The Good Sadist

Rate this book
When a dominant, young gay couple meets a beautiful college muscleboy and masochist, erotic cruelty takes center stage. But when submission begins to involve its own sadistic role, surprises ensue in The Good Sadist, the first in a series of fictional works, inspired in part by real events.

Although this book contains elements of romance, it is less a romance than a chronicle, a journal, of a young man’s expedition into masochism and sadism for the love of the man he has chosen as his master.

This is serious shit.

No rating, as this wasn't the book for me.

To summarize the book, let me quote one MC:

This is serious shit. Listen to me: you . . . are going . . . to torture him. Nonstop. For at least twenty-four hours - and, even then, it doesn't end until the host of the event decides he's had enough. This is brutal. It's sadistic. It's full-duration punishment . . . safewords don't apply.

Squarely gay erotica, not m/m romance. Ignore the blurb where it says there are elelements of romance. There are not. There might be the word 'love' once in a while (as in, I love how you suffer for me when I torture you), but there is zero romance.

This is torture porn. Not sweet, sugary, delicious torture porn like Tribute. Just torture. I mean, if you like torture with zero romance, this would be a great book. It's not super-well written (sample line: "the magnificent vascular organ glistened with Derek's ejaculate"), but the descriptions of torture are very well thought-out. Very complex. Lingering. Each beating and electrocution goes on for pages and pages and pages.

Confession: I skimmed a lot of the book looking for the plot, but that was before I understood the nature of the book: there is no plot. Torture at a sex party, torture on a boat, torture at a house (very early-morning torture: if I was a sadist I'd be a late-night, takeaway pad thai, kind of sadist, not a 6.15am forced-run and aerobics sadist), torture at a punishment session.

Even though I like some sexual violence (yes, I'm a little bit screwed up) I didn't enjoy this at all, because there's no respite from the torture. There's no pausing. No coming back down before building up to a new peak. The whole book is just one enormous scene. This means it lacks any impact (no pun intended) after the first few pages. There is no emotional or psychological connection between anyone.

But, if you like hearing about exactly where and how often on the human body a tawse/strap/crop lands, read on my friend.

(Oh, BTW, not physically possible. You can't do that to people and have them functioning the next day, let alone begging for more.)

So, does what it says on the tin. Everyone in this book is good at torturing people.

This is one of the most erotic books of its kind I've yet read. It contains many heavy (albeit unrealistic) whipping and torture scenes, so it's obviously for a very specific audience. Yes, there are some problems with the writing (the author's use of the word 'muscular' ad nauseam, an extremely thin plot, a few places where the character's names are mixed up, etc.) that bothered me a bit, but all was easily forgiven in the heat of the moment. And what heat! These aren't some casual, vaguely described, S/M scenes we're talking about here. They're comprised of in your face, ongoing details, which is what makes this book sizzle where most others fail. I'm craving another book from this author. Come on now, Harrison.

My impression from the sample...

Hard core, brutal, no safeword (makes me uncomfortable), lacks romance, needs editing.

This is a hot and heavy S/M story that packs quite a punch. These guys are hardcore in the scene. They have their own club and adhere to strict rules, eve though it may not seem so at first glance. I don't know how realistic it is that someone can handle that much pain and torture for such long periods of time and still manage to function, but it made for a somewhat intense read.

I wish there was a bit more focus on the relationships involved. Hunter and Conner were already in a relationship when they meet Derek, but Conner is not present until the very end.

There were some editing issues, and by the last scene, I thought the S/M was getting a bit repetitive. I was riveted and wanted to learn more about these guys. I really feel I did not get enough information to form any real connections with any of the characters. I would love to read about some of the other guys and to see how these three are making out.

I appreciate a genuine sadist as much as the next masochist but this is not the story for me. The characters are little more than cardboard cutouts and I'm 100% uncomfortable with the level of torture attained here. I don't like that a "safeword" was considered failure by Hunter or any of the other doms and it seems everything Derek went through was sexual perversion...but not teamed with any of the emotional or mental benefits of the lifestyle. I would run the other way before submitting to any of the people described in this book. Derek could have benefited through being pushed into subspace and finding his limits rather than getting the crap beat out of him just to see what it takes to break him. at least Derek seems to get a little depth when the roles are reversed and he has to punish someone but that's all I can say.

it may be your thing. isn't mine.
also....could benefit from an editor.

Stories with this degree of sadism always turns me inside out. I found the story had me both aroused and disturbed. While I understand the great pleasure that can be found in suffering pain for another's pleasure, the (unbelievable) amount of pain/abuse the main character, Derek endures over the course of the story made me cringe. I read the story trying to keep and open mind but struggled to grasp how that kind of extreme suffering/torture can equate love and pleasure. That being said - I liked the book- I just can't tell you exactly why.

This is not a story for the faint of heart, but a hot fantasy for SM guys. The author says at the beginning of the story that it is based on facts, but how much is this true? There are several scenes that are not very realistic. But overall, I liked this story.
