Caynham Camp

A univallate hill fort, with one huge rampart. It is quite unlike the more complex nearby hill forts such as Croft Ambrey, Wapley and Bury Ditches by being in a less defendable site and with just the one wall and simple gates at the eastern and western end. Such forts were possibly more a statement rather than purely defensive and are relatively young, c. 400BC - 100AD.

Local tradition has it that it was also occupied by the Romans and used as a Parliament HQ during the Civil War siege of Ludlow Castle.

The eastern gate is very impressive with big ramparts and is said to be in good condition with little sign of later modification or erosion.
