taken 8 months ago, near to Askam in Furness, Cumbria, England

Old railway bridge, Askam Pier
Old railway bridge, Askam Pier
This bridge was constructed to allow access along the foreshore which is a public right of way. It supported a single track mineral railway that carried molten slag in railway wagons from Askam Iron Works; the slag was tipped on the slag bank that extended into the Duddon Estuary to the left. The slag bank became known as Askam Pier and houses have been built on the site of the iron works which closed in 1919.
