Heavily exploited common land on Cockfield Fell
Heavily exploited common land on Cockfield Fell
Presumably Cockfield Fell escaped enclosure and remained common land because the local populace had such a major interest in retaining control, with many households having their own bell pit excavations for coal. The very rough and disturbed surface of the fell stands testimony to the sheer number of such shallow mines, and there are also quarries and much other industrial arachaelogy to be found. The whole area, as well as being CROW Access Land, is a scheduled ancient monument, so digging by all and sundry is now forbidden!
