The Hanover Building, standing on Corporation Street between Hanover Street and Balloon Street, forms part of the Co-operative Estate in Manchester which includes the CIS Tower and One Angel Square. Built for the Co-operative Wholesale Society between 1905 and 1909, it is a Grade II Listed Building ( (Historic England List Entry Number: 1025287 LinkExternal link ).

The building was the head office for the CWS, which began trading in Manchester in 1863 (a continuation of the Rochdale Pioneers Society of 1844). The façade has pilasters and Corinthian order columns and the roof is concealed by parapet walls. When it was first built, it had domes on some of the corners and there was another floor which housed the Mitchell Memorial Hall (see postcard image at LinkExternal link Manchester History Net). This upper storey was destroyed in the Manchester Blitz of 1940-41 and never rebuilt. The building was later extended to fill the block, as were several of the later Co-operative buildings.
