Blackburn Edge
Blackburn Edge is no more than a slight break of slope on the northern flanks of Great Shunner Fell, not a gritstone outcrop as the name might suggest. Away from the main Pennine Way route traversing the fell, this part of the moor is frequented only by gamekeepers and those intent on visiting random OS grid squares. There are faint tracks from landrovers delivering clients to grouse butts, but no defined footpaths here. The view extends over the highest reaches of Swaledale, here called Birk Dale after the major tributary to the Swale. In the far distance lies Nine Standards Rigg.
