"He was the monster no one thought to look for in the light of day. It was a common mistake. People often believed they were safer in the light, thinking monsters only came out at night."
"I am going to sell you as a pleasure slave to a man I despise."
"You're entire life is going to change. You should try to accept that, because there's no possible way to avoid it. Like it or not, fight it or don't, your old life is over."
"He was my tormentor and my solace; the creator of the dark and the light within."
"Caleb was a strange person, cruel and inhuman; a monster, but at other times, he seemed so capable of something like caring. He made me cry and scream and shake with fear, and nearly a split second later he could make me almost believe he wasn't responsible for any of it."
I NEED ANSWERS!!!
She was the instrument of his revenge,
His way of reaching his mark.
His Kitten,
His captive in the dark.
He was my tormentor and my solace, the creator of the dark and the light within.
I needed to get out of here before I lost my mind.
I let him. I was always seeking shelter in the people who hurt me the most. My mother. My father. Caleb. Like a battered dog begging for love from a malicious master. It was all I knew.
"Whatever your little school-girl brain told you about men is absurdly wrong. This isn't a romance. You're not a damsel in distress and I'm not the handsome prince come to rescue you."
Captive in the Dark was interesting in parts and the author clearly did her homework on abduction and slavery. What I ask myself is if this story was compelling enough to remember in a week's time and the answer would be a strong NO.
Perhaps if I'd read this when it was released initially, I'd have been blown away; however, having read so many Dark/Captive/Forbidden stories, this seems pretty tame. Entertaining, yes, but still quite mild in its execution. I loved Livvie/Kitten though, such a feisty character and I'm certain Caleb's story will be a tear-jerker once it's revealed in full.
Did I enjoy it? Yes, but some parts dragged and some parts -maybe 20%- could have been shaved off completely and it wouldn't have made an impact on the story. Nonetheless, CJ Roberts writes fluidly and if her other books are ever listed on Kindle Unlimited, I won't hesitate to one-click.
