It's a Sunday and the Lift will have been closed. 5 boats of the Anderton Canal Carrying Co's fleet are having to wait overnight before they can return to their base at Preston Brook.
They will have been delivering cargo to a ship berthed in Weston Point or Runcorn Docks. By mooring alongside and using the ship's crew and derricks to transfer the cargo it was apparently cheaper than by delivering to the Docks by road and paying wharfage charges.
The boats are (l - r): Shad Link
, Argo (butty) Link , Effingham Link , Keppel (butty) Link , Mountbatten Link. The crew of Argo have washing out to dry!

River Weaver Navigation
The River Weaver stretches over 50 miles from its source in the Peckforton Hills to its confluence with the Manchester Ship Canal. The 20 miles downstream of Winsford were made navigable in the 1720s for the salt trade, and further improved in the 1870s. The navigation includes the Anderton Boat Lift linking with the Trent and Mersey Canal.
