Saltburn Gill
Saltburn Gill flows through a 52 acre Nature Reserve preserving woodland little changed by agriculture, with a mix of oak, ash, hazel and holly, spoiled only by an amount of the invasive alien sycamore. From 1999, the Gill suffered from heavy pollution from old ironstone workings, causing it to become bright orange, but a solution by pumping away water form the discharge point seems to be restoring the Gill to its former nature. It's a tranquil spot with few visitors in October, in contrast with the beach busy with tourists and surfers less than a mile further on.
