Taming a Highland Devil

Rate this book
Laird Magnus Sutherland loves women. His prowess in the bedchamber has earned him the name Devil of Dunrobin, but no woman has ever stirred his heart. Magnus needs to provide his clan with an heir, which is the only reason he agrees to marry the neighboring chieftain’s sister. When his betrothed arrives, he discovers the chieftain has two sisters. If Magnus must bind himself to one woman, he intends to discover which is best suited to be his wife, for he wants more than a body to plant his seed. He wants a mate for life. There are three reasons Lady Effie Reay refuses to vie for Laird Sutherland’s affections…For one, she is thirty-two and would surely lose a competition to her beautiful, younger sister. Secondly, Laird Sutherland is a well-reputed rake, and she holds no desire to wed another faithless man. And thirdly, the sight of him makes her tingle, shiver and ache. Will Effie be successful in thwarting Magnus’ advances, or will her body succumb to a temptation that can only lead to heartbreak?

Well this was.... hmmm... don't know hahaha

I was expecting it to be a good, safe, short choice about HIGHLANDER!
Obviously my expectations were high... too high...

"He’d built up his stamina over the years which had earned him the name Devil of Dunrobin."

The book started... well i didn't mind the start so much (his whoring with maids) as i found really disgusting what followed.

When his betrothed arrives, he discovers the chieftain has two sisters. One is in the bloom to deliver him lots of his babies and the other sister is way beyond to deliver him his babies but he can't choose in the beginning so he decides to ... well try out both of them in his bed chambers :)

“I just turned two and thirty. I’m hardly dead.”
“Do ye still bleed?”

description

The younger one goes first and she isn't virgin (because she heard his famous reputation, yes you know which reputation, and didn't want to disappoint him......... YEAH RIGHT.....), but if she was he would have waited for their marriage. So the younger one TAKES IT OUT and does the job!

Now comes the older one... well she doesn't actually because she hides from him because she knows she could love him easily and she doesn't want to ruin her sister's marriage because she already had a family but lost it in war.

But he is very interested in the older one so he tries but all he gets is NO as an answer.

One day Effie (the older one) realizes that Vanna (younger one) is having an afair with someone so to keep Magnus from Vanna's room she tells him that maybe she is interested to be his wife.

I can not believe but I actually started to like the story from this part ....

“Do ye fear me?”
“I fear the wanting of ye.”

............

“Ye asked me if I feared ye, and the truth is, I do. I fear trusting ye. I fear what will happen to my heart if I offer it to ye. But I’m no coward.” She poked him. “As terrifying as the prospect is to me, I let ye in. I allowed ye to touch my heart. I allowed ye to kiss my scars.”
He snorted and kept his eyes guarded. “Ye have no scars. Your
skin is flawless.” “Ye are wrong. My scars are here.” She pressed his hand against her heart."

............

"My enemy’s blade cut a hole in my chest and left my arms empty.”
“I could fill that hole. I could fill your arms and heal your scars.”

...but as you might have guessed it didn't last long.

"He was big. Verra big."

description

“Ye look terrified.” He wrapped his arms around her and leaned into her ear. “It will fit. I vow it.”
“’Tis not the size of your cock that concerns me.”
“Then what is it?”
“I fear I will disappoint ye,” she admitted.

description

.............

“I can smell your desire for me. ’Tis like a bouquet of burning flowers.”

description

.............

"He pumped two fingers in and out of her and snuck his pinkie into the forbidden ring of her rectum."

description
............

“Few women are capable of ejaculation. It pleases me verra much to know ye are one of the few.”

description
............

here we have a small soft amount of "bdsm"

...........

So he obviously chose Effie and goes to fetch a minister but when he comes back he can not marry her because Vanna is pregnant...

But Effie finds out the truth and weeeeeeee we have a HEA :)

...Ye've bewitched me body and soul

AYE! me too I'm bewitched by the book...Its like melted chocolate with a pinch of salt...which make it all the more sweet:)
the chocolate would be the love scenes and passion and the great chemistry between the H/h you just want them to be together forever and the salt would be the deep pang feeling I felt when something is totally wrong you gonna cry which make you hook up with the story...I wish this would have been a novel yet it still affects me in great way:)

I can't believe this short story can put a lot of emotions on me.AMAZING...

just a hint on the love scenes:

Take note: Don't forget to take some cold shower after reading this or if you're reading this by night well sweet dreams to you too:)

Um... Okay...

Not really sure what to say about this novella. It's not really all that well written and the "hot" factor is not particularly "hot" IMO, nor is the romance even all that believable. All in all, pretty darn forgettable!

Oh.My.Laird. This book was so hot, I needed an oven mitts just to hold it.

I loved Magnus the sexually advanced highland Laird. Well what not to love considering he was very wicked and very creative.

This was just a short story, but I felt that it was very sufficient. Don't wanna ruin it by being too much..

I usually don't care much for short stories but I LOVED this one. I clicked 5 stars but really it's 4 1/2 because at 65 pages it was just not long enough for me. This could have been an Amazing book, I wish Kimberly would have spent more time to make this a longer story. What I did get from this book was a fast HOT easy read that kept me very interested. I liked both of the H&h in this story and it had a HEA.

If you read this review Kimberly please write your fan's another regular sized romance. I have loved all your book's to date and want more from you than just shorts. You write them and I will buy.

Me gustó y mucho.

I need to read a full length historical romance book. Taming a highland devil made me realise that. This was set in 1480 (or somewhere mear that time). I disliked that the book started with a threesome (Magnus and two maids) and then Magnus had sex with Vanna, Effies sister. If I put aside that I have to say that the book was hot

OH yes!!! This will be a book I'll read again and again

The first chapter had me shocked! I wasn't expecting such a hot scene. I did not like this over sexed Hero :(. Then the sisters (one is his betrothed) come in and meet this "Devil". He finds out the brother was hiding one of the sisters and he kindof likes her....boobs that is. Then he demands to meet with each sister one by one.

There Is a scene in the book that angered me......however, I continued to give the book a chance, fighting the urge to throw my kindle at the wall!

Then, the story changes!! The hero goes from Devil to Angel in only a few pages and I end up falling head over heels in love with this dirty scoundrel.

The heroin is strong and wonderful. The hero is a dirty scoundrel that you will forgive. Especially when he whispers in her ear "you may now...." Uh. ...you know:0

My first book by Kimberly Killion and definitely not my last!

Heat Index: Will catch your panties on fire!!!

I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher, via Netgalley, this does not affect my opinion of this book or the content of my review.

It looks like this is a story that was previously published by Ellora's Cave and the rights have since reverted to the author and she is now self publishing it. I don't know, but maybe if I had known it was previously published there, it might have set my expectations a little better. Because, this was not what I was expecting.

Don't get me wrong. This wasn't a poorly written or executed book, and the erotica juxtaposed into a period where I as a reader tend to expect more purple prose than raunchy scenes was highly titillating. It was just a little startling is all, and I was expecting more romance and a little less erotica.

I actually really liked Effie and Magnus (his mother calls him Maggie, how cute is that?), I just really wished there was more story, and since this was almost all sex, there wasn't room in the 69 pages for enough story to satisfy me. The characters weren't just cut outs or stock characters, so we saw enough of them for me to be dissatisfied with the amount of story, conflict and characterization that we did get. They both have sad histories, and they both just fit each other really well, I just wanted more.

There were also two things that really bothered me, and there is just no way to get around explaining them without spoilers so stop now if you don't want spoilers.......................

I just couldn't get over the fact that Magnus literally tried each of the sisters out ahead of time. And I really couldn't get over who Effie's sister's real lover actually was. Those were two real problems for me. But again, if I had realized who the original publisher was, I might not have been so surprised or so bothered. So I admit, some of my rating is reader bias and expectations, but overall I am giving this 3 stars, because I am betting this is just the right book for someone else.

The Devil of Dunrobin, Highland Warrior and Laird has finally met his match!

To choose between two such stunning sisters as Vanna and Effie, to be his Lady Sutherland, should be simplicity itself. Yet if his Mother, and her brother have their way, it will be to the younger, lush, black-haired beauty, to whom Magnus has been betrothed to for the last six months, that he’ll wed. But when the elder red-haired, green-eyed sister catches his eye too, Magnus decides he will not be rushed, that he’ll take time to get to know them both before making his choice.

Too many around him have a secret agenda and seek to force their will upon the Laird. Battle scarred he may be but he hasn’t lived this long or come thus far without trusting his own instincts. Love will find a way. And so is when two wounded souls find like heart to like heart and nothing on earth seems capable of tearing them asunder. But a choice was already made and consequences are nothing if not ironic. With a twist that will leave you gasping at the frustration and futility of a fate that will not be thwarted, all appears lost.

From the fabulous characters that vividly spring to life upon the pages, merrily grab your hand and skip off to take you with them on their journey through time. To the telling, that will have you soar with the passions and their hope for new beginnings and bleed from the heart, for those left shattered and broken. Can there be a happy ending? And how can all that, possibly be expressed so well, in a mere 74 pages? A real gem of a story that will leave you on a high and no doubt wishing for a Highland Devil of your own to tame! Thanks Kimberley Killion! Brilliant!

I should start off by saying I love me some historical romance. I mean, really, I love this genre so much. I went through high school reading only historical romance novels so yeah. The overview made me want to read this so I was a bit disappointed when the book was more of a novella than a novel. For the shortness and lack of growth the book lost one and a half stars which leaves it with 3.5 stars.

I liked the characters and the way the story unfolded. A known rouge finally needs a wife and doesn't want the one that is being shoved at him but the one who doesn't want to marry again. Both the female and male lead work for one another which is part of the reason I did enjoy the read. They bring each other balance but the rate to which the "fall in love" was absolutely ridiculous, even by romance novel standards. I guess I just wanted more writing and the ability for the story to develop better which would require at least another twenty pages. Overall, it wasn't a bad read.

Read this book practically while I worked on my elliptical machine this morning. I had been wanting to read it for some time so I decided to buy it and overall, because it wasn't too bad, I don't regret that decision. Though I was disappointed in the length, 163 Nook book pages, and the price, almost $6 bucks for such a short read! I liked Effie and I really liked Magnus (Maggie as his mother called him!), but how could I not like a Scottish man-whore who excelled in the bedroom!! The book was rather whirlwind, but based on the length I understand. This was about two characters who fell for one another hard and quickly, who'd both suffered some heartache, and were seeking more than passing pleasure, but love and true companionship. I would suggest this book for a quickie....

Magnus doesn't like when his orders are not met, he becomes like a woman and takes offense, “leave us,” he cut Sylvie off sharply, and Effie might have thought him a tyrant for being harsh had he not wrapped his own fur around Sylvie’s shoulders before sending her out into the cold. He closed the door and turned his scowl on Effie . “I sent for ye two days past, and ye did not come. I sent for ye again yestereve, and ye ignored my request again. I would know why?” This was a quick read I liked it I wasn't in love with it I had a problem with Magnus in the beginning, I can't say why as it will spoil the book, but after I got over it I enjoyed reading it.

Okay, just so we are clear, there was no "taming" of Highland Devil. He is just your usual male who, because of his status, wealth, character and looks, gets more action than your average guy. And due to that fact it is surprising he hasn't fathered any children so far.

And he is not a "Devil" at all. He is kind and considerate. He cares for his land and his people. But he is led by his dick - that is true. He just can't keep it under the kilt.
Now, the book is short, so maybe the author didn't have time to "tame" him properly. I am still not sure what taming techniques the author was planning to use on Laird Magnus "Maggie" Sutherland, but I sure wasn't expecting two hungry vaginas. I understand that sometime it is possible to tame fire with fire [i.e. in bed]. And maybe such is the case here. Only it wasn't all that obvious. It is just my brain trying to figure out this whole clusterfuck.

I am not 100% sure what was the protocol of manners for Ladies in 15th century Scotland, but I somehow doubt that it included jumping into bed with men they've just met. The story takes place during winter and maybe having sex is the only way to keep warm, but I still doubt that was a way of things back then.
With all the steamy sex that is taking place in every corner of the house, I am surprised only Magnus locks his door. It is surprisingly easy to walk in on

...Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes. No one locks the doors. And women of the household are spying on their female guests. That said, I am again baffled that no one notice or report highly inappropriate behavior of the younger sister (who is a prime choice for a wife to Laird Magnus).
No one tells Magnus anything of any importance. Yet, everyone is trying to use him.
Everyone is acting strange and illogical. Take Magnus for example. After first hot night with Effie he is leaving without saying a word to ANYONE and is missing for two weeks. Instead of asking one of his men to fetch a priest for the wedding ceremony, he is himself going after him. If he wanted to do it himself - fine. But why not take few men with you? It is dangerous out there. And no man is suppose to wonder winter highlands alone. And another thing - why is there no priest in the household in the first place? It was a custom back then.

Magnus's mother is an "evil queen" cliche. And for no good reason. Her presence in the book is not all that needed. Instead of creating a complicated character with perhaps conflicting feelings regarding the whole situation with Effie and Magnus, she [mother] is just stupid, dry bitch.
Effie's younger sister is also a cliche. It seems the poor girl doesn't have any positive qualities. She is described as a 19 y.o. girl of stunning beauty, but the rest of her is cunning, slutty, jealous, greedy and etc. Just like Magnus's mom she could have been so much more. Not just means to outline Effie's good qualities. After all, if someone is good, you don't need to put them among dirt to make them shine brighter. But that is exactly what is happening here.

To wrap this whole thing up, I would like to mention one more thing. In my opinion, the author ignored any historical accuracy and yet she added "Scottish" words into dialogues. It makes the reading difficult. Everything is in English with just some of the words written in a way that should make characters sound more Scottish. It's like adding green salad to burger in order to make it look more healthy.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review,

Magnus Sutherland loves women and to prove it the book starts out with him and two redheaded maids.

He is also betrothed to Vanna from a neighboring clan. He is reminded constantly by his mother of his responsibility to produce an heir. Vanna has arrived 2 months early, with her brother Ian and sister Effie in tow.

Ian wants this marriage so that he will have help going after the Ross Clan, whom he feels is responsible for his fathers death. Magnus has lost his father and 2 brothers from war and doesn't want war.

After Vanna's mother left, Effie continued to raise and educate Vanna. She is beautiful but cold and definitely no virgin.

Effie is a widow and has lost her 3 children through war or illness. She wants a life again but doesn't feel like she can handle the heartbreak, especially from an unfaithful husband.

Magnus finds out there are 2 sisters and has decided he wants to get to know them better before he chooses. Ian objects but Magnus reminds him that the agreement was to marry his sister, not which one.

He finds out fast that Vanna has very loose morals, really she has none at all. The next day he summons Effie but she avoids him for 2 days until he tracks her down. After talking with her, he realizes that not only is he attracted to her but he actually likes her. She is smart and would make a good wife for him.

She is honest and admits she is very attracted to him but doesn't want her heart broken again. He asks her and she tells him about her husband and then losing her children. He decides he wants to marry her. His mother is totally against it, telling him that she may be too old to have more children (she is 32), while Vanna is only 19. He doesn't care and rides to bring the Priest back to marry them. He doesn't tell anyone where he went and is gone 2 weeks but does come back with the Priest. He tells Effie he will announce their marriage and right before he does it, Ian announces that Vanna is with child. Effie is devastated.

Who will Magnus marry and will he finally be happy?

This is a Novella, 8 chapters long. I feel like this would of been a much better book if it were longer. Magnus went from a man with very loose morals to wanting to settle down the next day. I don't think we got to really know Magnus. His mother needed to be sent off to a Convent. She was a bitter, nasty woman who always made Magnus aware she felt him responsible for his brothers deaths. I don't even think she cared for her only son.

I have read books by this author before and enjoyed them. While I did like the book, it could have been better.
