NM8529 : Oban - McCaig's Warehouse and The Corryvreckan
taken 3 years ago, near to Oban, Argyll And Bute, Scotland
Oban is an important town on the west coast of Scotland. Although its population is only a little over 8,000 this number can be tripled in the peak tourist season. The town possesses two cathedrals (neither of which makes it a city however); on the waterfront towards the north end of the town is the Cathedral Church of St Columba. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Argyll and the Isles and mother church of the diocese. The second cathedral, not far from it, but slightly inland on George Street is the Cathedral Church of St John the Divine, a cathedral of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
But Oban's biggest claim to fame is its harbour and the associated ferries. Many of CalMac's fleet are berthed here and sail to the following island ports (island in brackets):
Castlebay (Barra)
Arinagour (Coll)
Scalasaig (Colonsay)
Craignure (Mull)
Achnacroish (Lismore)
Lochboisdale (South Uist)
Port Askaig (Islay)
Scarinish (Tiree)
and also to the following locations on the mainland:
Kennacraig (Kintyre)
Mallaig (North Morar)
