Network Rail is building sea defences and extended platforms. The seaward platform is vulnerable, being cantilevered out over the beach with little to break the force of the waves below.

Thompson's Path

A public footpath, with several sets of steps, that leads steeply upwards from Beach Street outside Dawlish railway station to meet Exeter Road (the A379) at the top end near the bottom of East Cliff Road. The direct distance from one end to the other is barely 300m, but it may be nearer 500m in total length including several bends. Halfway up there is a viewing point overlooking the station and the sea.
