Grassed over and gone
Grassed over and gone
This piece of landscape appears unremarkable enough but it was the scene of two big industrial transport locations. In the very early nineteenth century the Somerset Coal Canal was dug through here to provide a link with the many pits in the area. Close by were a pumping station and a tunnel. But the railways came along in the early 1900s and they bought out the canal; using much of the route and taking advantage of the work already done, the trains formed more links with the mines. However, by 1958 the pits were no longer using the old routes and so the line was closed.

Now that the earth has been replaced over the old lines it seems difficult to imagine that they were ever here.
