Mayflower & Speedwell plaques, Bayards' Cove, Dartmouth
There are actually three different plaques here: one on the vertical face of the wall, one on a sloping surface on top of the wall, and a smaller one between them. They commemorate the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers from Dartmouth in 1620. They left in two ships, of which only the Mayflower made it to America and achieved a place in the history books; the other ship, the Speedwell, had to put back to Plymouth as she was unseaworthy. The date 1957 in a mosaic of stones on the floor is presumably that of the memorial. The sailing is also commemorated in Rotherhithe, Surrey, whence the yoyage commenced
