Annaside Head
Annaside Beck drains an area northeast of Water Crag with its catchment about a kilometre across at this point on Annaside Edge. The slightly steeper slopes just below this point lead to perhaps marginally drier moor, which carries the public bridleway from Punchard Coal Level to the Tan Hill Inn, passing other small coal workings on its way. The Tan Hill coal seam served by this path is relatively productive for a coal in the Millstone grit series, and is up to 75cm thick. The bridleway would not have been used for transport of the coal but for travel by miners. The last workings closed before the second world war and the tracks that remain are now maintained by grouse shooting interests. The bridleway doesn't server any grouse butts but shows evidence of use by gamekeepers and has recently serviced work to block moorland grips.
