The Balmoral Estate, on the bank of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, lies within the Cairngorms National Park. The estate has been owned by the Royal Family since it was bought by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria in 1852. The centrepiece of the estate is Balmoral Castle, built between 1853 and 1856. It was at Balmoral Castle that Queen Eizabeth II, Britain's longest reigning monarch, died in September 2022.
The grounds of Balmoral Estate are usually open to the public from April until July.

The Cairngorms National Park, in the Highlands of Scotland, is the largest of the UK's National Parks. Covering an area of more than 4,500 square kilometres, it comprises a variety of landforms, from mountain peaks to low-lying valleys.

Royal Deeside is a name often given to the area around the River Dee in Scotland, particularly around Braemar, Ballater and downstream as far as Banchory. Balmoral Castle, owned by the Royal Family, is located in this area.
