Inside Tilbury Fort
The building of Tilbury Fort started in 1670 during the reign of King Charles II. It was built on the site of an earlier fort, constructed by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540. The fortifications were in a star-shape with a double moat and this gave superior fire in defence and maximum difficulty for an enemy to penetrate into the interior of the fortress, seen here. The use of water gave defence in depth, ensuring that the enemy were kept at an appropriate distance.
The buildings on the right are the former Officers' Quarters. These date from 1752-3 when they were rebuilt. In the 19th century, the front of the terrace was separated from the parade ground by small private gardens with iron railings, underlining the officers' status.
