Scrambling in Scale Gill
R.Brian Evans' "More Scrambles in the Lake District" guidebook gives Scale Gill grade 1 or 2 (the latter only if skulkers' routes are avoided and direct lines taken) so we thought this a suitable trip for our kids and our nephews (who hadn't done any rock climbing to speak of). This is the start of possibly the steepest and slipperiest bit of the day and did lead to a bit of whinge from the most junior team member (age 7), but mostly about the wetness rather than the difficulty. The hillside faces SSE, so gets the sun early in the day, the route is not too long and much of it is open and easy, so does indeed make a good introductory trip. If you did choose to use a rope, there are plenty of trees, so a sling and karabiner would be all that you needed for belays - no need to carry a rack.
