The Bartons Arms

The Bartons Arms was built in 1901 for Mitchell and Butlers, a major Birmingham brewery, on the site of a former pub. It was designed by the firm of James & Lister Lea in a neo-Jacobean style. Many of the original features have survived including mahogany woodwork, engraved and stained mirrors and windows, snobs-screens and Minton-Hollins tiles making this an architectural gem among pubs; it is now grade II listed and is included on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. Its location adjacent to the (now-demolished) Aston Hippodrome meant that it was regularly visited by variety stars of the day including, notably, Laurel and Hardy. The pub was acquired in 2002 by the Oaka Group who refurbished it and re-opened it in 2003 after three years of closure; the owners also brew the well-regarded Oakham Ales (in Peterborough) and naturally their products are available in the Bartons Arms
