Pevsner, visiting in its centenary year 1969, noted that it was "big but towerless, with ... a porch flanked by two big flying buttresses".
The church was gutted by a blaze which began in the late evening of 12 February 2017. It was believed that the church was broken into before it was set alight,. Gas leaking from melted pipes then ignited, causing further damage. The tops of the gable ends of the building were dismantled on 14 February to stabilise the remains.
