Melrose Abbey

Melrose Abbey is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland (Historic Scotland). It was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks. After rebuilding in 1385 following a raid by Richard II of England, it was largely destroyed again by the English in 1544. Some monks remained to 1590. Impressive walls and one rear widow remain. Parts of the abbey were used as a local church until 1810.
