SE6748 : Control tower and mess huts
taken 2 years ago, near to Elvington, York, England
The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial is on the site of the World War II station, RAF Elvington, near York.
Originally a grass airfield, RAF Elvington was rebuilt with three hardened runways in 1942 and became base for 77 Squadron. In early 1944, 77 Squadron moved to the newly opened airfield at Full Sutton and Elvington became host to two French Squadrons operating within No.4 Group: No. 346 (Guyenne) and No.347 (Tunisie). It was the only base used by French Heavy Bomber Squadrons during the war.
The site was first opened to the public as a museum and memorial, in 1986.
