When Mari accidentally overhears that Trystan is in love, she can't believe it. He's pining over some girl that doesn't know he's alive. The confident swagger and endless stream of girls is a facade. It conceals his loneliness and hides how messed up he's really become trying to flee from a life that's battered him to his core.
Trystan tries to figure out how to make it clear how much he loves Mari, but every insincere kiss and every broken promise haunts him, because she knows them all. Now, Trystan has to prove to the one girl he's actually fallen in love with that she's not just another conquest.
Mari has no idea who Trystan loves, but she can tell that whoever it is has captured his heart entirely. Soon Mari sees the man behind the mask, the guy that Trystan tries so hard to hide. Everything about him is appealing, and too hard to resist.
In a moment of desperation, Trystan uploads a love song he wrote for Mari, but before he can show it to her, the video goes viral. Everyone wants to know who he is, and the only thing shielding him is an anonymous account name and some thick shadows hiding his face. Tyrstan realizes that the consequences of revealing his identity will be disastrous. Everything he's tried so hard to hide will be exposed. It's a secret that is impossible to keep and the only girl who he wanted to hear it will never believe him.
H.M. Ward continues to reign as a NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author who surpassed more than 23 million books sold, placing her among the literary titans. Ward has been featured in articles in the NEW YORK TIMES, FORBES, and USA TODAY to name a few.
If you're looking for a fast-paced, entertaining read, this might be a good choice for you. I listened to the Audible version and finished in about 2 1/2 hrs. The narration was great and held my attention, beginning to end. The characters were compelling and the storyline tugged at my heart.
Trystan is the cool guy. A year ahead of Mari in school, and in an entirely different league. He's popular and he has no qualms about bedding every willing female at their high school...at least, until Mari catches his eye.
Mari is sweet, innocent and completely smitten with her older classmate, Trystan. She knows that Trystan would never be interested in a girl like her and wants to avoid the hurt she knows would result from any tryst they might have. She doesn't believe in having meaningless sexual encounters. He's never known anything else.
As the two teenagers secretly pine for one another, they are obstinately refuse to discuss their feelings. So many times I just shook my head and sighed, wondering when somebody was going to address the elephant in the room. Then, when everything is finally out in the open, the "end of the world" teenage angst comes full-force. Cue the crying and eye rolls.
Aside from the last few minutes, I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the series. I'll probably continue the series, but am hoping I don't get sucked into another never-ending series, like 'The Arrangement'. I like the characters and the story is entertaining, but I don't want to have to commit to 10 or more books to find out what happens. Hopefully, this won't be the case with the Trystan Scott series.
col-lide: to come together with a solid or direct impact.
Collide is the first story I’ve read by H.M. Ward, and definitely won’t be my last. This was another case of cover love that hooked me into reading this story, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. This is a YA contemporary romance from an author who is likely best know for her YA PNR. This is Vol. 1 in The Secret Life of Trystan Scott. And H.M. Ward is an evil woman for splitting this story up in to multiple volumes. ;)
Trystan Scott has a few secrets, from his home life to the girl he’s fallen in love with. He doesn't believe in love, that is until it happened to him.
"But there’s no such thing as love. Love’s a concoction of the Hallmark Channel.” My mouth fell open as he said it, but he didn’t stop. “At least I thought there was no such thing. Now I’m not so sure."
Mari has been assigned to helping Trystan with his lines for the past 2 years. Trystan, the guy that all the girls swoon over, and all the guys want to be. And now Trystan is "in love" and Mari is is very curious about the girl who has gotten to Trystan like this. But Mari is finding herself falling for the guy who likes to kiss the girls, the one who likes to love them and leave them. As Mari falls she has no idea that she is the object of Trystan's affection.
He wanted to kiss her. He wanted to taste her. He wanted to learn the curves of her mouth and feel her kiss him back. And not because she was rehearsing some lines from a play. He wanted her to kiss him back because she wanted to, because she felt something for him.
This was a really sweet story, and I enjoyed the characters who were well developed for a short story. Trystan is so much more than he appears to be on the surface, he's lovable and damaged, and trying to survive the bad hand he was dealt. Mari is sweet, and likable, I do wish I knew a little more about her. This story is told in alternating POV's. Mari is told in the 1st person, and Trystan is told in the 3rd person. I am looking forward to the next volume in The Secret Life of Trystan Scott! I'm also looking forward to reading more from H.M. Ward who also writes saucy adult contemporary as Ella Steele.
Okay, so here's the deal. Ward is a gifted writer, and I love her concept with this series. However, I made the mistake of reading the first two books only to find out that the fourth book is only 67 pages long but costs the same amount of money. I'm sorry, but three dollars is too much for 67 pages; at least, it is in my book. Nevertheless, I will leave a review.
This was a relatively good book, but I had read Ward's DAMAGED novel before reading this one, and the writing was more developed in that one. But, this wasn't a real issue for me.
I will say, it took me longer to get into the story than I would have expected, mostly because of the first few chapters. While the whole novel is told with a split first-person POV, a bunch of the chapters are retellings. That is to say, one chapter is given in Mari's point of view; then, the next chapter is the same scene from Trystan's point of view. The split first-person POV is not my favorite, but I found it surprisingly effective in this case. Also, I'm not a fan of the "retelling" style; however, because it was done scene by scene--as opposed to book by book--I didn't mind it so much. It just took some time to get used to.
Also, I ended up laughing at myself at one point. It took me until Chapter 10 to realize this was set in high school. I had assumed it was college, which made for some confusing points in the first few chapters. I thought my assumption was funny.
I really did like this story and would definitely recommend it, especially to younger readers who aren't ready for the full on adult-contemporary novel.
3.5 Stars Okay this is really hard to rate cause it is basically just part 1 of the story and ends in the middle of it. I was a bit weirded out by how the book switched from first person pov to third person pov with the chapters. That was really hard to get into and also a bit confusing. Also I can't say much to the characters cause I just need more time/ storyline to judge them.
3.5* (Love that cover!) Soo short, I didn't want it to end!! Especially when it just starts to get really interesting. Really want to read the next one! October seems so far away now ..
OMG. When I read the last page, I actually turned over my Kindle looking for more. THIS WAS SO GOOD! Trystan Scott is perfect: hot, damaged, and totally in love. It's tragic and romantic. I can't wait to see what happens next! I blew through this book in about 3 hours. I want the next one NOW. This is a series I'm gonna stalk. Totally. Read it. You'll love it.
Ugh!!!
Amazing! This isn't like the books I typically read but it's one of the newest from one of my favorite authors so I decided to give it a go. I was drawn in from the beginning and couldn't put this book down! There were no wild action scenes but instead a wonderfully woven story about two high school teenagers with secrets that they're afraid to share and only with a selected few. Throughout the book you can see multiple scenes shared from both Trystan and Mari's points of view so we know their secrets and how they feel towards each other. Sadly, Mari is torn throughout the story, fighting her conflicting feelings for Trystan. She starts out with the belief that she's the only girl in school who doesn't swoon at the sight of him because she sees him as one of those hit-it and quit-it type of guys. He takes what he wants then moves on to the next poor sucker while Mari believes in true love and is afraid of getting burned again, giving others the idea that she's a virgin and a prude. Pretty typical scenario right? Well, we also find out that Trystan is a victim of abuse at the hands of his father, a secret that nobody else knows. Mari knows that the mighty Trystan has finally fallen for somebody but she doesn't realize that it's her, all the while pushing him to tell this mystery girl how he feels. In the end Mari seems to have overcome her inhibitions and she's going to tell Trystan that she's in love with him at the risk of having her heart torn out when she stumbles onto another of his secrets and that's where we're left hanging. I can not wait for the next book in the series! I have to see if Mari tells Trystan she loves him and how he will react in light of this newest revelation. This book is a whirlwind of emotions that I think most people can identify with. I want Mari to share her love with Trystan and help him overcome the secrets of his past, in each other finding strength. The kiss/almost kiss scenes are electrically charged and perfectly drawn out leaving me breathless. While they continue falling for each other, I was falling for them both. To be able to induce these kinds of rolling emotions in a reader is the mark of a fantastic writer. I feel not only connected with both characters but that they are a part of me. This review was really hard to write because all I can keep thinking is WOW!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Brief summary Mari has been friends with Trystan since she started prepping him for school plays in 9th grade. She knows he's a player, but she's still drawn to him. Trystan is in love with Mari. She has no idea and he doesn't know how to tell her so he writes a song and anonymously posts it on youtube, where it goes viral. Mari connects with the song and wishes (like everyone else she knows) that she knew who wrote it.
What I liked This was a cute and quick read. I felt for, and connected with, both Mari and Trystan. I kind of wanted to hit Trystan though. Gah! Just tell her you love her already! Lol :)
What I didn't like You'd think that Mari would be able to figure out that the person Trystan is in love with is her. He gives soooo many hints and she's still kind of clueless.
Brief thoughts The story moves along nicely and ends with you wanting the next one in your hands immediately. This is a nice book to pass a few hours with. I'll be reading Backdraft as soon as I'm done with this review :)
I really enjoyed this YA Romance by H.M. Ward. It had some romance, dealt with raw, emotional issues and drew me into the character from very early on. Collide is told in altering points of view, switching between Trystan and Mari which worked really well. As the reader I knew they had similar feelings for each other but both had their reasons for not pushing forward with those feelings. It helped me to relate to the characters and their storyline.
I fell in love with Trystan's character right away. He has swagger, a little bit of an edge that made him the type of swoon-worthy guy we all fall in love with. He comes off as a womanizing, trouble-maker but what others do not see is the incredibly talented musician who has gone through some very tough times at home. I couldn't help but feel for him; he has so much potential and raw talent but very few people in his life to nurture it.
Mari is different from other girls. She isn't part of the Let's-Follow-Trystan-Around Club and she sees a side of him that few get to see when she is helping him with his lines for the school play. Mari is more reserved than Trystan. She lives a life on the straight and narrow but she doesn't seem to be quite the good two shoes that Trystan thinks she is! Mari came off as a genuinely caring person and I think she is exactly what Trystan needs in his life after everything he has been through.
The more I got to know these two, the more I was convinced that they were perfect for each other. For some reason, bad boys were made to be tamed by good girls and good girls were made to tame bad boys. Trystan needs someone who sees him as more than a sexy accessory and Mari is the one girl who sees him as more than a sexy bed mate. There are so many walls that have to come down to make this happen and I am hoping the hammer is swinging in volume two!
Since The Secret Life of Trystan Scott is broken into volumes, each book will probably end with a bit of a cliffhanger (H.M. Ward writes as Ella Steele also and this is how the Secrets Series has been). I will say that this particular book ended just as things were getting good, I mean REAL good! It had come to a climax and I was getting so excited because something BIG was about to happen and then it was OVER! Don't get me wrong, it builds up anticipation for the next book but I would so love to devour this as one book rather than volumes. I want more, more, more and I want it now!
To put my rating into perspective, I read Collide after all 16 books in the Arrangement series. I was royally ticked off and disappointed with the last book (16) in The Arrangement series and just wanted to redeem Holly in my eyes.
Enter the Trystan book...
This book is very cute but, it's honestly too juvenile for my liking, especially after Sean and Avery...but then again, this was written a couple of years back so I'm not going to be too harsh on it.
I like Trystan and I love Mari...they are so cute together and the story is nicely written which got me reading some more ( I should state here that I've already abandoned 3 other books because the writing was ridiculous!)
My main issue is with the 2 POV which I'm hoping Holly has improved on by now. Mari's POV is written in first person which I like, I feel connected to her. Trystan's POV is written in second person which I hate...it feels like somebody else looking into his life and trying to explain it to me! If an author is going to give different POV's which I totally prefer by the way...then at least keep the style consistent. Also, please make the storyline move along...I mean the same scene explained in the 2 different ways is still the same scene!
Other than the above, the book is cute. I will keep reading the series.
Well, not THE end of the review, but still. Mari is a teen girl in high school. Trystan is a senior, soon to graduate. The main conflict is romance. Trystan Scott is in love with a girl who doesn't know he's alive. Collide takes place in a high school, so you can imagine it's chaos.
Mari. Took me a few tries to be able to pronouce her name right. :P I thought she was great. I liked her very, very much. I like her attitude, the way she acts, and her best friend Katie. :D Especially the nicknames they give out. Hahaha! :D
Trystan. What do I think of him? I think he's cool. He's funny and it was fun to read about him. I won't tell you why though, because that will give out major spoilers.
I don't usually read romance. They usually make me gag(*cough* *cough* Vampire romances stink. Thankfully, this one had no vampires *cough!*), but this one was great. Probably because it had awesome characters, a cool plot, and some AWESOME nicknames. Hahahaha! :D:D:D:D:D:D The ending was great. Did you know this book is the first in a series? I had absolutely no clue. Great start, I must have the next before I go crazy.
And, O.M.G. I. Freaking. LOVE. THE COVER! :D:D:D:D:D:D
Collide was the first book i read by H.M Ward. she had been recommened to me by a friend so i thought i'd read her newist book so i could under stand what all my friends were going on about, i am So glad i did as it was Amazing.
Just a Short Review as havent got much time!
*********REVIEW CONTAINS LOTS AND LOTS OF SPOILERS********
The book focuses on a girl called Mari and a Boy called Trystan. They both go to the same school are friends. Trystan's Family life isn’t great with an alcoholic had who abuses him. The book shows the classic, friends but both want more situations. But H.M ward mixes it up adding a song which Trystan uploads to YouTube anonymously which makes his song and the account "Day" a viral sensation. Everyone hears about it including Mari. She becomes hypnotised with the song and wishes she knew who he was. Mari and Trystan both work on a play, Trystan being the main lead with one of his ex girlfriends’ brie. In one of my favourite scenes in the book Trystan does something to brie to get himself into trouble which results into him being alone in a locked cupboard with Mari. In the last scene, it ends with a cliff hanger so be warned.
Meet Trystan. He is the confident & cocky boy on campus. But there is one girl that he can't seem to get to notice him. Mari has known Trystan for years - she has been forced to help him run his lines for school plays and she has had to watch as the girls at school swoon at his feet. These two know plenty about each other - but both fail to see how they truly feel about one another.
We get to see the hard life that Trystan has endured and a hidden talent that might just be his key to escape his life.
This was a short serial by H.M. Ward that follows Trystan and Mari though the start of their relationship - their hidden secrets of home life. A YA read that was cute and gave you enough to hang onto to keep you interested in reading the rest of this story develop.
Handsome Trystan Scott is every girl's fantasy lover at this high school, and he appears to have slept with quite a few of them. Mari Jennings is a virgin and is one of those with a crush on Trystan.
The English teacher puts them together, alone, in the basement, to go over Trystan's lines for a play. They do this every day.
Why is the English teacher wasting so much time on a play that is better suited to after school. The English Teacher, Mr. Tucker, should be preparing the students for their SAT's and university. Perhaps reviewing classical books, any number of things that would be more advantageous to the future of these youths.
Mari's father is a physician. He went to Yale and has extremely high hopes that Mari will go there, too. So, what we can conclude that this is a school that has at least some students on the university track. Trystan comes from a broken home. We are not given any information about what happened to his mother, but his father blames him and takes his loss out on his son and beer and hard liquor. There is often NO FOOD in the house to eat. The cafeteria lady slips him a little free or reduced price food for lunch. After school he works at a deli mainly for food and a bit of cash. He spent his money on an acoustic guitar, a used one, but he puts a heartfelt song out on UTUBE that goes viral. Everyone want to know who the writer and singer of the song is.
The rest of the "volume" is full of angst as they try to tell each other how they feel.
Didn't relate to this It felt like the plot was all over the place
The only good thing was I finally read this book... been on my shelf for way too long! Anyway, I didn't like the romance or the book premise. Her arrangement series is much better than this :/
I am really enjoying the Ferro family. I've already read the Arrangement 1 through 14 and Damaged 1 and 2. I recently discovered that this series is a part of a reading order for the Ferro family, so of course I had to jump in here. What an amazing beginning to Tristan's story. I've been curious about him for a while, this was a series I had seen for a while and I had wanted to look into it. I didn't read the synopsis and I have no idea what to expect but so far this first episode is very entertaining. I don't want to put the book down and of course I'm jumping right into book 2. I've already got little tiny glimpses and hints in the arrangement series and I can't wait to see how they fit into these next five books. Especially since I know where the couple ends up in the future, at least part way. This was an entertaining beginning and I can't wait to see what happens next. This is so exciting, I'm just enjoying myself. I hope you do too.
So I'm attempting to read the Ferro Books in the order the author recommended. It is an extremely difficult task. What I can tell you is that Arrangement, Damaged & Proposition really meld together so well. It is a juicy tale of drama that is fun to read. Stripped is a part of the books but not tied in a lot, just minimally, but you need to read them. The Trystan Scott series books 1-5 really don't connect all that much except to give Trystan's character a back story. It is not super important to the Ferro's but they were a fun read and entertaining. They enhance his character but not completely necessary. I recommend them but if you are time crunched you're good. The Scandalous books are pointless. One person in our book club read them and they had NOTHING to do with the Ferro's. Finally the Wedding Contract, although it is about Nick Ferro it really doesn't tie into the Ferro's story. It is a breakaway book that if it wasn't Nick Ferro would just be a great story. So again if you are time crunched it is not a necessary book. So far reading them in order is difficult but entertaining.
I was lucky to get an ARC of this one! Collide is a novella that follows Mari and Trystan's story. I was so surprised by Collide. I read this novella in about three hours. I was sucked in quickly and devoured it. It isn't your typical young hot man meets girl and they are instantly infatuated and sex crazed. Mari and Trystan have been friends for a couple years. Mari helping Trystan run lines for a play. Trystan seems like your typical hot guy but, he has a few big secrets.
The novella switches back and forth between Mari and Trystan's point of view, which I love. You really get to see what each of them is thinking in the situations. Mari and Trystan both put up a strong front but, inside are broken. They have had a rough past. Trystan especially, I felt so bad for him. My heart ached for him. Mari was a lot like me in high school. A shy girl who believes in love. I completely agree on her point of view about kissing. They both have secrets and issues in their lives. Can they be over come? Will love win?
I really enjoyed Trystan and Mari. Their best friends I wanted to just slap. I was like, "don't listen to them!!!" Seth seems to me like the more typical version of high school senior. A hormone crazed guy if you will. In his own twisted way he was looking out for his friend the same way Katie did for Mari. In more of a guy way.
H.M. Ward keeps knocking them out of the park. The way Collide ends will leave you begging for more! I have to know what's going to happen with these two. It was so well written. You will enjoy this if you are a fan of H.M. Ward and I would highly recommend it. Collide will be out in paperback later this week. The next volume is due out around October 1st.
I hate serial novels, as a general rule, and probably won't start any more of them after this one (hint hint, authors!!!!) but this was an exception.
I am in love with Trystan Scott. What a great, complex character. He reminded me of Jordan Catalano (My So Called Life), except hotter and kinder. The relationship between the hero and heroine was also very well-done. I thought the author did a good job showing how each of them repressed their feelings and had no clue how the other felt. I thought the play within a play element was also well done. Trystan's emo song was incredibly cheesy, but because the story was so well done, I was willing to go along with all the cheesiness. I also like how the author is taking her time to build up the sexual tension instead of having them go at it like rabbits from the beginning. I just finished the second book, and all they've done so far is kiss. Taking things slow like this really builds up the energy, so that when they finally consummate their relationship it is going to be super satisfying -- or so I hope! I really sympathized with Trystan. He is the victim of truly horrible abuse, yet he is too proud to seek help -- frustrating, but also in keeping with his secretly noble character. Also of note is Trystan's best friend/ antagonist. An interesting, unlikeable character. I am trying to puzzle him out. Is he secretly in love with Trystan but unable to deal with it? I hope he doesn't hurt the heroine! And I hope the father gets his comeuppance!
I adore HM Ward. I adore this book. I adore Mari. I adore Trystan and I adore this word 'adore' :p
The book is told with the perspective views of both the leads. They were some awesome moments between the two. *sighs* Both the leads are very strong characters. Just read the book. As I will spill the whole story. ;)
I liked the way the book began (it was so different than the other books with a similar story where a hot guy falls for a girl who is oblivious to his charms) and ended (too quickly :( but the ending was just- argh, I want more.)
I read this book in one sitting, it was that good and fresh.
Our author has a different writing style for every book she writes (at least, I find it so), which is just awesome and makes me love her more. (:
The cover is freaking fantastic. I just want to read the next volume now.
Collide was really good!! I found some of the 2 povs a little repetitive which is why it has a 4 instead of 5 star rating, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. And what makes it even more exciting is book 2 came out a couple days ago so I can read it right away! Especially since it left me hanging.
This book is about Trystan and Mari and their secret crushes on each other. Both think the other one is out of reach and will never be able to be together like they each yearn for. Trystan has a few shockers and heartbreakers revealed about his life, which makes you really feel for the characters. And he is an anonymous, mysterious internet singing sensation that everyone wants to know.
I highly recommend H.M. Ward's books, though beware some are for older teens or adults.
Ok, so i was a little hesitant to read this book at first (don't know why) but i am soooo glad that did, and now i want MORE!!!....TRYSTAN SCOTT is one hot babe and H.M. Ward cannot be more on the money!!!!!.....Trystan's POV were the ones i looked the most forward to and he did not disappoint!!!!...I am so glad for e-books a book like this one makes them worth not being able to hold them.....Just the context is great. Although i wouldn't mind having me a piece of Trystan!!!!LOL...Thanks for this series H.M. Ward!!!!.....I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!OCT LOOKS WAY TOO LONG TO WAIT!!!LOL
This was an awesome YA Romance. My daughter absolutely loved it! Be forewarned, it's a series, and the ending will leave you turning the page looking for what happens next.
For slightly older readers, you may get the same feeling you get after reading Catcher in the Rye. You'll be able to tell that it's not aimed squarely at you, but odds are you'll enjoy nonetheless.
Yes I subjected myself to another Holly Ward serial, but the last in the series is out soon so it will only be a short torment. This is book 1 and I already love the characters, this centres around high school which is different from other HM Ward books I have read and I cannot wait to see where this is going.
The story was nice and sweet. It kinda pissed me that each time the PoV switched between Mari and Trystan we'd get a total rehash of the same thing again. The writing was a but choppy was it was nice and sweet and promising for the next installment. Which I haz.
