Betrayal.

He was the deception waiting in the night; the truth I never saw coming. After a lifetime of manipulation, I finally learned the truth. I was his puppet—even if I never saw my strings.

Even knowing how deep his betrayal runs, I can’t shake the undeniable connection between Gray and I—the way a single glance from him sets my soul on fire. We are not the same. We’re enemies, poised to battle for the future of the very thing I’d wanted to destroy.

With the Covenant gone, the revenge I thought I wanted is no longer my priority. The witches that remain played no role in my aunt’s death, and the only person standing in the way of righting those wrongs is the very man determined to keep me in his bed.

But the remaining members of the Coven will never forgive me for the role I played in their demise and subjugation, and the worst part of all is that I can’t even blame them for it. I’d been naive, believing my own delusions of grandeur when destiny clearly had other plans for me. Plans that had been set in motion centuries before my birth.

But even that had been a lie, and now it is my duty to do everything in my power to undo it.

To protect my Coven from my husband’s hatred—no matter what the cost.

Tamlin in a different font. A worse font.

Despite liking the first book, this one wasn't for me. I was borderline uncomfortable tbh.. It was one of those - she says no but her body says yes. But 10 times worse. It's safe to say I didn't want them to end up together. I would've been happy if he died.

*sigh of disappointment* This book lacked what the first book excelled in… the entertainment factor. Neither of these books are fabulously written, but I hold the first book close to my heart and adore it because it was so entertaining, keeping me at the edge of my seat the entire book. This book however… for a little over the first 50% nothing happened besides Willow hating Gray, trying to run or “fight” him, and then fucking. The ending was then rushed and ends in a fucking cliffhanger, even tho this is the end of this duet with no mention of a new series coming from this ending.

I additionally thought the acceptance of Gray from Willow, and her “choosing him always”, kind of came out of nowhere and was also very rushed. There was no development of a healthy relationship and forgiveness over the entirety of the book like I feel there should have been. It was kind of like a switch flipped and she would always choose him..??

This book was a hot mess.

I will honest here, I didn't know what the fuck was going on in this book, we went from Gray being the baddie to God and his Angels as being the enemy. This was thrown in to the mix 3/4 of the way through the book...

When it ended, I was left hella confused. The epilogue wasn't even about Gray and Willow.

Willow did a complete 180 toward the end of this on her feelings and stance on Gray. She spent 99% of this book despising Gray and was out to kill him and send him back to "from whence he came". In that last 1% of the book, she changed her mind and decided that he did give her the choice to choose and her mind was made up, she would have the daughter that was prophesied and she would fight God and his army.

As I said, I was confused and was beginning to think I had picked up another book.

The writing was sloppy - there was clearly no proofreading done here and there was a rush job on the ending.

I think this book had potential and it was wasted for whatever the hell this mess was.

I have been critical before of Adelaide's work before, but this one took the biscuit.

"Nothing here has any value without you. You're my home."

man idk what's up with the new releases of sequels this year being not as good as the first book so far for me😭 but uh well let's just say despite the fact that I literally started this in the morning and devoured it within the same day (which I havent done in SO long) I expected a lot more from this book. and truly there was just SO MUCH lost potential and missed opportunities it's quite insane???

yes this book was very good at having that addicting feeling to it but there were a lot of faults I found while reading that were too hard to ignore.

1) it was obvious this book was badly in need of edits because the way this felt so messy in not only some of the writing but also with lack of explanations and the way certain things felt all over the place??? especially at the end...

2) considering book 1 ended with having just met the archdemons youd think book 2 would be filled with so much more abt them right??? BUT NO??? why were there barely any interactions with them and to get to know the archdemons like seriously😭😭 and there was so much of telling rather than showing like why was I kept being told that one of the archdemons was like a brother to the MC and yet where was that???? I kid you not they only interacted 2 or 3 times in the book.... and one of those interactions was so golden but ofc that was never expanded on more after the beginning😐 missed opportunity!!

3) if I ever see another poorly explained world itd be all too soon🤨 this was more character driven yes but it also felt like the MC was just going in circles doing idk??? there were sweet moments btwn gray and willow but idk I didnt really care so much for them because it got way too repetitive and their romance felt really shallow 😭 also this book *definitely* lived up to being a dark romance in this book ahahahalfbdkdhdjeks and that's all I'll say (altho nowhere near as detestable as nocticadia💀)

anyways! having said all of this there really was this feeling that had me unable to put the book down so ig theres that??? Also with that epilogue and end I can see two different spin offs happening in this world (especially with that epilogue no way could there not be another book) and theres still a lot of unanswered questions and problems that need to be resolved so! maybe I might continue the series although it isnt an absolute need🤔

_____________

i made the mistake of reading the first two chapters sneak peak of this and HAHAHAHA if you thought the cliffhanger in book 1 was bad this is SO MUCH WORSE.

august 23rd needs to come ASAP i wont survive😭

spoiler alert: this was not good.

I spent so much of this book rolling my eyes that I'm pretty sure my vision is permanently compromised.

This was unfortunately such a mess to read; it was non compelling, insubstantial, and so freaking frustrating.

I really hated FMC's vendetta against Gray juxtaposed with all the hatefucking, her friendships with her "best friends" are shallow at best, and there was zero romance.

I did enjoy the displays of power at times, but other than that, meh.

This book was meaningless.

80% - was about anger banging
5% - was about Willow saying she doesn't love Gray
5% - was about Gray saying she DOES
8% - some random plot and even more RANDOM fights...
2% - some random hints about possible "pair" in next books

The only thing cursed is my eyeballs. The phrase “meat suit” should be illegal.

The biggest plot mistake, among many, was not using every character as a sacrifice because they’re all annoying.

This book has spice to the point of torture. Male dominance. He does what he wanted. He wanted a play thing. He said he loved her and care for her. She said no more but he kept going.

She said she hates him but her body can't resist him. She craves for his touch as much as he craves for hers. But she has the right to be mad at him for all the manipulation he did and the betrayal he caused.

I was excited when Ivan showed up in the story and competed to win Willow, a competition he promised to play to win from book 1. But his character changed after the kiss. I was a bit disappointed.

Willow and Lucifer's relationship is toxic. They really don't understand love. But makes sense, since Willow has the mistreatment from her dad and Lucifer's with his dad..

The magic was good.. raising the dead and lots of blood..

It's a new read for me because I haven't read this type of books before. I like the narrator for Lucifer.

Thank you Brambleromance for the opportunity to read and review. I listened to an audiobook via Libby App.

4.25⭐️ fuck me up this was so good, no one is ready for it. LITERALLY WHAT THE FUCK FIVE MINUTES INTO READING.

I adore Willow and Gray so much. Back to enemies. He brings her comfort and she hates it and I love it. Thrive on it. Gray, Lucifer the fucking Morningstar, is the epitome of the villain. He is the most villainous character I have ever met. And he gets. the. fucking. girl. As he should 👏🏼 because they are destined.

He flat out says he’s not jealous, but possessive over what is his. I die. Delicious. He loves her so deeply. I mean it’s literally embedded, carved, scarred into their skin. But fuck. It’s so good. God the way he loves. He would do anything for her to choose him. Except let her go. Like it’s the one thing in his entire, immeasurable existence that he cannot fathom. She is his everything. He marked her, claimed her, waited decades for her. Fuck. She would sacrifice everything she had for the greater good. For the coven. For her people. She would sacrifice herself. And literally no one cares. But he would sacrifice anything for her. Himself included. Because he is nothing without her at his side. I mean seriously this was giving severe Feysand vibes. I said what I said.

The dialogue is just so damn good. Everything was. The way the plot continued was stunning, the magic system, everything. It all came together and finished stunningly. However, as in book one, I wish they were a little bit longer with a tad more detail explaining some things.

“Sin wrapped up in skin,”

“You can choose anything else you want, anything, as long as you choose me,”

“I have given enough. I have lost enough. I am not going to lose you, too.”

"Nothing here has any value without you. You're my home,"

“She made me a god, and her body was my altar.”

🗯️💬BOOK BLURB:💬🗯️

The sexy high-heat vampires of J.R. Ward meet Gothikana in this page-turning dark academia romance and sequel to The Coven.

Betrayal.

He was the deception waiting in the night; the truth I never saw coming. After a lifetime of manipulation, I finally learned the truth. I was his puppet―even if I never saw my strings.

Even knowing how deep his betrayal runs, I can’t shake the undeniable connection between Gray and I―the way a single glance from him sets my soul on fire. We are not the same. We're enemies, poised to battle for the future of the very thing I’d wanted to destroy.

To protect my Coven from my husband’s hatred―no matter what the cost.

🤔🧐🤯MY THOUGHTS:🤯🧐🤔

The triggers are rampant in this book so please read the warning carefully!!

That being said, I love how devoted Gray is to his reluctant wife, Willow, he lovingly calls Witchling. She is too stubborn to admit that she loves him just as much as he loves her and doesn’t realize that her own Coven is willing to sacrifice her in order to be rid of Gray.

Once discovers their betrayal there is no stopping Gray and Willow as a couple! He’s willing to give her anything she wants. Willow just needs to accept she’s worth it and accept it.

I’m ready for the next book in the series and this one was just released! The sex scenes are extremely spicy 🥵. I need a man like Gray 😅!!

RATING KEY:

🌟 Stars - based on the overall plot and theme or idea of the book
❤️‍🩹 Emotions - based on how emotional I got while reading
🥰 Romance - based on how well I got invested in the love story aspect
🌶️ Spice - based on how the sex scenes were portrayed and written as well as the number of sex scenes
🔎 Mystery - based on how well it kept me guessing who, how and why
😰 Scared/Anxious - based on how scared or anxious the book made me while reading
🎭 Comedy/Tragedy based on if I laughed or if there was a tragic event and how it affected me. I will mark the Masks with either a C or T to indicate Comedy or Tragedy

No. Just no. I had to force myself to finish this because I refuse to be a quitter.

The plot... where did it go?!?! It was lost with all the smut. Honestly this was so bad to me it was almost unbearable. If you are looking for all smut and no plot or character development then this is for you. Otherwise just read the first book and call it a day.

I guess I'm in the minority because I really enjoyed this one even more than the first. I thought it was pretty fast-paced after like 10 percent and I liked the conflict, worldbuilding, and the stakes in this book. There's a lot more spice and the plot became very biblical all of a sudden which was weird but I enjoyed it. There's more magic, necromancy, and Lucifer, Micheal, hell, and fallen angel lore. The ending was a bit abrupt and the romance seemed rushed at the end but overall I enjoyed the forced proximity, witches/demons paranormal romance. Thanks to Bramble for an arc of the new hardcovers.

Okay I'm sorry....but what on earth did I just read??? Literally nothing happened in this book, just a whole lot of talking, and more talking, and even more talking. Walking from one part of the school to the next. Willow thinking she can get revenge, but come on honey, we all know where this is going to end. Willow being an idiot and getting played AGAIN. This was so unbearably slow and had essentially zero plot to move it along. Honestly should have DNF'd this, it was so bad.

First - I love Harper (Adelaide) so much and I appreciate her sending me an eARC.

Second - the same issues I had with The Coven occur in this one. If she just explained things a little bit more, it would be a 5 star for me.

I absolutely love Willow and the story, but the reason this is a 4 star and not 4.5 is the way she rushed everything at the end. I would have read another 50-100 pages.

Also I still am confused exactly what went down the last 10%.

This felt like a let-down after the first book. I couldn’t get into the story and didn’t feel like anything of substance was happening. Until of course the last 15% when absolutely everything was happening at once and it felt like a complete clusterf*ck. These characters did not feel loveable, I was not rooting for them like I wanted to, and I did not find myself caring about what would happen next :/

Sad to say that I do not see myself continuing this series, even as it moves to being traditionally published.

”She made me a god, and her body was my altar.”

”She was the instrument, and I was the conductor. Our song was one of pain and ecstasy, although it was ours all the same.”

This is the conclusion to the Coven of Bones duet, picking back up in Crystal Hollow where The Coven left off with Willow and Gray learning how to navigate pretty much everything together.

4 ⭐️! THIS DID NOT DISAPPOINT!I am so relieved. The Coven was one of my top books this year and I was so nervous that the finale to the duet wouldn’t be able to measure up but it absolutely DID. This completely exceeded all of my expectations.

”For her, I'd spend my life on my knees if she asked it of me.”

Besides Harpers insanely talented storytelling skills, what made this duet worth reading was Gray. Alaric fucking Gray.He was EVERYTHING AND SO MUCH MORE! Possessive, FILTHY, relentless, greedy, DEADLY. BUT what made him different was his complete reverence for her and how desperately he wanted her to gain her own independence and strength apart from his. He literally built her up and believed in her so fully it was amazing to read. He did not allow her to be a weak damsel in distress. I will accept ZERO criticisms about him.

When he did something wrong in the book? 👩‍🦯👩‍🦯👩‍🦯 Sorry, I didn’t see a thing. 🤷‍♀️

”Where others might have wanted to control the fire in her veins, I only wanted to watch her learn how to embrace what it was to burn.”

“She needed to defy expectations, to thrive with the man who appreciated her tendency to stab first and ask questions later and hide her vulnerabilities with carefully barbed words.”

The action in this was shockingly good. The climactic moment towards the end with the mirror was one of the best action scenes i’ve ever read. The visceral reaction her writing evokes had my heart beating like a drum and I was literally sweating. I wish this book could’ve been longer because I was not ready for their story to end. I am excited to see if there will be future books with Margot because that story definitely needs to be told. Anyway, in conclusion, please read this duet immediately.

“The violence of the dance between us meant we could simultaneously want to bleed one another and want to fuck; two opposing storms crashing together. We just had to hope we would remain after the rain.”

“I knew we had the potential to destroy one another--to burn until there was nothing left except ash. Only if we didn't choose to put one another first.”

2.5 ⭐️ This book lacks depth pretty much everywhere except for the spice. Similar to the first book, I felt this story really could have taken off if the author focused more on building up the world and giving us more details about the magic system. Instead, every detail felt grazed over. The spice was great, but that’s about the only part of this book that was well crafted.

The reviews are all over the place with this that's for sure. Just goes to showcase how subjective book opinions are. So where do I stand? I'm somewhere in the middle. I didn't outright love this but I did mostly like it with some small niggles. It definitely wasn't as impactful as its predecessor which I devoured in one sitting but i still appreciated this for what it was.

So niggles first, well this did at times feel a bit all over the place with so many direction pulls that at times it felt choppy and left me a tad disoriented. There were so many story threads and It would have felt much more coherent to me if just a few were concentrated on. I imagine it's because the author is planning to continue with alternative characters within this world so these breadcrumbs were dropped to support this. My personal preference though would have been less going off on a tangent and more focus on our central couple Willow and Gray.

Which brings me to Willow herself, this girl gave me whiplash she has so many personalities that I had difficulty honing in on just who Willow is at her core. She couldn't decide if she was team good or team evil. Her wanting to get rid of her husband was less about the greater good and more about just how terrified she was of her rapidly growing feelings. I'd have preferred if she had just embraced the one persona cause the rapid turnaround to team hubby didn't feel that authentic and can I say hypocrite much cause she had the Coven punished for what she was more than willing to do manipulated or not, where is the personal accountability. I also found the ending a bit rushed.

So despite the above i did enjoy this It was easily digestible almost like some addictive telenovela that you just can't turn away from. The spice was notched up a level and this second book was on steroids when it came to playtime. The connection between these two was combustible and intense. If you don't like your books spicy then this is probably not going to be for you because this was Smokin.

My man Gray I was all there for he's like an extremely murderous poppet that isn't pestered by that bothersome thing called a conscience. He doesn't have any moral boundaries and was willing to do whatever he needed to protect willow and I appreciated that about him. As you can surmise I was definitely more team Gray than team Willow.

This dropped some serious breadcrumbs for what's to come and I'm definitely on board for all that so I will pick up future books in this world. I've rated this a four but it's probably closer to a 3.5 and though this wasn't a complete win I did enjoy myself and it was very digestible just be aware that book one is definitely the stronger of the two.
