The station comprises two platforms. One is on the western side, with the line running in the northern direction via Winchester, Basingstoke, Woking and Clapham Junction, towards the terminal of London Waterloo (also to Reading, Birmingham New Street and the North West). The other is on the eastern side, with the line running in the southern direction, towards Southampton, Bournemouth, and Weymouth.
The station is very well connected with the rest of the United Kingdom's transport network: it is situated directly next to Southampton Airport and the M3 and M27 motorways, and almost all passenger services stop here.
The station opened in 1986.

This railway line runs from London Waterloo to Weymouth. The route passes through Woking, Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth, Wareham and Dorchester. The line opened in 1838.
