SE1122 : Calder and Hebble Navigation heading East towards Cromwell Bottom
taken 1 year ago, near to Southowram, Calderdale, England
The Calder and Hebble Navigation starts in Wakefield, at a junction with the Aire and Calder Navigation and runs upstream to Sowerby Bridge, at a junction with the Rochdale Canal. It passes through Mirfield, Horbury, Dewsbury, Brighouse, and Elland and has a junction with the Huddersfield Broad Canal along its route. The former branch to Halifax is no longer navigable, except for a stub now known as the Halifax Arm.
Construction began in 1759 and the initial scheme, which included 9.2km of new cuts, was completed in 1770. It has remained navigable since it was opened. Many improvements have been made since it was opened (which included the now defunct Salterhebble branch to Halifax, opened in 1828).
