to keep turning the page, to see what would happen next. The cliffhanger ending will have readers gasping for air as they reach for the next book.

This is the first of the three part Justifiable Cause series. We are introduced to hard driven Jo Pomeroy and NYPD Sergeant Gabe Townsend who serve on the mayor's special task force to stop the illegal sale and smuggling of counterfeit designer knock-offs in the city. These two strong-willed people have been secretly attracted to each other even though they constantly butt heads and generally irritate each other for the last 10 months! As they close in on a major contributor to the illegal counterfeit goods flooding the city, the danger increases and Jo constantly puts herself in harm's way, this exasperating Gabe to no end. As their frustration with each other escalates, so does their desire for each other until they are consumed and can no longer fight it. I can't wait for the second book in this series to see what happens next in their relationship! Loved every minute!!

This was a truly fun read from beginning to end. Every time I had to set my Kindle down to do something else, I couldn't wait to get back to it. The plot wasn't exactly unusual. Nor was the banter, bickering, and barely controlled rage that simmered between the main characters. But the author did a fabulous job with those two characters, and that's what really moved the story along. Not to mention the out-of-control lust between them - a relationship that could ruin both of their careers if anyone suspected. But, of course, everyone suspected. My only complaint is we never find out who the severed hand belonged to. Sending someone a severed hand is a step beyond smuggling designer knock-offs, and yet that part of the story was just dropped. Regardless, this author's got real talent and I look forward to reading more by her.

3/3.5*

The Chase is a quick, fast-paced read about Sergeant Gabe Townsend and attorney Joanna "Jo" Pomeroy. Together, Jo and Gabe work to remove counterfeit goods from NYC streets. Both Gabe and Jo are strong-willed alphas who argue even better than their task force works. In The Chase, you get great banter with the action-packed story.

For me, The Chase started off on the wrong foot for me. Gabe's thoughts regarding Jo were almost perverted considering he is a respected 33 year old Sergeant. Once Gabe and Jo admitted their feelings towards each other, they seemed to act their age and the story was smoother for me. The Chase ended on a high note for me and I'm excited to read the other stories.
