You’ll be gasping for air in this seafaring romance by popular author and Christy Award nominee MaryLu Tyndall. Baltimore’s Cassandra Channing will do anything to provide for her family—even if it means hiring the town rogue as a privateer. Luke Heaton is a handsome rake with a tortured past who is blackmailed by the British into selling supplies to their ships just off the coast. Cassandra and Luke’s worlds collide as they are drawn into danger, secrets, romance, and war. But when the British begin to bombard Fort McHenry, how long can they protect their love—and each other?
The professional endorsement on the cover of MaryLu Tyndall’s latest novel reads, “Swashbuckling, swordplay and sweetness.” There isn’t a whole lot to add to that, but I will try.
I can always expect one of three things when I read a Tyndall novel: action/adventure, romance, faith and the sea. Okay, so of course that last one was thrown in there for fun more than anything. But it is true. The story is crafted in such a way that the faith element is very organic to the story. It isn’t slapped on at the end or left for the reader to wonder, it is an intricate part of the story that never preaches, but always ministers.
Tyndall knows how to craft the rogue hero and I will admit to being partial to her “bad boy” hero types. I think her heroines gravitate there as well. The tension and chemistry in the romantic scenes is enough to soothe the heart of any hopeless romantic. And the “Surrender the Dawn” is not be found without the action of the sea, and the adventures of a privateer against the backdrop of the War of 1812.
From stem to stern, this book was enjoyable, a great read and a welcome diversion. Tyndall has crafted such a niche for herself and a voice in this genre, that I don’t see her going anywhere anytime soon. And may there be mutiny if she does!
This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the author for providing my copy as an influencer.
I just love a good, swashbucklin’ adventure set on the high seas! Recently, I’ve found a gem of an author in MaryLu Tyndall. While Surrender the Dawn doesn’t spend too much time ship-side, there’s still plenty of adventure, tension, and romance packed within these pages. Hold onto your hats—there are rough waters ahead! But rest assured that all will come to a beautiful and satisfying conclusion with Captain Tyndall at the helm!
Cassandra Channing was a really strong character that I grew to respect and admire. She had a pretty big independent streak in her, but if it weren’t for that, her family would’ve suffered much more than they did. Cassandra is what held them together. After getting to know Luke Heaton in Surrender the Heart and again seeing him briefly in Surrender the Night, I was really excited when this book came out. He was a deep character that needed his own story! The things he hid so well behind a smiling face and amiable manner in Surrender the Heart were laid bare in this newest book, Surrender the Dawn. I loved watching Luke grow and change!
With realistic characters, complex situations, and heart-stopping moments, Surrender the Dawn was a very easy read for me. From the first pages, my attention was grabbed and I flew through the book. One of my favorite scenes is probably when Luke and Mr. Crane both had dinner with Cassandra and her family. Oh boy! The banter and insinuations that bounced back and forth had me laughing out loud!
Not only did the storyline and characters hold my attention, but MaryLu’s writing style made it easy to get lost in the story. From the difficulty for a woman to hold a business position to the attack on Fort McHenry, she vividly brought the scenes to life and transported me back in time. And besides a few heated kisses, Luke’s problem with drinking, and a comment or two of loose women in the taverns that Luke visits, there is nothing I need warn readers about!
For those who have read the first two in this series, Surrender the Dawn is a wonderful and satisfying conclusion. Though it is kind of sad to say goodbye to this fun cast of characters! I am really looking forward to reading more of MaryLu’s wonderful adventures in the near future.
Luke Heaton is a drunkard, gambler and womanizer. He is bitter about his parents' death, but as he promised his mother, he is taking care of his only brother. Once enslaved aboard a British ship with Noah and Marianne Brenin, his hatred of the British has not waned. When the lovely and sophisticated Cassandra Channing offers him a proposition, Luke finds himself agreeing, even though it means giving up his drinking and gambling ways.
Cassandra Channing is at her wit's end. With the men in her family away at war, the responsibility of her mother and two young sisters has fallen on her shoulders. Her only hope is to sink her money into a privateer, hoping that profits will abound. She didn't, however, count on every captain on the coast laughing at her suggestion and pushing her way because of her gender. Abhorred by the idea that she may have to marry a Mr Crane for her family's well-being, she chooses to trust the town rogue Luke Heaton.
But is Luke simply a rogue or is there something more sinister at play? Cassandra will go great lengths to find out.
My Rating: 4 Stars
Poetic, fresh, and inviting are all words that I use to describe MaryLu Tyndall's writing. She is a master storyteller, weaving words into pictures. I find her writing style very poetic and visual. Each chapter and scene is written in such a way that you will find it hard to put down.
This is the third book in her Surrender to Destiny series and I loved how this book and the second book take place at virtually the same time. She weaves the characters from all three books into this one. If you haven't read the other two, this one can be read as a stand alone. However, you will want to read the first two to be in the know on some of her references.
The Christian message in this book is refreshing and clear. I highly recommend it to readers in all walks of life.
Many thanks to Barbour Publishing for sending me a copy to review.
As usual I picked up the last book in a series without reading the earlier ones, but it wasn't hard to follow. Set during the war of 1812, there is plenty of room for adventure, danger and excitement. Luke is a fabulous character and shows nice depth of personality and emotion. Cassandra is a little childish but a good, strong character even if you occasionally want to strangle her. Side characters, some of whom are obviously featured in earlier books, fill in the story nicely although there are a few side plots that I wasn't happy with their resolution or lack thereof. The Christian slant is sometimes a bit overbearing and in my opinion takes on too much resolution, it still fits well and is persistent without being preachy. All in all it was a great historical adventure that rallied up my patriotism a bit, just in time for the upcoming 4th of July! I have a feeling that the other books would be just as fun.
Loved this book...it was a perfect ending to this trilogy! I also finished on the 4th of July and it was awesome to read the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner in a whole new light. Great job, Marylu!
Cassandra Channing is a Baltimore society belle who is trying to support her mother and sisters. She decides to invest in Luke Heaton's privateer ship, renamed Destiny, in the hope that his prizes will generate enough income that she won't be forced into marrying the detestable Mr. Crane.
Luke Heaton is the town rogue, a drinker, a gambler, and a womanizer. But for Cassandra, he's willing to change ...
Set against the backdrop of the War of 1812, the Surrender to Destiny series brings handsome, brave heroes, courageous, beautiful women, and exciting naval battles together in a perfect mix for the reader.
This book definitely works better when you've read the other 2 first; however, it's still great on it's own. While it it's a fictional book, it still provides some great insight into the War of 1812, a lot of which I wasn't fully aware of; so, I now have a new interest on this portion of American history. Misunderstandings abound however the author for a great job on ensuring that they were corrected and resolved. Overall, a great read & a great series!
Cassandra has to care for her family even if that means hiring the town rogue to help her. Luke also must provide for his family even after he has made many mistakes in the past. Can either one of them win against the British attacks in 1814?
Surrender the Dawn is a gripping and intense read beginning with the first scene. It is a special book that tells of the struggles and determination of Americans in 1814 as Great Britain puts forth every effort to regain the new American states and territory. A very enjoyable read.
I always love the spiritual theme Marylu writers and applaud her from never compromising. This was so good book over and it ended beautifully , my complaint is that some of the plot in the storu6
This was an interesting series - not necessarily easy reads, but books that get to the heart of the matter of surrendering a life to Jesus Christ. All of the main characters in this series - either the male or female struggled with some past hurt and letting it go. Very good series.
A nice Christian novel with love, War, jealous warriors. I just was wondering how the story would read as a single book. Yea it would be a very long book but it would have been nice to see the characters interact more.
I enjoyed this inspirational and historical romance. The characters were believable and I learned some things about the War of 1812. Previously, I didn't know about privateers.
The third and final book of this series opens with Cassandra dealing with being the bread winner for her family as her father is dead and her brothers are off fighting the war. If she does not find a way to provide she will be forces to marry a man she has no interest in. So she tries to invest the last of the family’s money into privateering. The problem is no one will invest with her because it’s considered bad luck to have a woman involved. Luke to those who has read the past books of this series was the first mate of Noah from the first book. But he was fired due to his drinking and gambling. He now finds himself the owner of a boat through a winning card game but its in bad shape and he needs money to turn it into a privateering ship. Cassandra soon finds herself partnering with Luke in hopes of keeping her family from ending up on the street. Luke also finds himself fighting his own demons and he works to prove to her and his friends that he will not fail. Couple this with the final battle of the war of 1812 and your in store for quite the adventure with this book. Will these two find love as well as faith and hope when dawn arrives?
M.L Tyndall does it again! Towards the end of the 2nd book we get a glimpse of this story. Cassandra is a woman who want to trust others to help her but feels she can trust no one. She knows she can not fail to keep her family safe but is not willing to marry someone she does not love to do it. Luke appears to be a drunk and not a gentleman but we soon find out he has a younger brother he has been taking care of since he was a baby. We also find out his parents died and he blames himself. Even though these two seem like total opposites they soon are attracted to each other. As the story unravels Luke finds himself a trader to his nation in order to keep those he loves most safe.
Series Review
The neat thing about this book is it over laps a few scenes from the 2nd book which I really liked. One scene I remember feeling like I was missing a piece of the story and that piece was filled in here in this book. Very well written and a great ending to a series that taught me a lot about the war of 1812 as well as three wonderful love stories. I highly recommend you go back and read the first two books before picking this one up as they are highly intertwined together.
Book 1 Surrender the Heart
Book 2 Surrender the Night
The other surprise for me with this series is my favorite book of the three was the middle book. Usually I find myself liking the first or the last the best. I love how the author takes history, Christianity, suspense and romance and writes such wonderful books. I can’t wait for what she writes next!
True to her trademark ‘swashbuckling romance’, SURRENDER THE DAWN is set on the high-seas, and deep in the heart of 1814 Baltimore. Cassandra and Luke are two fantastic characters with deep flaws, emotional scars, baggage and plans for how they think their lives ‘should’ go. It reminded me of the verse in Proverbs that says: “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Naturally, when we do what we think we should do, that’s when things go wrong…and wrong…and even more wrong, which winds Cassandra up in the custody of the British Navy, and Luke being arrested for treason. But so often when we come to the end of ourselves, that’s where we discover a God who’s been trying to get our attention all along! It’s only when we have nothing left that we finally allow God to have control. This book consistently receives 4 and 5 stars on Goodreads.com and reading it, I can see why. It’s a gem, and thoroughly enjoyable. I especially liked the end of chapter cliffhangers that left me furiously clicking buttons on my Nook to find out what happens next! Being British, I delighted in taking umbrage at the frequent references to the tyrannical British Empire—probably the same part of me that wants to fly my Union Jack on 4th July! And enjoyed the fact that this story was set at a time when so much was going on. Two nations were at war, the upstart Americans seeking the freedom to govern themselves against the greatest military power in the world at the time (thank you very much!). Violent content: Wartime novel. Lots of cannon and missile fire, ship vs. ship, plus the recounting of the attack on Baltimore’s Fort. Nothing gratuitous, just a lot of nail-biting guns and swords pointed at people. Bad language: I noticed the word ‘bugger’, though whether you consider it bad language may depend on what side of the pond you were born on. Let’s just say I’d have been spanked if I’d used that word growing up. MaryLu Tyndall is a historical Christian fiction author well worth your attention. You can find her on Facebook, and her blog at http://crossandcutlass.blogspot.com/
Finally read the last book in "Surrender to Destiny" series "Surrender the Dawn", MaryLu Tyndall has brought this book to a fantastic thrilling end! Cassandra Channing, a determined woman, who tries to find a way to support her family without marriage, though finds it extremely hard for a woman as herself to hire a privateer, to only finds herself she hires the town rogue. Luke Heaton, the town rogue, who spends his time drinking and gambling, because he carries around an enormous guilt from his past which feeds into his insecurities and traps him in a cycle of uneasiness, that is until Cassandra walks into his life.
Reading through "Surrender the Dawn" this books showed me between two characters how one did not believe anymore that God existed and with the other that God basically left like a few other family members left. Luke has grown up through life with nothing going right for him. His parent's died by Indians burning their home down of who they ministered to, though him and his younger brother made it out of the home. Now tending to his brother who has a disease called Rickets, which crippled the boy. Luke doesn't blame God for all that has happen, just can't believe He exists in a world he is living. Cassandra has grew up in a family where her parents were unhappy in their marriage leaving her to run wild as she pleased. She became independent with a hint of temper and rebellion within herself. When her father now long dead and her brothers off fighting in a war, she felt it was her duty to take care of her family. She starts to feel abandoned by her father and brothers, which she puts blame on God, which she feels He has left her as well. Read and see how God works through the two lives and their relationship grows. How Luke just didn't see how God could help him through his life, that you can't do things on your own strength, and with Cassandra that God never abandoned her, that she just needed to allow Him to guide her through life. Plus this book is filled with lots of action, adventure, drama, and a love story that truly made me want to keep reading more to see what happened next!
A superb book. Characters with flaws and sins in their lives, characters that need redemption as we all do. This is the third in the series and I would suggest reading the first two books as there were many things that alluded to what happened in the earlier books.
Luke Heaton was the caretaker for his brother John ever since his parents were murdered. Being they were missionaries Luke turned his back on God and he blamed himself for not saving his parents. John had rickets and needed a brace on his leg which added to Luke's idea of why someone innocent would suffer. He turned his back on God and lived a life against everything his parents believed in. He was a gambler, womanizer and he liked his rum.
Cassandra Channing has lost her father to the war and her two brothers are missing. She is determined to take care of her family without depending on a man. With her families last thousand dollars she is trying to buy shares with a privateer. It is believed a woman involved with ships brings bad luck and none will accept her. After being rescued by Luke Heaton, the town rogue, he suggests joining him. He has the ship but needs the money to fix it up. Smelling the rum on him she rejects his offer until she sees no other way to help her family.
Cassie has lost her faith as well since her fathers death and with her brothers gone. Her overbearing and overly emotional mother wants her to marry Mr. Crane. Her mother misses having all the money to spend. She has two smaller sisters as well.
The romance story is enjoyable as Cassie struggles with feelings for a man who rumors have pegged as a womanizer. The story is more though, you go out on a boat with privateers, see choices of going against country or saving a brother who is most precious to you, the war of rejecting God when you know deep down you need him, a woman fighting to save her family and a man who will do anything to trick that woman into marrying him. The historical part of the books is fantastic as well.
Surrender the Dawn is the third book in the Surrender to Destiny series by MaryLu Tyndall and it didn't disappoint.
The war of 1812 is still raging and Cassandra Channing must find a way to support herself, her mother and two sisters when her father and brothers leave to fight the battle. They have not heard from them in months and have no idea if they are living or dead. As with all girls during that time period, it seems the only solution is to get married to a rich man. Fortunately, Cassandra is her own woman and refuses to bow to her mother's wishes.
Along comes Luke Heaton, the captain of a broken down ship and a gambling, booze-addicted, womanizing privateer. When Cassandra offers him enough money to fix his ship, he sees this as an opportunity to redeem himself in the eyes of society. Not to mention the fact that he gets to help a beautiful damsel in distress! Things go well until his ship is captured with his only brother on board. Now Luke is being blackmailed by the British to provide not only food supplies but ammunition to fight against his own people. When Cassandra starts to suspect he is up to no good and running off with her money, she tries to catch him in the act - only to be caught up in a massive British invasion.
Arrgh! I love me a good pirate book! Well...not a pirate exactly, but close enough. This book had it all and was the perfect ending to this series. Tyndall managed to include the characters from the other two books and it was wonderful to see how she wrapped everything up and tied it all together.
The only thing that surprised me was the same story line was used in regards to the "nefarious suitor" who will do anything to win Cassandra. He was exactly the same character with a different name, from her second book in this series, Surrender the Night. He was creepier than the other guy though, so take it as you will, it doesn't detract from the book and I still give it 5 out of 5 stars! It was way too fun to be given anything less.
Surrender the Dawn… By MaryLu Tyndall With her father and brothers gone from home, Cassandra Channing is taking care of her family. She wants to invest her money into something reliable, but no one wants to take investments from a woman. That is until Luke Heaton comes into the picture. Luke won a ship while gambling and he needs money to restore it, but with his drinking and gambling, can he be trustworthy? Will Cassandra turn all of her money over to Luke for the ship fixer upper? And it doesn’t help matters when Cassandra and Luke start having feelings for each other as they spend time together. Read this wonderful historical story to find out these answers. In Surrender the Dawn, MaryLu Tyndall writes another page-turning historical romance. The unique characters were so real I felt like I knew them personally. And I love that she so professionally weaves the characters from all three book together in this last book in the series. I will miss reading about these charming and fun characters. This is my first series by MaryLu to read, and I am hooked! I love the passion she has for writing historical fiction, and the way that passion comes to life in her writing. Another thing I almost forgot is the message in her stories of the importance of living Godly lives. Of course these characters are just like people today, they struggle daily with difficult issues, causing them to turn their backs on God, but MaryLu so consciously teaches through her writing that when we let God control our lives, things are not perfect for us, but God will be there for us, carrying us through our difficulties. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy Christian Fiction of any kind. You will not be disappointed in either book in this series! A huge thank you to the author MaryLu for providing me a copy of this book to read and review. I was not expected or required to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are my own honest opinions.
M.L. Tyndall’s “Surrender the Dawn” is a wonderful read filled with lots of seafaring action, suspense and intrigue, romance and the struggle to believe in God because of tragedy. Cassandra is trying to provide for her family: her mother and two sisters. Taking their last bit of money, she wants to invest in a privateer but no one will take on a woman investor. Luke Heaton just won a ship gambling. It is a broken-down vessel that needs lots of work and he has no money to fix her up or he would endeavor to become a privateer. Destiny brings these two together and it seems to be a perfect business arrangement.
Cassandra has a difficult time trusting Luke because he is a drunk, a gambler and a womanizer. She is also wounded spiritually by her father’s death. But Luke actually makes strides in changing his ways and has some success as a privateer. And it doesn’t hurt that her heart flutters whenever she sees him or hears his name. So, when her money is stolen, Luke saves the day once again, endearing himself even further.
Luke, on the other hand, feels that he is worthless. He feels responsible for his parents’ deaths. He believes that he is so far beneath Cassandra that he shouldn’t even entertain thoughts of a future with her. But he can’t get her out of his mind. When his circumstances change for the worst, he struggles mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Will both come to terms with the fact that their struggles should bring them closer to God? I absolutely loved how this story is intertwined with the previous novel in the series. Although this can be read as a standalone novel, it is more enjoyable when you already know the supporting characters. Also, the dramatization of the inspiration for the Star Spangled Banner brought tears to my eyes. The plot led me to discover deeper ideas that I used in prayer as well. So, I am praying that Jesus will continue to give M.L. Tyndall ideas for books and that her writing will reach people for Christ.
Loved this book based on the war of 1812 between the British and America. A boy turned man at a young age, Luke Heaton, is desperate to provide for his infant brother after his missionary parents are killed blames himself for everything bad that comes his way, including his parents death. He turns from God and tries to muddle his way through life when he gets his one break on a gambling win...a rundown ship. He needs money. Cassandra also needs money to provide for her mother and two younger sister when her father is killed in the war and her older brothers are missing from the war as well. She invests her last $1000 to Luke when no other respectable pirateer will let a woman owe shares in a shipping arrangement.
Cassandra is also being pursued by a "respectable gentlemen" who wants to court her and help with the family financial situation, but she wants a choice in the man she marries. As she comes to trust Luke and his ability to provide for her, her heart is opened to him. Luke tries to avoid Cassandra even though his heart leads him to her because he believes he isn't worthy of her.
War brings about some unexpected risks as John, is taken prisoner of a British war ship and Luke is forced to be a traitor to his country by bringing supplies in exchange for his brother's life. When Cassandra wants to prove that Luke is worthy of her trust she hides on his ship and finds him bringing goods to the British. She confronts him and then finds herself a prisoner as well. She meets John and learns of the why behind Luke's treasonous acts.
Luke is really blaming himself now with both people he loves in danger. He then finds himself outed by one of his crewmen and is thrown in prison. this is when the British attack Baltimore. He gets a miracle and a change of heart toward God and helps defend the Fort.
SURRENDER THE DAWN, book three in the Surrender to Destiny series from M.L. Tyndall, once again takes you on a sea-faring adventure of action and romance.
Cassandra Channing is determined to provide for her family after the loss of her father and brothers to the War of 1812. She takes the family coffers and tries to invest in a privateer, but no one welcomes a woman as a business partner. That is, except Luke Heaton. Cassandra struggles with her decision to invest in the town rogue. His reputation precedes him and it is far from upstanding or gentlemanly. But, Cassandra has no choice. Her family is in debt and she is looking for a miracle. So, deciding to risk it all, she becomes partners with Luke. She soon realizes her heart will never be the same.
Luke Heaton looks at a business arrangement with the beautiful Cassandra Channing as just the thing he needs to turn his life around. Wanting nothing more than a chance to start over, he welcomes Ms. Channing’s wiliness to invest in him and his ship. Of course, his heart too quickly becomes attached to the woman he knows he will ultimately disappoint.
Highs and lows, losses and struggles, Luke’s bad luck continues to assault him, while Cassandra finds herself falling even further in love with the man that has broken her heart.
M.L. Tyndall does not disappoint. Her novels always captive the reader with adventure, drama, love gained and love lost. I have enjoyed all of her books immensely. The only tiniest bit of regret I had was that the hero and heroine did not have as much interaction as I would’ve liked. Most of the book is spent with them apart, longing for each other. Other than that, I was once again charmed by the rich characters and colorful setting that make up a Tyndall book. Good job, Marylu. You’ve done it again.
I loved this novel! MaryLu Tyndall has a way of drawing the reader into the story, from the first page. The reader will feel so many emotions while reading this book. The female main character is a strong willed gal with strength beyond even her own comprehension. This book is about how we grow through our trials. It is a book of learning about oneself as well as giving others a chance to prove their strength as well.
The romance in this novel is slow to reveal itself to the main characters. It keeps the reader smiling that knowing smile.
I love the storyline. I felt like I was in the story, feeling the pain, love, fear and gratitude to out Heavenly Father as he shows the power of love.
Even though this is the third in the Surrender to Destiny series, it stands on its own. The reader does not need to read the first two books in the series to know what is going on. Although once the reader is finished Surrender the Dawn, they will hunger for the other two books in the series.
As history buff, I was drawn to this author by the fact that her books are historical fiction. As a Christian, I drawn to this authors because her books have a bit of romance written from a Christian viewpoint. I stayed a loyal reader of this author because I loved her style of writing as well as the intriguing stories she told.
Although this book may be considered a romance book as well as historical fiction, it is not your normal harlequin kind of romance. It is real life kind of romance. It is romance with ups and downs and confusion. Real life kinda romance. The kind that is slow coming and slower for the two involved to realize they love each other.
Needing a way to support her mother and sisters, Cassandra Channing invests her last dollar in privateering, with the town rogue Luke Heaton as captain of the Destiny. Luke’s past hasn’t been exemplary, and Cassandra knows trusting him is a risk, but with no other man willing to work for a woman, she doesn’t have a lot of choice.
Luke is well aware of his short-comings, but for Cassandra, he’s willing to change—even going so far as to forfeit drinking while at sea. But when a British ship’s captain takes his handicapped little brother, he’s forced into using the Destiny to deliver supplies to their ship. His actions threaten not only his life and the lives of his crew, but his budding relationship with the beautiful heroine, who is unaware that Luke is being blackmailed.
Set amidst the War of 1812, Surrender the Dawn is a beautiful tale of love, trust, forgiveness, and the danger of judging others, whose stories we do not really know. It’s another Tyndall treasure, and a worthy addition to the Surrender to Destiny series. I’m loving Tyndall’s trek onto land, and finding that this author doesn’t necessarily need the expanse of the ocean to create an outstanding storyline…but she does put it to excellent use!
Loved the dawn scene with a famous historical figure…a special treat for the reader to discover on her own.
I highly recommend this book, but that’s a given when MaryLu Tyndall is the author. Expect to find unexpected humor, sweet romance, suspense, and spiritual enlightenment—each is included in Surrender the Dawn.
I think I'm in love. His name is Luke Heaton, and he is.....amazing. Gorgeous. Courageous. Cares for his family. Strong. Protective. Man of his word. Sweet. And just a tiny bit of a rogue ;) The upside is I have gotten to spend time with him each day for the last 5 days. The downside is he is a fictional character :( However, I got to know him during a fabulous book that I highly recommend for anyone who wants a little pirate adventure, a little romance, and a little shot of patriotism.
Cassandra Channing is the only hope for her mother and two younger sisters after her father's passing. Cassandra takes a huge risk with all the money they have left in the world and funds a privateer ship captained by the rogue Luke Heaton. Luke will hunt down British ships, plunder them, sell the plunder at various ports on the way home and split the profits amongst his crew and Miss Channing. The most unexpected prize from all the plundering is the love that grows between Luke and Cassandra. While they each have struggles with God, they each question His love for them and how He could be interested in their daily lives. Throughout the book, different characters share parts of their walk with God and problems they have had and how their relationship with God has grown and changed because of it. There is also an appearance by a fun historic character near the end that might cause a certain song to get stuck in the reader's head-at least it did in mine! A fun, romantic, encouraging read starring the incorrigible Luke Heaton-you should definitely give it a try ;)
I thoroughly enjoyed another tender romance set on the high seas by MaryLu Tyndall. Surrender the Dawn is an excellent example of this author’s talent for telling a fast-paced and romantic tale. She always manages to fill her stories with realistically flawed characters who live and breathe and that you begin to root for from the very first page.
Cassandra Channing is a head-strong heroine who has to care for her family of younger sisters and her mother who prefers to bury her head in the sand, or in this case a bottle of laudanum. Cassandra takes a huge chance when she invests the last of their family money with a privateer sailor, Luke Heaton. She figures she has to take a chance or the family will starve.
Everyone is outraged that Cassandra would trust their few last dollars with the town rogue who has a penchant for the rum bottle. And her mother continues to push Cassandra into the arms of a man who has the money to support them.
But things seem to be going well when Luke makes good on Cassandra’s investment. That is until he’s forced into treason against his fellow Americans in The War of Independence. The tables turn quickly and the stakes get higher.
What I love about MaryLu Tyndall’s stories is the real struggles her characters face that people face today, such as alcohol addiction in the face of great stress. I also love the families she sets her heroes and heroines in. Altogether a delightful fun read.
