I just realized I hadn't rated this. Dur.

Oh, wow. Loved this book. Angel books are hard to do and this one is the best. And Kaidan? Can I lick him? Heck, I'll lick Wendy. Okay. Maybe shouldn't have written that. This is why I don't do reviews. Le sigh.

I walked right into this one. I admit it and I know it’s my fault, and I probably deserve what I got. However, that doesn’t mean it makes it less painful.

Sweet Evil is the most idiotic book I’ve read this year. And I mean it. I totally mean it. I could tell I was going to regret getting it since page one.
Running had become my new pastime five weeks ago, after I’d read how my body is the “temple of my soul.” Healthy temple: check.

Wha??

Ok, it’s not THAT bad but I still had a feeling deep down my heart. It was telling me ”Put the book down and walk away.” As you can tell I chose to ignore it.

Aaanyways, lemme tell you what Sweet Evil is all about. So we have this girl Anna. She is goodness personified. An angel. The perfect girl, pure, sweet hearted, kind, shy, invisible, smart, always does her homework, reminds the teacher that she forgot to check the class’ homework. Wendy Higgins wanted to create the perfect sweet little heroine. A Mary Sue, true and true.

And yes she does see herself ugly but in reality she is so hot that all the boys from their school want to bang her. Of course, typical Mary Sue behavior.

So we have Saint Anna who is a misunderstood little hipster. She has her Bella Swan mood going on, she’s anti-partying, anti-drinking, anti-drugs (even though she practically drools over alcohol and drugs – but that’s her little secret, shhhh), whatever evil (wink wink) thing you may imagine – she’s against it. Did I mention she’s a virgin?

But oh no, she’s far from perfect. I mean she has a freckle!!! At the end of her upper lip!!! And people STARE at it when she talks!!! Disgusting. Horrible..

Oh yes, this makes her a more believable character. SHE HAS FLAWS YOU GUYS!!!
“They only think they like me because they don’t know me,” I said.

Yeah, so Saint Anna is a special kind of bird. She has this mood-ring thing going on. You remember those little things? The mood rings? You put it on and it changes color. And you look at a little chart that tells you what that color says about your current mood. It’s actually a fun thing even though it doesn’t really work. I wish it did though. Anyhow, Anna is a big 'ol mood ring. She sees people’s emotions through the colors they are emitting. And she has a superhero olfactory sense.
Being able to hear and see and smell everything within a one-mile radius was major sensory overload.

Then can you smell what The Rock is cooking?

All is normal and boring in Saint Anna’s life until she goes at a concert and lays her innocent eyes on a devilish drummer. This vile creature breaks the poor girl’s circuits and turns her into a vixen. Oh my!
“That guy, the drummer? Get this. He’s a killer musician, he gets tons of chicks, his dad’s loaded, and as if that wasn’t enough, he’s got a friggin’ English accent!”

A British accent?! GASP!

Oh the good 'ol British accent. You know things are about to get juicy when an author busts it out.

So this dude Kaidan, as you can already tell, is another perfect being. Everyone seems to be perfect in this book. Except for her mum, but I’ll get back to that later. So he seems perfect from every way. Wrong. Oh, he's faaar from perfect. Because.. he’s a demon that feeds on SEX.

Kai, like Thai, only yummier. Gah! Who was this girl invading my brain?

Oh no.
Good gracious, he was sexy—a word that had not existed in my personal vocabulary until that moment.

Please stop.
I tried to focus on his words and not his luxuriously accented voice, which made everything sound lovely.

...
Gosh, his eyes were gorgeous—the color of tropical honeymoon waters ringed in dark sapphire and enclosed by thick lashes.

Tropical honeymoon waters you say.

Oh and by the way he is special too. Get this, he also has a mood ring superpower! They have matching mood rings, it's totally cute.

It seems like Kaidan is probably there to make her join his little mood ring club, since they have the same traits and all. Or something. I dropped the book around 40% so can't tell you for sure.
“Then what am I?” I asked with apprehension.
“Your parents were angels.”

Wow. Completely unexpected turn of events.

And the thing is Patti (her mum) knows about Kaidan being a sexual deviant. She’s not her real mum though, our dearest Mary Sue is adopted. Her mom's one and only trait?

OVERPROTECTIVE

So dear Anna wants to go on a search to find her real dad who is a bad angel of sorts in order to bla bla bla something I can't even remember but I'm sure was important. And her mum’s too busy to take a day off (???) so she sends her pure little daughter with Kaidan, the evil British accented sex starved demon. On a road trip. The two teenagers alone. For a couple of days. And she comes up with the idea herself.

You’re sending your daughter with a *sexy* demon and you think she’ll be safe. You go crazy over a party that Saint Anna wanted to attend. You called the parents to make sure the kids will be supervised and all. And now your sweet innocent angel daughter Anna wants to go out of town with the hottest dude on the planet that happens to be a demon. And you’re ok with it.

Did I mention he has a British accent? Because he does. And it's hot.

Eventually they go on the trip and poor Angel Anna is trying her best to avoid being seduced by the sexy Kaidan. She rents one room for both of them, stalks him, kisses him, sees him buck naked the morning after. Next thing you know she’ll be biting her lip and fluttering her lashes and will wonder ”Am I giving the wrong signal?”.

Yeah. DNF at ~40%

Yes, Sweet Evil does put an original spin on all the angel/demons/nephilim stories that are out there. But nevertheless, this does not alter the fact that it’s still complete and utter rubbish. The sheer amount of ridiculousness in this 464 pages long novel is dumbfounding. I spent a great deal of time laughing in disbelief or growling in frustration because of it.

The characters are as one dimensional as a stick figure. Their behavior is odd (I don’t know of a single person who talks and acts like these characters do), OOC and illogical. And sometimes even just plain wrong.

Anna is the mother of goodie-two-shoes. She doesn’t lie. (Well, she did once... On purpose. Shocker! Wait till you read what she lied about. LOL. *rolls eyes*) Words like sexy and hott—yes, with a double t—didn’t exist in her vocabulary until she met Kaidan. She cries all the time. She’s naïve. She says one thing, but does the other. She goes all ‘Double Rainbow’ over seeing a rainbow and crossing the state border. The only thing I couldn’t figure out about her—and what drove me a bit crazy—is why the hell she doesn’t own a cell phone.

Her adoptive mother, Patti, is the worst and most awkward parent ever. Not only did she knowingly allow her just-turned 16-year-old (and extremely naïve) daughter on a 5-day cross-country trip with a 17-yeard-old boy that she doesn’t know at all (and I mean AT ALL), oh no, she also went down the awkward route and told that same boy to bring her daughter back with her virtue intact.
“Hands off, Mister!”
Yes, she actually said that. Who talks like this? And what adult weeps like a 10-year-old when facing a problem?

Anna’s father is the Duke of drinking and drug abuse. He and his demon minions are responsible for all the drunks and drug addicts in this world, basically. So, being the good father that he is, he shows his daughter how to hold her liquor.
“You’re gonna need to learn your drinking limits. I don’t want you to end up in a situation where you don’t know your boundaries.”
“How am I supposed to learn?”
“You drink. Under my supervision. Well figure out how much you can handle in a certain amount of time, and practice controlling it so you can stay coherent and not get drunk.”

I know she’s supposed to lure people into drinking and stuff, but there are things/words no father, demon or not, should teach/say to his child.

And then there’s Kaidan. Or as Anna once said: “Kai, like Thai, only yummier.” (*rolls eyes*) He is in a band, he has the looks, an English accent and is the son of the Duke of Lust—totally swoon-worthy bad boy material, right? No. Nope. Absolutely not. A tortured, brooding and fairly boring man-slut/male prostitute, that’s the best and only way to describe Kai. I was utterly disgusted every time he said to Anna that he needs to go ‘working.’ How can you fall for someone who needs to, yes, needs to, fuck some bimbo’s brains out every night is beyond my understanding.

Just like the characters, the story did, too, rub me totally the wrong way. Higgins completely failed to create a believable and internally consistent narrative. It went from one ridiculous and odd thing to another. The way she moved the story from point A to point B was unsettling. It gave me the feeling that she didn’t care at all how strange and downright bizzare certain things would sound or look like. As if all that she wanted was to get the characters/storylines into a desired position as quickly as possible. Screw logic and common sense.

» No money for a road trip? Let the loaded 17-year-old boy, the MC and her mother just met, offer them both a ride.

» A road trip with a parent would be boring and the parent would endanger the opportunity for long lustful nights? Just write down that the mother has to work. No reader will mind that her child is only sixteen. She will totally come off as a hip and cool mom.

» But where will they sleep? They can’t rent a room in a motel. Duh, just make Kaidan an emancipated minor.

» It’s time to bring daddy into the picture, but he’s in prison and you really need him out of there? How convenient that he happens to have a parole hearing coming up. That's just so dandy!
I could go on and on...

And don’t even let me start how pointless the whole road trip was in the end.

Would I recommend this read? No, absolutely not. Not even to my biggest enemy. But seeing how many other readers were thrilled by this book... I don't know. Maybe some of you will, for some inexplicable reason, actually like it. But Sweet Evil most definitely wasn't my cup of tea.

I'm going to be upfront with you about this book—Sweet Evil tops the books coming out in 2012 easily. There's no way I can tell you how much I utterly adore this book, which is why I took me forever to write a proper review for it. I'll start off with why I love this book so much. Originality—finally someone who gets it right! Among all the books out there about angels and demons Sweet Evil has the most original take on them that I've read. The whole badge concept and the fact that the Nephilim's sole purpose is being bad influences to humans is pure genius!

The characters. If there's any YA character that is swoon-worthy than Kaidan Rowe is exactly that. Every time he's in a scene of the book I'm practically bouncing up and down with excitement. There isn't a thing I don't like about him. Kaidan is my man. ;) Anna is an amazing female protagonist, and I felt even the side characters were all very well developed. The plot's pacing is perfect. I never felt bored anywhere or felt the need to stop. There was always something interesting to keep my attention. Which brings me to my 3rd reason for loving this—high stakes. The higher the stakes are in a book the more I want to read it. Sweet Evil does not fail in making that happen.

I am completely enamored with SweetEvil. It's one of those books you're only expecting to read for about a half hour or so (because you're busy and have other work you should probably be attending to) and end up reading the whole thing in one sitting, forgetting all the things you had to do that day (Spoken from true experience!). So yeah, even though I've already read this I'm going straight to the bookstore in May to get a shiny brand new copy and will probably re-read it several times until the next one comes out. :)

EXTRA THOUGHTS on the whole cross country road trip, her mother shouldn't have allowed her to go, etc stuff that I've seen here:

OKAY. So if you have read through the entire novel you know that Patti (Anna's mom) knew that Anna was never going to be just a normal person. She knows that Anna is destined for something. NOW Patti is one of those really (and I mean REALLY) religious people, where if she knew that God wanted her to do something she would do it. Now you can't say parents like this don't exist in the REAL world because they most certainly do. She knows that Anna going on the CROSS-COUNTRY TRIP has a great deal to do with her mission, that if she didn't complete it in time that it wouldn't be working well in God's favor. I'm not much of a religious person but I knew a lot of the things in this book was referenced from biblical text.

That is why it makes sense to me that PATTI would allow Anna to go on the trip. If you read the scene about Anna's birth and how Patti came to adopt her it makes sense why Patti would believe that letting Anna go was the right thing for her to do. NOW, if I didn't know any backstory on Anna's birth and wasn't paying attention to her mother's attitude toward religion then I would have thought her consenting to the trip was a crazy idea but that is not the case here. :/

Yo, listen up, this is a roast/rant review and there's going to be a fuckload of F bombs. You've been warned. And if you liked this book then don't read my review bc you're going to end up pissed off??

Guys, never in my life, have I ever something as shitty, annoying and fucking petty as this fucking book. This book made me want to cut my fucking eyeballs out and cry in annoyance and frustration. Never have I read a book this horrible, that I was to the point where it physically hurt me to turn another page and read the bullshit that is this book. Literally, I am crying tears of pain.

First of fucking all,
who the fuck let this get published in the fucking Young Adult genre? I'm sorry, who the fuck let this book get published at all??? And that cover. That fucking cover is so horrible my eyes hurt looking at it.

The writing:
Hey y'all, are you guys sure an adult wrote this??? You sure it's isn't some 12 or thirteen year old? Y'all sure? For real? "W O W Z A" that's a surprise! Literally, what the fucking fuck is the writing. So fucking immature, beyond fucking annoying, bland as fuck, petty as fuck, and did I mention annoying as fucking fuck?

This is how the author described some of the "things" in this book:

"My eye glided to the cloud thing, which moved around her..."

"The shadow thing floated along next to her..."

W O W Z A what a way to fucking describe something 10/10 description you fucking go!

The author also gives this shitload of info dumping and i'm just like????? back up???? what the fuck is happening???? like?????

That's literally nothing, this entire book was me having to read about a fucking whiny special snowflake who couldn't shut the fucking hell up about how much she fucking want Kaidan fucking Rowe. Like, bitch, shut your mother fucking annoying, whiny bitch ass mouth about how fucking hot Kaidan is and how much you want his fucking dick buried in your fucking vagina. I legit feel like this entire book was about this annoying, whiny bitch wanting Kaidan's dick in her vagina, which she sadly mistakes for "love."

This fucking Anna girl is so fucking naive and stupid, God help her fucking pathetic ass. I fucking hated her and I'm hoping she dies sometime in the next books.

And Kaidan. Mother fucking Kaidan you guys! The hottest guy to ever place foot on the entire fucking earth. Makes every girl panties drip, you guys! He's so fucking hot and Anna couldn't seem to shut the fuck up about how fucking hot he was! BITCH SHUT THE FUCK UP, I GET IT, JESUS FUCKING CHRIST I GET IT HE'S THE SEXIEST PIECE OF MEAT ALIVE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO REPEAT THAT SHIT OVER AND OVER.

This entire book is Anna lusting after this bitch Kaidan. I hate Kaidan. And I hope he dies sometime later in the series too! :)

P.S the W O W Z A was annoying right? Well it was from the book.... :)

BR numero dos with my ass whipper who I couldn't have survived without.

My Anna and Kaiden:

“...but even the devout have weaknesses. The demons have to take different measures with different cultures, because some are more accepting of sin, while others are stricter. It’s all a matter of semantics and presentation. They come up with ingenious ways to promote pain and apathy, kind of like marketing schemes. Seek pleasure. Eat, drink, and be merry. Carpe diem.”

Anna is ideal student and equivalent of a good girl. She never lies, because even small harmless lie makes her uncomfortable. She is strongly tempted to all "bad" things, but so far she has always been able to resist them. With her extremely enhanced senses and ability to see and feel feelings of other people, she is aware of the fact that she is different. Than she meets attractive drummer and bad boy Kaiden who seems too be different himself and has answers to her questions. The feelings between those two evoke but when Anna discovers her true origin, she realizes that Kaiden may be too bad for her and being together is very dangerous for both of them. Will she be able to resist this sweet evil temptation???

Anna was quite a naive character at the beginning since she was sheltered from all bad her whole life. However, she was extremely nice and compassionate person, she really grew on me and I ended up loving her a lot.

I really liked Kaiden too. He was destined to do bad things but Anna discovered something good in him, got under his skin and gave him a hope. It was very insteresting to read about how afftected Kaiden was by Anna but simultaneously tried to stay true to his sinful origin.

Sweet Evil was excellent introduction into this YA paranormal series. I was blown away by angels & demons mythology and original twists in this story. First half was not very action-driven BUT it was very interesting to find out all those information about Nephilims and get to know characters. Moreover, banters and conversations between Anna and Kaiden were entertaining and chemistry between them was off the charts. I was pleasantly surprised that even though Sweet Evil is YA story, some scenes were really hot! The second half was undownputtable, I loved every second of it and I cannot wait to find out what is in store for Anna, Kaiden and other characters in next instalment!

Anna Whitt is anything but normal and she knows it. She can see other people’s ‘feelings’ through the colour of their aura. She feels like a freak except when she is with her friend Jason. Jason eats, breathes and lives music and also has taken Anna into his fold. Around the time for her sixteenth birthday, it is through Jason that Anna meets Kaidan – the HOT drummer with no emotions that she can see/feel. Anna realizes that Kaidan is like her and they take a road trip to go and meet Anna’s father and that is when she slowly discovers about her heritage and who she truly is.

The characters in this book are really swoon worthy. Anna is a sweet girl who had been kept in the dark for a long time by her adoptive mother. But when she finds out about herself she accepts it immediately as she had always known that something was different about her. However, she is not one of those overthinking sissy female leads who moans about how unfair her life is or over analyze every situation. She is practical and always ready to do what needs to be done. Kaidan on the other hand comes across this ‘brute’ – a rude and arrogant. But his strength and integrity of character is unquestionable. But the character I loved the most was Kopano. His strength of character is what makes him stand out in the story. Unlike other Nephs who give in to their demon father’s wishes, Kopano took the chance to stand up for what he believed. He went against his very own nature to do what was right. I love him for that.

I haven’t read about Nephilim before and my reading experience about angels is truly limited. So this book opened a new world of ideas to me – ideas that I truly liked. There were a few moments in the story that seemed like too much of a coincidence or just too convenient or a bit farfetched, still they weren’t anything major. I was able to just think that ‘this is just fiction after all’ and move on. And specifically for that, I would like to give credit to the author’s style of writing. It was so simple yet engrossing that a few bumps along the way did not matter much. Overall, I liked the plot and I am looking forward to the next part in the installment – just hoping there will be bit more action in it.

MUAHAHAHAHA! I'M FIRST!!!! In your faces!!!
Review coming soon! As soon as we get the cover art! Reviews aren't cool without pretty cover art to go with them. :D Love you, Wendy!

Edit:

Wendy...can I have permission to shake my bum in everyone's faces? Please! Please! I am anyway! *shakes bum in everyone's faces* Muahaha! Okay, so yes, Wendy's one of my best friends, and yes, I got to Beta read this awesome book, but no, I will not lie in my reviews. So when I say it's awesome, I mean it!

Wendy combines so much of what readers love to read in YA with this book. She leaves out the problems that make people annoyed and replaces them with original ideas and realistic situations that made me forget I was reading a commercial paranormal romance. I fell in love with Kaidan, one of the few paranormal male leads that is realistic with all the qualities we girl readers love. Sweet Evil is just such a breath of fresh air, with great writing and exciting plot twists and discoveries. Loved every minute of it! Read it!

So, I'm not going to make a hateful rant where I just stomp on this book and throw it in a blazing fire or flush it down the toilet or ... sorry I got off track. Because, one: many of my friends loved this book; and hey, that's awesome! I wish I did too! Two: I actually was enjoying the first two hundred-ish pages.
*Note after writing the review: I know I said I'm not writing a hateful rant but I did get a bit hateful on the characters, just a heads-up!*
I did think it was ridiculous, but I was enjoying my time nonetheless! But then it got boring because of all the angst that was thrown at me. Like I didn't sign up for this much drama and oh-he-doesn't-love-me-I'm-nothing-without-him-wah-wah-wah shit, okay??
All I wanted was just a fun easy book to read and forgive all the tiny—huge in this case—problematic troops and cliche romance that can get quite cringe-y.
So, Anna, the main sweet virgin who knows nothing about boys and is shy and can't handle herself around other people. Her best and only friend, Jay—because fuck female friends right? They're bitches anyway, except for Anna of course! She a virgin duh! She ain't hanging with all those sluts who only want to sleep with every hot guy they meet, like, duh!! Sorry I got off track again.
As I was saying, Jay has to babysit her everywhere, because without him, she might get drugged, raped, killed, or all of them together. She can't read people for shit.
Everyone's nice right? They won't hurt me!!!!!!!!!!!!
She doesn't say that but that's how her actions translate for me.
Kaiden, he was okay in the beginning, kinda jerk face, but who am I to talk, apparently jerks are the hot stuff nowadays. They get all them ladies' panties wet yo. *rolls eyes*
Then he has this weird shift in the middle of the book, like who are you???
Now, it got boring for me because of this problem that arose, I was like, "Wait this problem has always existed, since the beginning, why is it only being acknowledged now?"
I mean I wish it was like the addicting kind of angst; it was just Anna whining about Kaiden, blah blah blah. FOR. THREE. FUCKING. MONTHS.
As I said the problem was there from the beginning!! This whole book wouldn't exist if it was handled at the start!
The world is kinda interesting, I admit, but the way the author built it was the worst kind of way. Yes, yes and yes. The hideous info dump. A whole fucking long ass chapter would be Anna talking to someone to help her understand the shit that's happening. SO. BORING.
Like seriously, the author couldn't think of another way? I understand that Anna needs someone to tell her the stuff, but really???
Anyway. I think 1.5 stars rounded up to two is a fair rating. Not gonna continue on the trilogy because when I think about reading more about Anna and her whining, and how she loves Kaiden and can't move on from him to another dude; I think I'd have more fun watching paint dry.

*****
I have been playing DMC on my PC for a while now and it has gotten me into some demon-on-angel-action mood, so yeah, this was my pick. Seems like some ridiculous read, but nonetheless, fun.
Another BR with The Devil who like to call me The Ass Whipper . It's not like what you might be thinking, I swear.

THREE I LOVE KAIDAN STARS.

description

First things first, this book may have a healthy helping of the sweet but it certainly delivered the evil with that cliff hanger ending. I need to get my hands all over book two in this series and luckily for me it's available to instant one-click. What a likeable, interesting and addictive young adult read. Wendy Higgins is an author who had a tale to tell and has shared it well. Packed to the brim with action, self discovery and a simmering attraction between good and evil I think I've found myself an enjoyable paranormal series to get lost in. Read on for my sweet and oh-so-evil book thoughts ...

What's it all about?
Anna Whitt has always know she was different, growing up with an ability to see and feel the emotions of those around her, she is aware that she has an extraordinary gift. What she's about to discover is that there's a whole world unknown to her that whether she likes it or not she is apart of. During this journey of self discovery she meets the dangerously attractive drummer, Kaidan Rowe, he's the one temptation that she is finding hard to resist, and is discovering that all she wants is to jump into this simmering attraction with abandon. But Anna has much more to discover than just her first love she has a life time of questions and unanswered pieces to the puzzle to unravel and so Anna starts on the path towards finding love, discovering the meaning of her life and fulfilling her destiny.

description

What did I like?
What a wickedly delicious tale of good vs evil, Wendy Higgins has created a good balance of storyline, fun and young adult appropriate romance. There was plenty to like about this novel and after being on my 'to be read' shelf for longer than necessary I finally decided to take the plunge and although this book didn't sweep me away into 'five-star-love-struck-book-heaven' it certainly gave me a solid enjoyment level of entertainment. The unexpectedness of the story line was the winning factor for this book, the twists and turns and character development all pulled together to make an exiting and interesting race to the finish.

description

Why not five?
Let me start by saying that a three star rating from me means that I enjoyed it, it was likeable, I never wanted to stop reading the book. But when I compared it to what I wold consider 'like-for -like' in this genre it didn't quite meet up to the enjoyment factor of those books or series. One of the main factors for a lesser rating was the lack of butterfly inducing scenes, I missed the character connection somewhat, but having said that this book has got me hooked and I'm more than willing to carry on with the series. My other issue was how close to the bone it felt in terms of spiritual happenings, I think because of my personal faith it might have developed in my mind as too true to likeness of reality, instead of a paranormal romance that is up there with the reality of fairies and goblins. however overall it has an undeniable like-ability factor to it that I'm sure I won't forget about.

description

Final thoughts ...
This is a young adult paranormal series that has got it's claws in me, I can't wait to pick up book two in this series and I'll be sure to look out for more from this author. One more thing worth mentioning, for a young adult series the characters, Kaidan and Anna were something special I can't wait to learn more about them and hopefully fall in love right along side them. Go grab it readers, I believe book three in the trilogy is available in April. Enjoy ... Kisses.

Anna was good.
She good in a way that she doesn’t commit any wrongdoing if she could help it.
She always had the urge to do the right thing.
She wasn’t normal and she knew that all too well.
She tried her best to blur out the weird things that were happening to her so that she could live as normally as she could.
She was not expecting her world to turn upside down when she met the drummer of the band Lascivious, Kaidan Rowe.
Kaidan Rowe was bad news and she knew it.
She kept on telling herself it was better to stay away but she couldn’t.
There was something about the elusive Kaidan that draws Anna to him.
Was it just his charm?
They were nothing like each other.
But are they really different or more the same?

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Honestly, the thing that drew me to this book in the first place was the cover and the title.
They were pretty good.
Sweet evil.
You have to admit that title would make you curious.
The cover was pretty haunting.
The balance of the white and the black and the red gown.
It was just so good.
But of course I am not very happy with the guy on the cover.
He looks like a zombie and Kaidan was NOTHING like that.
Kaidan was H.O.T and not C.O.L.D and that guy on the cover was C.O.L.D.
Not really Kaidan like for me.
I mean I could go on and on all day about Kaidan but I will have to get to that later.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

When I started reading this book I was so happy.
I loved the writing style and the character Anna already made an impression on me.
But then I had to stop for a while because it was too slow for me.
I was also seriously thinking about just not finishing the book all together because I am not really a fan of slow paced books. I get bored easily.
Still I picked it up and decided to just go on with it and give it another shot.
Imagine my surprise!
It was so great! I was so glad I finished it.
Reading this book gave me a wide range of emotions.
It got me serious, happy, sad, scared, curious, anxious, and impatient and a bunch of other stuff.
This book is one of those “Let-Me-Surprise-You” books.
It will definitely catch you off guard.
It will keep you at the edge waiting on what will happen next.
I starts out slow then gradually increase pace, then it gets faster and *BBBOOOOMMM*! It will blow your mind!
I think the gradual pace change definitely worked for this book.
It will give you enough time to adjust with the information that will be shared by the characters about who they are and what they are dealing with.
Also another thing that I found good with this book was the use of the angels and the demons.
There was some truth in it.
I mean we all know what happened to Lucifer and the fallen angels right? And this book stayed true to that but with a bunch of other stuff included.
It was pretty believable for me. It almost made me fear that there were such things as the Dukes of Hell and their sons or daughters that roam with us every day without us ever knowing.
I am a big fan on angel books and for those who know me, I am a very big fan of the Mortal Instruments and if you are too then you will probably get culture shock when you read this.
The use of the Nephilims here are different as to how they were used in the MI or ID.
There were a lot of seriously good stuff here.

CHARACTERS

Anna
She was a very fun character to read.
I have never once thought I’d enjoy reading about a goody-goody character like her.
I was expecting her to be whiny but she wasn’t.
She had a lot of self control but *beeeeeeeppppppppp*. I can’t really say because that’s gonna be a major spoiler. You have to read it so that you’ll know!
I don’t have any problems with her at all.
She also leaves good lines once in a while.
She despite being *beeeeeeeeppppp* still has hormones, raging hormones. Hahaha.
And although she was good (in every sense of the word), she was still human.
She gets hurt. She feels pain. She feels insecure.
She was so real to me and I loved that about her.
She was flawed and not the perfect but helpless girl in almost every YA books now a days.

Kaidan

I totally take back what I said about not being able to connect with him because I totally could now.
I mean wow! This guy had a lot of things going on.
First off, I would like to warn everyone that this guy is oozing with H.O.T.N.E.S.S you’ll feel it through the pages of the book
He makes me go like this:

Funny gif Pictures, Images and Photos

I know it looks weird but he makes me lick my lips. A lot! Hahaha.
He was not your typical lead male character.
He wasn’t good. He was H.O.T yes but he was bad news!
Yep! This guy is not good news so it’s better to stay away but this guy will make sure you don’t get enough of him because he’s *bbbeeeeeeeeeeeeppp*. (a major spoiler there!)
Despite this guy’s sins you’ll still love him because you’ll know he’s not all wicked inside.
I just wish Kaidan finds himself or finds me at least. Hahaha. :D
I imagine him looking something like this:

Smiiiiirk Pictures, Images and Photos
[image error]

If ever this becomes a movie I want him to look somewhat like Ian.

ian somerhalder gif Pictures, Images and Photos

Other Characters

There are a lot of other characters you should look out for. There’s Anna’s adopted mom Patti who I love to death and Anna’s biological dad who surprised the heck out of me.
Jay who has been Anna’s friend from the start was also a cool friend who was clueless on what was going on.
At one point of the book you’ll meet Kaidan’s dad, his friends and you’ll be introduced to the life that Kaidan has and what Anna was supposed to have had.
Characters were pretty 3 dimensional so they’re pretty good.

KAIDAN + ANNA =

Sure we all want a good story but what’s a good story without a little bit of romance on the side huh?

Chemistry? Definitely there although at first I thought Kaidan was pretty dull to me but as the story progressed I was like “Boy was I so wrong!”
You’ll think Good Anna and Bad Kaidan won’t work?
Well I am going to tell you that you are soooo wrong!
Just by reading about these two kids make my insides tingle with excitement.
I was so under their spell. I was just speechless although out

ian somerhalder gif Pictures, Images and Photos

It was this steamy! Hahaha. Just kidding.
This book was steamy but not that graphic or anything. I won’t recommend it to younger kids though.
But really Anna and Kaidan? They are just so perfect for each other. Like it or not but they are.

Closing Thoughts

This book was such a surprise to me. I never expected myself to really like it and devour it and get addicted to it like this. There is just so much to love about this book. One of which is the flow of the story slow but gradually increasing until you throw yourself out of your seat because of excitement. One thing I didn’t exactly like was the ending. I just HATE CLIFFHAGERS! But still I adore it all the more because it kept me interested enough to know what will happen to this steamy uncanny couple. Give me the next book already Wendy! I want to get more Kaidan!

Wendy I want to hug you and never let you go for making such a successful and greatly addictive read. I am definitely a fan! So excited for the next book!

You know why I love reading? It’s because of books like this! This book seriously blew me away with it’s epic awesomness! Remember last week when I was raving and fangirling over Of Poseidon? Be aware, this will happen again, right now!

*takes a deep breath*

A Tale of Goodness and Evil, packed with an Epic Love Story
Sweet Evil is a story about evil and an epic forbidden love story! Anna was always able to see the aura of other people and she knew she was different, yet she never knew why. It’s when she meets Kaidan … *pause*… that she begins to discover who and what she is. And… its not pretty!, it’s terrifying and shatters Anna’s world!

The whole story was fast paced, never boring and I especially loved the time frame. This first book spans around 8 month of Anna’s Life and it gives so much room for development which is what I especially loved! There is so much happening, yet never overwhelming. (Although, I was admittedly and constantly overwhelmed by Kaidan’s presence..)

Anna – sweet adorable innocent Anna!
Anna was such an incredible wonderful character and I wanted to hug her simply for being her. She’s the sweetest and nicest girl you can imagine, there is nothing considerably bad about her. You might say this sounds boring and stereotype much, yet it is simply Anna’s nature to be so sweet. It’s pure her and it feels utterly genuine and real. I loved Anna with her naivety and innocence and she as a character worked absolutely perfect for this story!! Anna never felt wrong to me and it’s due to Wendy Higgins talent that I fell in love with this adorable girl!

*fans self* Kaidan … *dies*
Kaidan .. *pauses* is the perfect and exact opposite to Anna. He’s alluring, mysterious, thrilling and he is seductive. (*oh my… he’s Seductive with a Captial S) Oh and I should mention his british accent -*swoons*. He is one of those characters that instantly made an impression and you cannot turn away from him, being utterly fascinated by this boy the instant he enters to the stage! In all honesty, I have no words to describe the effect Kaidan had on me. He featured everything I love in paranormal novels including his outrageous attitude, seductive hotness, strong package and the promise that there is more inside him which needs to be discovered.

In Kaidan, there is no innocence, he’s the bad boys girl fall for and get broken. He uses girls, throws them away, yet he mostly comes out unscathed. Anna is the first girl who is not falling for his charm instantly – she’s simply not the girl who likes to play games. At the same time, Anna is the first girl that ever wants to look into his soul and his heart – something incredibly frightening for Kaidan. There is something about Anna that will ruin everything he has ever believed in …

He was smoking hot. As in H-O-T-T, hott. I’d never understood until that moment why girls insisted on adding an extra t. This guy was extra-t-worthy. – Anna, Sweet Evil, ARC pg.10

Good gracious, he was sexy – a word that had no existed in my personal vocabulary until now. - Anna, Sweet Evil, ARC, pg. 18

Love, steamy Hottness, Heartbreak, Butterflies and Tears… Tears and Tears
This whole story was incredible emotional and Wendy Higgins has this incredible talent to make you feel what their characters felt. I was right there with Anna, feeling her emotions instead of reading them, absorbing them and making them my own. THIS is why I read, this is what I want! I want to feel the butterflies when they kiss I want to feel the heartbreak and I want to shed tears with them! Sweet evil is all that and more! Moreover, Sweet Evil is incredibly sexy – it’s hot, it’s steamy yet it still stays suitable for an older YA readership. We never get too far, although this teasing was driving me nuts!

Bottom Line:
Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins is a highly seductive read, with intense and memorable characters which will suck you into their tale and occupy your mind even after finishing the last page. Anna is an adorable heroine perfect for a tale of good and evil and Kaidan is her perfect counterpart who will enter your dreams and won’t let you go! *dies of this epicness*

More like 2.5 stars. (A very generous rating)

First of all, I'm going to say this is not a bad book. It has a lot of flaws (Come on, every book has its flaws and merits.), but it also has a interesting take on angels, nephilim, and demons. That's probably the only thing I was looking forward to reading Sweet Evil. Sweet Evil was a very frustrating read and I mean the-hair-pulling-and-throwing-the-book-across-the-wall-frustration.

First, I had some problems with the characters. (Actually, minus that! I have a lot of issues with the characters!) The MC (Anna) was absolutely naive, annoying, innocent, and can be very careless and stupid! Aside those qualities, she is definitely a Mary Sue (perfect face except the freckle at the end which she thinks is her flaw, perfect body, perfect grades, and has special senses) who doesn't realizes it. At one point, she says she promise to stay away from Kaiden, but she does the complete opposite. If you say you're going to do this, then don't do the opposite! She's so perfect and literally makes 2 guys fall in love with her. How can anyone like her? I had to take lots of breaks just to get out of her head because it was damn annoying!

Don't get me started on the "hot" Kaiden. He has the looks, money, British accent, and the girls who wants him. The love interest who happened to be Kaiden is male prostitute whom is disgusting, brooding, and definetely a creep. I don't understand what Anna sees in him. Of course, he is drop-dead gorgeous, but how can you love a guy who goes out every night to have sex with girls? I don't know how many times I gagged when he says he goes "working".

Anna's adoptive mother, Patti, was even more stupid. She is just like Anna--innocent, naive (even for an adult), and extremely awkward. Of course, she's kind, nice, overprotective of Anna and helps Anna with the facts about how she was created, but I can't stand her! She's an embarrassment to Anna and there was this scene where she told Kaiden to keep Anna's virginity intact. Who's says that?! Patti was also reckless, letting her daughter go on a trip with a demon who wants to have sex with her. (And they almost did it.) Do you not know the consequences of what's going to happen with being a demon who wants to have sex with you? If I was Anna, I will stay the hell away from Kaiden. Who knows what will happen next?

For me to like a book, I have to like the characters as well, but apparently that didn't happen. I couldn't connect with the characters and that's just the end for me.

Moving on...

The romance between Anna and Kaiden (gag) was way, way, way, too quickly. It felt like Anna took one glance at him and then began falling in lust love with him. It was definitely insta-love. And you know how much I hate insta-love....*rolls eyes* I'm also predicting a love triangle in this book and in the sequel. (Love triangle with Kaiden, Anna, and Kopano)

The angel/demon/nephilim stories was original and has a strong potential in the story, but the characters failed in so many ways. That was the only interesting part out of the novel. Higgins has potential in writing a creative storyline and I wouldn't mind seeing more of it from her next books. But I'm positive about one thing. I'm not going to be reading her later works. This one just went down the drain for me.

Sorry Sweet Evil fans, this book just wasn't for me. It might not be mine, but it might be for you and from seeing a lot of 5 stars reviews, you might really like it.

A very well-written ya-paranormal novel about Angels and Demons as we've never seen them before. I liked the plot, and I liked the pace and how the heroine matured and developed throughout the book, and it's just the first novel in the series so character development at that level was not something I expected and it surprised me nicely.

Anna Whitt can see everyone's emotions, she can see and feel their feelings. Whatever that may be. It used to make her vulnerable but that's just history now. She comes from a very religious home, since her mother is a devout person and that's passed on to Anna. She and her best friend love music, well Jason loves music more and that's why he and Anna go to gigs and such. Until one night while a band they went to see was performing, Anna noticed something weird about the drummer's aura. It held no emotions, it was black and no matter how hard she tried she couldn't see behind the blackness. That certainly piqued her interest and this took a very unexpected turn for Anna and her life, it changed dramatically from that moment on.

The heroine is incredible. She's that shy, innocent girl but not one of the fake ones who pretend. She just is that way and she's okay with it. She's always been a wallflower, a loner.. She only has one friend, Jason and that's it. She doesn't pursue new friendships and she doesn't try to fit in. Write down that she's not a girly girl. Kaidan, though, the drummer boy I mentioned above is the complete opposite from Anna. He's funny, intelligent, communicative, sexy, and of course Anna is attracted to him. How these two are connected? You'll have to read to find out. Despite their differences, they have a really powerful bond and there's definitely a flame that won't be put out.

There are many more intriguing characters, but I won't go into detail about them. There are plenty of characters you'll like and maybe some you'll dislike. The only thing for sure is that this book is undeniably good.

Sweet evil quote

“...there is no way of truly knowing one’s heart until one is put to the test.”

⚠ Rewritten the review.

This book didn't work out for me. Seriously, the hell did i just read? It was so wrong, and on so many levels. I have no other idea how to say this. But this book is just wrong. I wanted to love this book, but we were not meant to be.

LIKED:
☑ world building and idea in general

DISLIKED:
☒ Characters, especially Anna. Although, for everyone else, most of them were just okay, so dislike part goes for my lack of emotional attachment. In short - I didn't care about any of them.
☒ Story.

This review contains slight spoilers!

► STORY:

"Dukes are the only demons allowed to possess human bodies. Each Duke commands a legion of demon whisperers who haunt the earth. The whisperers are called the Legionnaires. We sometimes just refer to them as spirits. Between the Dukes and the Legionnaires, there are six hundred and sixty-six demons on earth.”

I did the math. “So, twelve Dukes, six hundred fifty-four whisperers, or Legionnaires... where do the Nephilim figure in?”

“We’re just a by-product. We don’t count as human, but also don’t qualify as being part of the demon Legionnaires. We work for our fathers and keep our mouths shut. That’s it.”

This is basically the story. And the idea is the most unique concept of angels and demons . This I appreciated, but the execution was bad. Really bad. As for the actual synopsis, just read the GR's one, because my brain cells are fried.

► CHARACTERS:

Almost all of the characters are evil. Which is the point. Major point. And this is how the story is....really evil.

I think the author overused point of good and evil in this book. While in between she made characters who were shades of gray. Ok, that was the point, i get it, but she overused the goodness in Anna, and also made it like Kaidan did not have even slightest choice. Interesting. If you wanted real, i mean real, kickass bad boy, who is very very evil because he must be is Jericho Barrons from Fever. And recently, Holland from A Darker Shade of Magic. I'm sorry but I was really not fan of Kaidan.

Anna : Anna is the daughter of Belial - Duke of Substance abuse with occupation of physical addictions; primarily drugs and alcohol that being a type which makes people drink themselves to the point of idiocy or something worse. Either she is going to cry like a baby, or be evil trying to be evil (in this way: "i don't want to do it because i can - but because i must". ) She is whiny, i-want-to-kill-the-heroine type of character, which is why she is so.......... annoyiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing. I understand, she is part angel too, but she is overly sensitive and cries for everything! P.s. also, incredibly naive.

Kaidan : As for Kaidan, son of Pharzuph - Duke of Lust with occupation of craving for carnal pleasures of the body; sexual desire outside of marriage, that being whoring , he was just ok to me - but I really hated the fact that he had to continue doing his "role" as a "whore" because of his father, and even after he fell in love with Anna. Edit: After reading both Sweet Evil Extra #1 & Sweet Evil Extra #2, i actually started to slightly like Kaidan. So it went from Hate=>ok=>like=>love.

I say, this book would be so awesome, had it been in alternating POVs.

Kopano , son of Alocer - Duke of Wrath with occupation of spurning love, opting for destruction; quick to anger; unforgiving that being a type to start fights, was cool, and maybe it would be more interesting if Anna ended up with him, instead of hooking up with Kaidan. He was cool, he has interesting sin, but still........a monk.......really? Really? Still wonders why he hadn't been killed for it.

Marna & Ginger : As for Marna & Ginger, daughters of Astaroth - Duke of Adultery with occupation of breaking marriage vows; cheating on one’s spouse that being just what it said, cheating people. - Marna was cool, i liked her, and i felt sorry for her. As for Ginger, Marna's twin......... i don't know, she was so-so.

Blake :I didn't see any point in Blake, son of Melchom - Duke of Envy with occupation of desire for others’ traits, status, abilities, or situations; jealousy; coveting: this being i have no freaking clue, except for having best things and dating cool girls. Lucky him. , except that he has the best sin of them all, which is practically, doing nothing.

► OVERALL:

I'm sorry, but this book just didn't work out for me. Fantastic idea - really loved it, but I disliked the characters, and felt no attachment to any of them. Most of my friends loved it. But I just can't - there are just so many things wrong. P.S. This book is full of trigger warnings, so be careful.

Maybe one day I finish it. But I really doubt it.

I must be masochistic. I knew how much I hated this, and yet I still managed to will myself and complete the book. Now, I’ve learnt an invaluable lesson from this: don’t get carried away when a friend slogans the book as “the best thing I’ve ever read”. It’s like flipping a coin; you’ve got a fifty-fifty chance. You either love it and spend the rest of eternity fist-pumping your friend, or you will hate it and entertain yourself with dreams of flushing the story out of your mind, never mentioning the book again. Guess which road I’m going to have to take. Here’s a word of advice, should this happen to you, read the first book first. Don’t make the rookie mistake of wholeheartedly trusting your friend and enthusiastically purchase all three books in a fit of excitement. Because you will want to cry—and it won’t be because the book is a ball of empathy.

Meet Anna. She’s your average goody-two-shoes. Anna lives with her adoptive mother Patti, who might I add is super protective. Anna is the epitome of virtue; she doesn’t drink, she hasn’t kissed a guy and she doesn’t lie. What an angel. But Anna’s got a little secret; she has heightened abilities that allow her to gauge emotions and eavesdrop (let’s just tell it like it is), plus she’s afflicted by a little freckle on her top lip (whoopdedoo!). Now, up until her 16th birthday, Anna could care less about her abnormalities; she is content with being a blessed soul. But that all changes when we meet Kaidan Rowe. Knife-wielding, musician, blessed with “eyes the colour of tropical honeymoon waters ringed in dark sapphire and enclosed by thick lashes” (unlike Kopona, whose eyes are “soulful” ), and a “friggin’ English accent!” , Kaidan is the sex-on-legs male love interest.

Let’s put this delicately: Anna loses her shit from the moment she encounters Kaidan and onwards.

“Kai, like Thai only yummier. Gah! Who was this girl invading my brain”

Yes Anna, who is this girl? Anna is the most unreliable 1st POV ever. She has ridiculous thoughts, and then chastises herself, only to have the same thought in the next line. One moment Kaidan is a “…hotheaded, egocentric male slut” (let’s just say, this is hard to dispute), but rest assured guys, because well, Kaidan…Kaidan was just in his own entire league:

“He was smokin’ hott. I’d never understood until that moment why girls insisted on adding an extra T. This guy was extra-T worthy”

description

Is she serious? Am I being fucked with? Did I honestly just read that line? Any convoluted thoughts I may have had about the series cleared up in a second. If you think that Chapter One hogs all the limelight with these glorious descriptions of Kaidan and his “luxuriously accented voice, which made everything sound lovely” , then rest assured my lovelies for these lush comments are spread throughout the book.

“Good gracious, he was sexy—a word that had not existed in my personal vocabulary until that moment.”

This is what you’ll be install for folks, for the remainder 85% of the book because it gets worse.

You see, our baby girl Anna here has caught herself a little bit of “Insta!love”. It takes her four days to find herself caught up in a soul-consuming love affair (is there any form of medal that I can give her, because this is an achievement). Anna…looses herself when she’s in love. She’s a little bit obsessed, to say the least.

“You can call me anytime. If you want”

A little scope for mulling is all right, even a little bit of her “ugly stalker thoughts” are given a pass. What’s not ok is when this happens:

“Look, Jay, I’m going to be honest with you, even though it’s embarrassing. I’m one step away from stalking him.”

description

Sweetheart, that’s not embarrassing. It’s creepy and ferociously weird. You know what else is weird? Admitting that to your only friend. I’m surprised that Jay hasn’t bolted yet (but then again, Jay is a shit friend anyway. Who “protects” and stimulates a fight in the name of defending his friend’s honour, only to push her right into the hands of a sexy womanizer). You would think desperate!Anna would recover any semblance of sanity, but no, she lives on. In their period of segregation, Anna gets just a tad more obsessed (is that even possible?).

“Oh, my goodness, I was going to see Kaidan!”

Kaidan has his own personal get-out-of-jail-free card when it comes to Anna. When Anna remarks, “Your hair’s grown a lot” , Kaidan replies with a horrendously sexist “So has your bottom” . If my jaw didn’t drop then, then it sure dropped all over the ground when she subsequently mused:

“I wished Kaidan weren’t so perceptive, but it was true. The feminine curves that had always eluded me were finally making an appearance. Stupid tight dress”

I cannot believe she flipped the blame game onto herself. Kaidan acts like a sexist pig but because he is super sexy on the “salivate-all-over-me “ scale, he suddenly get’s a free pass.

“…I don’t hate you. I couldn’t”

Really Anna? All that cock-tease, months of depression and sexist behaviour hasn’t turned you off by now. I’ve got to give her props for her ability to leech onto Kaidan. It’s truly something.

But, guys, let’s not forget. When someone is as unfairly hot as Kaidan, one shan’t blame Anna for her one-track mind. Yes Anna, it’s totally not like the Nephilim and rest of the human race are being mistreated and abused by Demonic forces. Instead, there shall be time for sexy-Kaidan thoughts.

“I wondered what kind of sexy getup Kaidan would be wearing. Maybe Adam in a loincloth?”

She sure is imaginative for someone who was as pure as snow just months ago. The point is, desperate!Anna is a force to contend with if you’re thinking of picking this up, but if you think that’s bad, then think again.

Patti, oh Patti, you’re just full of great mothering tips aren’t you. For someone who is overly protective of her daughter (think, “I-want-to-meet-the-parents-of-this-kid-before-you-go-hanging-at-the-party” protective), Patti sure has a lifetime membership to the cool parentals club, allowing her only daughter to traipse about America in a road trip with the son of the Duke of Lust.

description

Way to go Patti. At least you threatened the boy:

“Bring her back to me safely, with her virtue intact”

Yes Patti, because all the boys within the perimeter are just cowering in fear at your warning. That ought to solve everything—never mind the fact that no adult is there to supervise.

In addition to all this craziness, this book is written with the most awkwardly contrived dialogue I have ever read in my life. What was with the overload of slang? Hip and cool as we may be, no person in their right mind possesses the entire urban-colloquial vocabulary bequeathed to this book. Can you imagine SUPER SEXY KAIDAN saying words like “buff”, “get some of that grub” and (my personal favourite) “you’ve sprung a leak” . Plus, with all the influx of British characters, it must be hard for us readers to tell them apart. NO FEAR. Every damn character from England says “luv” .

description

I’m perfectly capable remembering what characters speak with a British accent and which do not. If anything, I’m perfectly capable of understanding if it had simply been written as “love” .

And if Patti get’s a lifetime pass to the cool parentals club, then we might as well induct Papa Demon in too. I’m sorry Anna, I forgot how cool and hip your defiant demon father is (because deep down his a “good” man). Isn’t hard raising a teenage daughter in this day and age; sometimes you’ve just got to pick up some slang.

“’This little thing’—he made a triangle in the air, pointing between Kopano, Kaidan, and me—‘isn’t going to fly.’”

Fly? Fly where? I’ve never, in my life, seen anything refer to anything like that, but I suppose I’m just not as hip as Papa Demon.

Just to add the cherry-on-top, this book has an outright aversion to cursing. It’s an unwritten no-no. This just boggles my mind. Are you honestly telling me that the author, who writes some pretty NA worthy makeout scenes that exceed that PG category, can’t simply put in an honest and realistic curse word, here and there (I’m not asking for a book of profanities—I’m asking for some realism). Instead we get cheapskate replacements that just don’t mean the same. Are you honestly telling me that the spawn of the Dukes of Hell are incapable of uttering a single profanity.

We get things like:

1. “Can’t I take one flippin’ night off?”
2. “…shut your cakehole”
(What is a cakehole? Please enlighten me)
3. “Aw, cripe”, “BSing”, and “bad-a”
4.
And my personal favourite “Shut up, you stupid lush”

Anna’s father, the Duke of Substance Abuse is suddenly a lovely father figure (he supervises his daughter’s “responsible” alcohol consumption—can I hear somebody say “Father of the Year”). Your telling me that a demon/fallen angel, or whatever it is that he is, is incapable of swearing in front of his teenage daughter—not even the simplest, non-offensive curse?!?

“I was pissed—Sorry, hon. Excuse my language”

description

Are you kidding me. This makes me look like I have a potty mouth, and I can keep my language pretty PG. But I suppose this is what makes Papa Demon such a “…cute…giant demon” (Anna’s words, not mine).

The actions of some of these characters are also terribly described. They are honestly some of the most awkward conjurations that I have ever read. When you write and describe a specific action, please make it an action that people actually do in real life.

“…he tweaked my cheek with his knuckle”

What is that even meant to look like? I would freak out if anyone’s knuckle was in the vicinity of my face.

And let’s not leave Anna out of the picture. Anna likes to “[feel] pouty” . Tell me Anna, how does one feel pouty? Does this mean she has an intense urge to pout her lips, or is this a newfound sensation that I’ve yet to experience?

This book ends nice and bittersweet for dear Anna.

“We would always have our memories; the sound of each other’s laughter and the feel of each other’s lips”

Nicholas Sparks’ called; he wants his sentence back. What is this even? Their “sound of each other’s laughter” was literally limited to the four-day road trip they had. Their “feel of each other’s lips” were limited to like a handful of makeout sessions. I know that by the end of the book 8 months have passed, but if you count all the time they’ve actually spent together, it would amount to a week, tops. All the other time in between was spend brooding. What memories do you speak of?!?

This book and I will never, ever get along. There were moments where I simply wanted to DFN, but I’m a creature plagued by insatiable curiosity, and I just wanted to suffer the rest of the book and call it a day. But now I realise, I have the next two books! Let’s just say that I would have to run out of all forms of reading material (or be having a terribly masochistic day) before I pick up the next one. It is simply time-consuming, not to mention emotionally taxing to write reviews emboldened with blazing anger.

At a glance, Sweet Evil seems like another young adult paranormal romance book. And to be honest, it is... but Sweet Evil is just so much more than that! It's completely amazing and I'm pretty sure this review will not do any justice to how much praise this book truly deserves.

One of my favorite things about Sweet Evil is the world building. She took a very simple, basic concept and twisted it into something brand new and refreshing! Throughout the book, I couldn't help but think, "What if this actually happens in real life?" I've read quite a few angel/demon books, each having their own little twist in the mythology and such, but the mythology in this book just takes the cake! Originality is best, as always.

And the characters? Awesome. The sons and daughters of the Dukes make up a good chunk of the cast. Flawed and realistic, I loved each and every one of their voices. They're incredibly well-written and each came from a different background, which was interesting to learn. My favorite character was probably Kai. He is absolutely swoon-worthy in every right, and words just cannot describe. ♥

Anna, our heroine of Sweet Evil, is a very likeable character. She doesn't spend over half of the book whining about her problems, and even though she does break down when things get bad, she gets back up which is a plus in my book.

Plot wise? Sweet Evil was actually really good. It kept me engaged after it hooked me from page one! I couldn't stop reading this book and when I had to stop, Sweet Evil lingered on my mind, begging me to pick it up again. Now, that is book addiction. There was a good number of surprises that I didn't see coming, which I loved.

Now, now, last but not least, the sexy times. Prior to reading this book, I expected a fluffy read with over saturated romance but it's quite the opposite. Although I felt the romance scenes were quite fewer than I had expected the book to have, they were incredibly sensual and most definitely made my heart race. To say sparks fly between Kai and Anna is an understatement. There is a burning inferno between these two and it has no traces of insta-love! These two fit together like two puzzle pieces, and the chemistry between these two is beyond amazing. Kai and Anna are definitely one of my favorite couples of 2012.

The ending is heart wrenching (well, at least, in my opinion it was!) and in it's own way, an evil evil cliffhanger. It leaves me dying to wonder what's going to happen between our starcrossed lovers!

Sweet Evil is one of the best written love stories I have read in a long time, with a dark plot and a brilliant set of characters as well as a delectable relationship that had me rooting from the start!

You can also see this review on my blog here. :D

Where to start... Well, I'd like to say first of all, that this was disappointing. I was expecting way more out of this book from the positive reviews I've been seeing all over the net. Some of you may know that I hardly ever down a book. But this just didn't cut it for me. It had definite flaws all throughout the book that were cliche and just downright frustrating.

Photobucket

As for the history/plot in the book, I think it was the only thing that kept me reading, because it was a pretty cool take on angels and demons. The seven deadly sins are in demon form--also known as Dukes--except sloth and gluttony. Those two have been ranked under one form. And there's six addition sins in demon form as well; lying, murder, hatred, theft, adultery, and substance abuse. Also, humans have guardian angels, Nephilim can seem in them, but Anna just started out seeing a white puff of smoke beside the human since she hasn't trained for her "work." I did like that idea, it was something I hadn't read before.

The main heroine, Anna Whitt, is the daughter of Belial, Duke of Substance Abuse. And I didn't like her, just to put it bluntly. I don't even get her behavior, since she was raised like a southern Bella Swan that basically pants for drugs and alcohol. And she had no idea what was going on with who she really was. I have my limits with weak characters, and Anna met that limit within the first few chapters. She was way too...good. I know how that sounds, but it was just a headache to get through her nice bullshit. And there was a huge thing about her being a virgin. They treated that like it was a sin all on its own, which to me, isn't right. Then, it was just a cluster-fuck. Especially when she went into the bar to...work...or whatever she calls it. To me it's just being a floozy drunk.

As for Kaidan Rowe, the main hero, is a total arrogant asshole. But it's expected since his father is the Duke of Lust. So there wasn't no surprise there. He's in a band as the drummer, as that's just the icing on the cake. He's got so many fangirls, he can't even count since he's screwed them all. He's the biggest man-whore I've read about, and he didn't even try to hide it that he was since he calls it "work." I don't even know what else to say about him, other than I didn't like him one bit. He knew he was hot shit and didn't care about his reputation. I'm pretty sure his inner self was like:

Photobucket

For the other characters, Jay has to be my favorite out of the whole book. He's nice, cute, and he looks out for people when they apparently don't need looking out for. Meaning Anna. My second favorite is Kopano, son of the Duke of Wrath. Believe it or not, he was a sweetie pie. I was hoping him and Anna would share a little kiss or two. But nooooo, Anna being all hung up on Kaidan's whore-self made her go into lock down mode on her feelings for anyone. Like Bella Swan, when Kaidan left her, she didn't eat, sleep, or communicate with friends. I didn't like the twins--Marna and Ginger--or Blake, there's not really much to say about them other than Ginger was a conniving bitch and Marna was the exact opposite. Then there's Patti. I don't really feel anything for her. Because she sent her adoptive daughter on a road trip, alone, with--apparently--the hottest guy in the whole freaking universe, who also happens to be a demon. Yeah. That's an awesome way to deal with this situation, ay?

I know I've read a lot of YA books that have dealt with the use of alcohol, sex, and some drugs, but this was just full-blown drug use and alcoholism. It was making me sick even thinking about it, to be honest. It was invoking teen drinking, drugs, and sex. Big time. There was a couple of scenes where Kaidan was pushing Anna to loose her virginity. But it was to "test her limits" though. Which to me, is making me feel confused for her, seeing as he was on her one minute then pushing her away the next. There were some parts in which they almost did go all the way, but Kaidan was like "oh I don't want to take your virginity in a ratty motel room." like that's stopped you before.... But it's always "make an exception for the good girl who's got to save man-kind." And to tell the truth, I almost expected Kaidan to push her too far.

Photobucket

There was one part in the book where Anna and a bunch of Kaidan's friends were at an after party after one of Kaidan's shows, and they were drinking and playing truth or dare. Kaidan dared Anna to kiss Kopano, causing Miss Anna to knock Kaidan over in his chair. She was just about to leave when one of the twins was like, "Kaidan! Get over here!" for an apology.

I heard him approach through the long blades of grass, Marna and Jay must have walked away, because when I looked up, it was only the two of us. He stared down and nudged an old tree stump with his foot.
"Sorry," he said, concentrating on giving the stump another good thump.
Wow. An apology. I felt myself soften.
"I'm sorry, too, about the whole chair-flipping thing."

Photobucket

Am I the only one who thinks Kaidan deserved a good kick in his ass? If I were Anna, I would have kick him where the sun don't shine, and laughed about it. I hate it when this happens, where the hero does something stupid and caused the heroine to feel shitty, then he apologizes like a 6-year-old does when he pisses outside of the training toilet.

I don't know if I'll read the next books, it's highly unlikely. The book ended off in a weird cliffhanger though, and it left me like, "That's fucking it? That's the end of the book?" So yeah, I don't know.

This brilliantly written book had a dark story about angels, demons, nephilims, and a big twisty prophecy that put me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Although the two main characters' angsty love was extremely tiring to read, but the book's rapid pace and suspenseful content kept me reading. I am now very curious to know more.

first read: October 3 & 4, 2015
first reread: September 11 - 17, 2016

first reread review: I actually enjoyed it a lot more the second time around. And I am going straight into book 2! yay!

original review: Not sure of a rating....its hovering somewhere between 3 and 4....so lets just say 3.5 and call it good.

I am not really sure on a review. My feelings for this book are all jumbled up inside my head at the moment. I didn't love this book. I didn't find it amazing, I didn't find myself wrapped up in it....to me it was just a really entertaining story. I enjoyed this book for the story it was. I liked how different the characters were, but they were certainly flawed. The only 2 characters I really found myself drawn to were Kaidan and John Grey. I liked them all for different reasons, but those were were by far my favorites. Kaidan was a total asshole though, and I am interested to see how this story as a whole plays out.

As interesting as I found the concept of this story to be, I found myself confused on more than one occasion. I don't really like being confused while reading - books are for enjoying and relaxing, not for being confused and getting stressed but you think you've missed something, or just can't figure out what is going on.

Like I said though, I definitely enjoyed this enough to read on in the series and figure out what the end game is. I didn't like the ending of this book, it was sad, and it left me wanting. I don't think it will be too long before I find myself with book 2 in hand.

This was highly addicting. I kept picking it up, planning on only reading a chapter or two, then realizing I had read 100 pages. I just couldn't ever put it down. I really like the mythology. It made the story more unique from other demon/angel books I've read. The main characters were nothing special and kind of the typical YA tropes but I still found myself caring about them and liking them. I loved the side characters! They all had a lot of depth. Overall this was a very addicting story and I'm excited to pick up the sequel.

I love Wendy Higgins's take on the nephilieum genre. Having each person belonging to a sin - which isn't limited to the seven deadly sins and having to work for their fathers.
I love Belial (Anna's father) he reminds me of a tough biker dude with a soft spot for Anna and her mother.
Overall I'm definitely on team Kaiden! I do like Kopano as well but he has nothing on Kaiden

"I was in love with him. And there wasn't a thing on earth, in heaven, or in hell that could have stopped me."

Can I start this review by saying that I'm totally fangirling right now? I love it so much! And I therefore conclude that Kaidan Rowe is my new book boyfriend!

Oh my God.. It's so hard to think of better words to describe my feelings for this book. First off, I really had high expectations with it since it has high ratings here in GR. Guess what? It actually exceeded my expectations. I was completely blown away!

I love the premise and how Ms. Wendy Higgins created such a brilliant and challenging spiritual concept about angels and demons. What struck me most was how the author also pointed some Biblical views on it. I love her ideas and how she thoroughly made a good research about the fallen angels and other creations. Isn't she perfect?

What's even great about this book is its unpredictability. The plot of this book surprises me a lot. It's intense! Ms. Higgins' writing style is really hands down beautiful!

Another thing that I particularly love about this book is the characters. Kaidan Rowe! Omg! Can you please stop being HOTT?! I love the bad-boy image of this guy. The one who is totally capable of giving me the feels. And Anna Whitt-- well, I really love her character. She's not an annoying, angsty lead like other YA female characters. Her sweetness and kindness definitely win my heart I could hug her! Apart from Kaidan and Anna, I also love the other Neph-- Kope, Marna, Ginger, and Blake. They're badass characters!

As a whole, this book is phenomenal. I highly recommend this one to every YA fan who loves Nephilim stories. P.S. I'm still in a book hangover right now. Couldn't stop thinking about this book. Need to move on to the second!

After I finished my first angel book, I’m not interest much in angel. I want to read about evil and demon. I search goodreads and found.. Sweet Evil

The demon/nephilim world of this book is so creative and I adore it. The sons and the daughters of the Dukes of demon. They have to do the wicked jobs, influence humans to do the bad things. They are sinful..

They are also fascinating.. at the same time.

[image error][image error]

The Characters

I love Jay. He is funny and cute. I’m surprised that Jay isn’t Anna love interest, involve with the love triangle. Anna has broken heart, she should have friend who can make her relax. Jay is a great friend and I want to have friend like him. ♥
……………………….

‘ I was in love with him. And there wasn’t a thing on earth, in heaven, or in hell that could have stopped me.’

It’s quite hard that I will enjoy goody-goody heroine as much as this. Mostly goody heroines I found are dull, flat, and boring, but that’s not Anna Whitt.

Anna’s character is so realistic. I felt like as if I’m her. I felt everything through her. Yup.. I’m shy when she’s shy, thinking of Kaidan. I hurt when she hurt, heartbroken. Even cried when she cried, break down.
Everything felt real…

It seems like she’s whiny. Nah.. she has motivations for her actions. Indeed, Anna is sweet, innocent, and brave. She is not afraid to do the right thing when it’s against the virtue, and another thing that I admired about her is.. she will never hate Kai...

She can touch his soul.. She knows that Kai is good inside, after she spent times with him in the trip. Although Kai broke her heart several times, but she will never hate him. She knows it is dangerous to be close together. She knows Kai push her away for protecting her. She is strong enough to move on her life. She loves him so much and it makes me love Kai so much, as well.
Anna is Lovely and AWESOME.. ♥

[image error][image error]

Kaidan Rowe.. Yummy Kai.. the hero who I want to drag out of the book and be mine. Oops.. he is Anna’s. lol.. Kai is mysterious and dangerous. The son of the Duke of Lust, sexy, delicious, and dark.

I love Kai.. he has to do the immoral job that he’s never wanted since he is the son of Demon of Lust. I want to throw Kai’s father out off the cliff. Seriously. Lol!

‘ I’d always know he’d been willing to die for me. Nobody could take those things away.’

I know Kai cares about Anna so much.
I utterly love Kaidan so much like Anna does.

When I first knew what job Kai is, I was shocked. WOW!! wow!! WOW!! ‘ this is your job ? ’ *gasp*

Kai’s character is unforgettable.

[image error][image error]

The characters are solid. Awesome build and develop. They are so realistic. I can touch how hottt Kai is. I have sense of involvement with Anna. Their chemistry is steamy and AMAZING. I’m really fun with reading this book!

Even the secondary characters are interesting all of them. Kope, Ginger, Marna, Blake, and the others. Demons…

I want to learn more about them in the next book.

The climax of this book is one of the best climaxes I’ve ever found in the books. I was hooked!

This book totally brew me away…

Kai and Anna’s forbidden love is so addictive.
They are so perfect for each other. ♥
They are my very favorite star-crossed lover.

This book is so my cup of tea… I want My Kai!!! ♥

I chose to read this book as a recommendation from twitter. I asked this simple question... "Can someone recommend a book with a heck of a good romance?".... Sweet Evil got the majority of votes, so Sweet Evil I decided to read!

Now I feel that a thank you is in order. Thank you to everyone on twitter that tweeted me about this AMAZING book! You were all right! Incredibly right! This was definitely my kind of read!

I got the romance I craved, the ever so swoon worthy Kaidan to pine over, and a story that sent my heart through an emotional ride like no other! Sweet Evil has definitely earned a top star rating from me!

The characters were unforgettable! Each and every one of them! I've got a few favorites! That's for sure! We've got the ever so caring best friend Jay, the terrible twosome Marna and Ginger (gotta love em) and of course the unforgettable incredibly irresistible Son of Lust a.k.a. Kaidan Rowe! The second I read the words "roadtrip with the son of lust" (insert goofy smile here) I thought to myself.. Oh.. this is going to be GOOD!!!!! And good it was indeed! Now that.. was my kind of roadtrip!

I can't gush about this book enough! It's definitely one of the best I've read this year! One that I'm going to be obsessing over and definitely recommending to EVERYONE I know! My only hope is that we get more Kaidan Rowe soon!! This book blogger is SO ready for more!

Sweet Evil gets 5 AWESOME stars from me! Trust me when I say this....This book will keep you reading way past your bedtime! ;)
