Anders Knutas #4

Killer's Art

Rate this book
A cold Sunday morning, a man is found murdered and hanged on the old city wall that surrounds Visby, capital of Gotland. The victim is art gallery owner Egon Wallin. When the famous painting “The Dying Dandy” is stolen in Stockholm, disturbing links to the murder of Egon Wallin slowly start to surface, taking the reader right into the exquisite Swedish art world and underworld of prostitution and drugs.
Killer’s Art is set in the picturesque yet uncanny island Gotland, the Swedish equivalent to Martha’s Vineyard. In this hair-raising story, superintendant Anders Knutas is facing one of the toughest investigations in his career.
With an intelligent plot and fast-paced, excruciating suspense, Mari Jungstedt is often compared to Minette Walters and Ruth Rendell. Her page-turning novels have made Jungstedt the second bestselling crime-in-translation author for Random House. With over 3 million copies sold, Jungstedt is a true queen of crime fiction.

**NO SPOILERS**

Is it even possible for a murderer to do anything in Gotland without bloody Johan and Emma being central in the last dramatic chapters? Easy read, passes time, but I borrow these at the library. I would never spend money on them.

Popular and successful art-gallery proprietor Egon Wallin is discovered hanging twenty feet up in a medieval gateway in the old city of Visby, on the Swedish island of Gotland. Homicide detective Anders Knutas and his team surge into the investigation and soon start unraveling the secrets of Wallin's life -- notably that, though married to a woman, he was unknown to her promiscuously gay. There are further deaths, a child abduction and an extremely curious art theft before the mystery is finally solved.

This is the first of the Anders Knutas novels that I've read, and my guess is it'll be the last. It's a perfectly serviceable police procedural, but for some reason it just didn't grab me; life wasn't helped by the fact that most of the characters existed just as names to me. I was never tempted to give up on reading it -- it's sufficiently entertaining that it kept my interest -- but at the same time it was never much of a wrench when I had to put it down.

I think the judgement of the book, for me, is that having read it I find I don't have much to say about it.

With all the hype about Scandinavian literature, crime stories in particular, it's impossible to get only the good ones. God, I was so bored with this one.

To be honest I'm not a big fan of Scandinavian stories because I have no idea how to pronounce most of the names and it bothers me a lot. I can't focus on the story while trying out different approaches to, say, a Swedish road name. Does it sound more German or should it go with English? What does that funny letter sound like? And so I read the same sentence over and over again figuring out the pronunciation that doesn't matter anyway, because I don't read aloud.

Right. Back on the track.

I didn't like this book because there was little action, no deduction, and absolutely no time frames. So very tiring for the reader!

For being one of "the best" Swedish murder writers still living, this wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be. Same ho-hum plot, terrible dialogue, but the scenery descriptions were incredible. It was a good waste of time for an airport read, and I didn't feel badly about leaving it on the plane for someone else to read as I disembarked. It is not a book (and apparently not an author) I would recommend to someone who is a murder mystery fan. Of course, that may be unfair as I'm not exactly sure I'm a murder mystery fan at all. I like some of them, but too many that I've read (including this one) seem somewhat shoddy when compared to other books I enjoy.

Definitely one of my favourite books of the series so far. This book has a complex plot and includes a lot of information on modern Swedish art. I love the fact that these days I can google and check the paintings which adds to my appreciation of the story. Since reading the first book, I have wanted to visit Visby, but have now added Stockholm to my list. This series definitely benefits from being read in order as there are quite a few back story lines at play.

Addictive & absorbing: the Anders Knutas Crime thrillers are a must read:
The Anders Knutas Series, written by Mari Jungstedt and translated from the Swedish to English by Tiina Nunnally, is an addictive nine-book series for reader who are captivated, like me, with Crime Mysteries and Thrillers.
My review is of the entire series, which I have just newly finished. From "Unseen", the first novel in the series, to "The Fourth Victim", the ninth novel, each boast superb plots, twists and turns and fabulously intriguing characters. I have no intention of summarising each book's plot: they each contain a brief summary inside the fly cover. Personally I avoid reading the summary, as I feel it gives too much away about the content of the novel. Other readers might find the summary useful. The publishers clearly think so.
The strength of the series is such that no one book is better than another: they are each a brilliant and totally absorbing read. As with other Swedish writers of this genre the novels are so distinctively different from English and American novels of the same ilk.
The series is based on the picturesque island of Gotland, Sweden's largest island and the annual summer influx of masses of tourists makes for an interesting setting. The capital of Gotland is Visby, which possesses an excellently preserved medieval wall, as well as most of the Island's native population (and crime). It is around Visby that the novels are largely centred. The author, Mari Jungstedt, makes full use of the Island's variable geography, rural economy and proximity to other Baltic counties in the books. The Island's very changeable seasonal weather is also used by the author to good effect from novel to novel.
The characters are very much three-dimensional, as are their lives and relationships with one another. These relationships can become complex at times which only adds spice to the stories.
There are four main characters: Chief Superintendent Anders Knutas (or "Knutie" as he is affectionately known to some, much to his annoyance); Karin Jacobsson (Knutas's Deputy); Johan Berg (Regional TV Reporter for Swedish TV) and Pia, Johan's very ambitious photographer, who will stop at nothing to get the best photo or film footage.
The novels can be read independently, as they each contain sufficient information about earlier events, to prevent the reader from getting lost. However, in my view, they are best read in sequence to fully grasp the development of both characters and relationships.
The variety and originality of the plots (and sub-plots) makes this one of the best crime series written by a Swedish author. Let's face it, the Swedes boast an abundance of literary talent in this field, and Mari Jungstedt is at the very top of the crop of their talented authors.
Buy a copy of "Unseen" and start reading. I fell for Jungstedt's easy flowing distinctive narrative from the start and then ploughed my way through all, currently translated, books in the series.
Unfortunately the books aren't cheap to buy (not at the date of this review anyway), either in paperback or Kindle, which is a pity since it makes them less affordable and hence accessible to all readers. I was lucky, as my local library had every book available to read in electronic form via Borrowbox.
But even at the prices quoted on Amazon you are guaranteed novels of quality. And, as Amazon point out, the price is set by the publisher, not Amazon themselves.
A treat to read, each novel is fully deserving of the Five Star rating I have given them. I am certain that you will agree.

Men hvem kom manden i forkøbet?

Jungstedt was relatively new to me and I enjoyed most of this novel, her fifth. She has some strange little stylistic glitches that don’t matter in the long run but if she was being carefully edited they would not occur. She has a large cast and generally handles them well, but Anders Knutas, the lead detective, is a bit of a cipher. He is happily married, we are told, to Lina and has grown children with whom he more or less gets along, but he has a peculiar obsession with DI Karin Jacobsson and we are not sure where it should be going. The murder is unusual and parts of it are eventually explained: an art dealer is found hanging from the Dalman Gate in the ring wall in Visby, the main town in Gotland, a Martha’s Vineyard type of island off the coast of Sweden. Knutas immediately begins to investigate, though he is short-staffed so has to do most of the work himself. He is eventually aided by a most unusual source: a TV reporter named Johan Berg. He is trying to get a permanent agreement to live together with his girlfriend, Emma, who is reluctant for unclear reasons. They have already had a child together, Lina, who figures more prominently late in the plot. That incident is one of the puzzling aspects of the novel. Jungstedt sets it up as a particularly dark turn in the plot but nothing really happens and the plot element is finished. Very little tension develops at all and there is little or no justification for the action that puts Elin in jeopardy. The novel also becomes one about the gay life in Sweden, particularly among the art crowd. Everybody male seems to be sleeping with everybody else who is male. Along the way there are several suspects who seem likely and eventually Knutas centers in on one and justice is done. The quirkiness of some of the novel keeps it interesting though puzzling. I have already started another Jungstedt and will be eager to see if the strangeness continues. It could develop into something charming; right now, it’s merely puzzling.

DEN DÖENDE DANDYN

------

😍

Quite the dramatic murder. An art gallery dealer is found hung from Dalman Gate, an entry to the city of Visby. He did not hang himself.

The police are intent on keeping details quiet for a while, but the enterprising duo of Pia Lilja, photographer, and Johan Berg, journalist, manage to ferret out the identity of the victim and take photographs. Berg has worked with superintendant Knutas before, even helping him solve a crime, and therefore Knutas tends to cut him some slack.

Egon Wallin is well-liked. It is difficult to find anyone who can point to any reason he would be murdered. But as the investigation continues, interesting tidbits turn up. Johan takes on some investigating of his own, further endangering his fragile relationship with Emma, with whom he has had a child.

The art world in Visby and beyond becomes clearer and various suspects arise. We are given a peek into the murderer's thoughts from time to time, but never his or her identity. It is only after both Knutas and Berg put together what they have learned that they discover who it is. The search is not without peril. Can Johan and Emma stay together?
