SE2737 : Tennis courts in The Hollies
taken 4 years ago, near to Headingley, Leeds, England
The Hollies is an area of approximately 93 acres (38 ha) comprising gardens, sports facilities and woodland on the western side of the Meanwood Valley in north Leeds. The estate was given to the city in 1921 by its former owner William Brown in memory of his son Major Harold Brown, who was born here in 1879 and killed in World War I. The main house became a sanatorium but is now in private residential use again.
The gardens at the southern end of the site include the National Plant Collections of Philadelphus and Deutzia, the northern and eastern parts stretching out to the Ring Road consist of wooded hillside with several paths, and in between are tennis courts. One local website claims that "J. R. R. Tolkien spent time here and it may have inspired his vision of Middle Earth." The park is still owned by the city council but now maintained by a voluntary Friends group.
