The Australia
The first known written reference to "Austrilia House" [sic] as it was then known is in 1857. A local folktale has it that the pub name goes back to the days when slate carrying merchant ships used to sail from Porthmadog to ports around the world. One particular vessel sailed to Australia for the first time. The sailors never returned to the ship and so had to be replaced by an Australian crew. On return to Porthmadog, the pub was frequented by the Australian sailors and thereafter by any visiting ships with Australian crews, for which it became known as "The Australia". This is refuted as Porthmadog ships didn't carry slates to Australia.
The pub was re-named Y Gestiana, after the name of the last ship built in Porthmadog and launched in 1913
SH5638 : Y Gestiana, for a time, but reverted to its previous name in 2015 when it was taken over by a group of local breweries In 2017 it was taken over and refurbished by Purple Moose Brewery
