Through works like TRANSMETROPOLITAN, PLANETARY, and THE AUTHORITY, Warren Ellis has changed the history of comic books. In this book, Kevin Thurman and Julian Darius examine Ellis’s body of work, exploring (among other topics) how his early work for Marvel Comics prefigures the concerns of his later work, how his super-heroes respond to comics history, his use of religion, his use of violence, his fascination with lizards (and what they reveal about the human condition), and how his characters often use anger as a stimulus for revolutionary social action, in defiance of the West’s 21st-century malaise. Topical interviews with Ellis complement several essays, expanding the reader’s understanding of the themes in Ellis’s work.
Kevin Thurman is a writer living in the suburbs of Chicago. Born and raised in Texas, he found his way to Chicago after attending college in both Sitka, Alaska and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
After receiving a Bachelors in philosophy and getting married in 2009, Kevin began writing full time. It was around this time that he was hooked up with Sequart Research and Literacy Organization.
He is also the marketing director and writer at Sequart as well as publishing start up Martian Lit.
A fascinating analysis of Warren Ellis's comic works, from the most popular to the more obscure, enriched by interviews with the author. I did not agree with all of author Kevin Thurman's interpretations, but they are always well-reasoned and entertainingly presented. Thoughtful and thought-provoking. Recommended.
Just absolutely the best read I have had all year!! If you love Warren Ellis and you have a fondness and gratitude for comic books this is a MUST READ! I couldn't put it down!!
An intelligent collection of essays as well as a few interviews, this book takes Warren Ellis very seriously, and its writers want you to, too. As literary criticism, many of the pieces are a little light, but these are definitely more than a comic fan's reviews.
