Cattersty Sands
Below Skinningrove the wave-cut platforms of Huntcliff Foot and Hummersea Scar give way to a sandy beach in a shallow bay formed around the outlet of Kilton Beck. This affords the only descent to the shore for the Cleveland Way between Saltburn and Staithes and a fine place to start (or end) a sea kayak expedition along the North Sea Coast, since it is quiet and avoids the crowds of seaside resorts and tourist attractions. Below the sands lie rocks of the Redcar Mudstone Formation, but above is the Cleveland Ironstone Formation, upon which is based the Iron industry, nowadays represented by Skinningrove Steelworks and the Iron Mining Museum and making the town behind the jetty a strange cross between steel town and fishing village.
