Old Celtic:Din Talgwn ~ steep-fronted fort.
Viewed from Seacliff Harbour, near Auldhame. Built in late 15th Century, a stronghold for the Douglases. Destroyed in 1641 during a 12-day bombardment by General Monck's Cromwellian Forces. Featured in Sir Walter Scott's Marmion.
Birthplace of the poet Gavin Douglas (C.1475-1522); translator of Virgil's Aeneid into Scots.
