Fertile shoots of the Stag's-horn or Common Clubmoss [Lycopodium clavatum] growing through heather moorland vegetation on the south bank of the Faseny Water NT6361 : Clubmoss in the Lammermuir Hills. They produce spores in long narrow cones at the tip of 1-3 fertile branches. Club mosses are very early plants, having been around since the Carboniferous era [300-360 million years ago], and giant specimens contributed to the Coal Measures.
