TA0223 : The western path across The Humber Bridge
taken 5 months ago, near to Humber Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire, England
The A15 is the main north-south road in Lincolnshire, running the entire length of the county for almost 100 miles between Hessle, near Kingston upon Hull, and Peterborough via Lincoln, Sleaford and Bourne. It is also the road that crosses the Humber Bridge.
The Humber bridge is a 2220m single span suspension bridge which carries the A15 over the Humber estuary. When it opened on 24 June 1981 it was the longest single span suspension bridge in the world. It held this title until 1998 when the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge opened in Japan.
Construction started in July 1972 and when finished in 1981 the total cost was £91 million. The central span is 1440m; the southern (Barton) approach is 530m; and the northern (Hessle) approach is 280m. The towers are 155.5m tall and are 36mm further apart at the top than the bottom to allow for the curvature of the Earth.
In 2017 it was grade I listed building.
