Only 2 feet of the abutment are now showing (right). The road was about seven feet lower when the bridge was in place giving a clearance of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 metres). It was often struck by vehicles too high to pass under.
In 1940, a 24 year old soldier was killed when he failed to duck as the lorry he was travelling in passed under the bridge.
In 1944 a similar accident when a soldier who was hitch-hiking, was given a lift in a truck, by sitting on a spare tyre and facing backwards was fatally injured.
Following this second fatal incident the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic.
In June 1965, after the closure of the railway the bridge was finally removed.
The bridge had brick abutments with wrought iron girders, brick wing walls and parapets.
Waveney Valley Railway

Beccles is a station on the Ipswich to Lowestoft line and had a branch line to Great Yarmouth which opened in 1859 and another to Norwich both via the Haddiscoe Junction.
At the Tivetshall end was the junction between the Waveney Valley Railway and the Eastern Union Railway, enabling passengers and freight to travel all over the country.
