Germander Speedwell - detail
Veronica chamaedrys is one of many Speedwell species, but readily identifiable by the two opposite lines of hairs on the stems - see the two arrows [the rows of hairs at are at 90 degrees to each other on succeeding bits of stem]. Flowers are blue or pinkish, with 4 petals, 2 stamens and a single stigma. I always wondered about the origin 'germander' part of the name and was surprised to find that it is a noun, simply meaning 'a widely distributed plant of the mint family', which is not helpful.
