Newark Civil War siege-works

During the English Civil War (1642-1651), Newark’s strategic location at the crossing of the Great North Road, Fosse Way and River Trent earned it the title “Key to the North”. A Royalist garrison arrived in late 1642 and successfully repulsed three major sieges by Parliamentarian forces between 1642 and 1646, remaining in Royalist hands until 1651. An extensive network of defensive earthworks in and around the town survive in recognisable condition as the finest collection of Civil War siege-works in the country.
