Early engine beam, Maidstone
This is not a full beam engine but an important part. This is the beam from a Boulton & Watt engine of 1806 and is outside the former Springfield Paper Mill in Maidstone, Kent. It is listed Grade II.
The mill is claimed to be the first to be entirely steam powered and construction started in 1805. Some sources claim the beam is 1805 but more reliable sources give it as 1806.
It is a very early cast iron beam but the one at Garlogie is thought to be a reused Boulton and watt beam of 1805. The Garlogie beam is more primitive with no rim and a more prominent cruciform section. Both do have spigoted ends. Garlogie does not have the round bosses for the smaller gudgeon pins either.
The mill is now closed and the beam is freely accessible in a new housing development in front of an original mill building.
